Implications for School Boards and <strong>Schools</strong>Section Three:Implications for School Boards and <strong>Schools</strong>Boards of school trustees, school district officials and otherschool leaders have a unique responsibility and challeng<strong>in</strong>gduty to address <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g diversity <strong>in</strong> both the educational andoperational aspects of school<strong>in</strong>g.Education leaders must cont<strong>in</strong>ually strive to create and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>learn<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g environments that are responsive to thediverse communities they serve. In order to carry out thisresponsibility, it is important that education leaders exam<strong>in</strong>e schoolboard and school policies, strategies and <strong>in</strong>itiatives to determ<strong>in</strong>ehow comprehensively the diverse needs of students and employeesare be<strong>in</strong>g addressed. Areas that require improvement can then beidentified and plans made for both system and school-specificchange.Guid<strong>in</strong>g Questions<strong>Diversity</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>BC</strong> <strong>Schools</strong>: A <strong>Framework</strong> has been developed to assisteducation leaders <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g the implications of exist<strong>in</strong>glegislation and prov<strong>in</strong>cial policy related to diversity. The follow<strong>in</strong>gquestions are <strong>in</strong>tended to facilitate discussion and prompt actionsthat will lead to cont<strong>in</strong>ually improv<strong>in</strong>g policies, procedures andpractices to support diversity.Policies and ProceduresPolices and procedures establish clear expectations for all membersof the school community by encourag<strong>in</strong>g appropriate action andprovid<strong>in</strong>g a basis for sanctions <strong>in</strong> response to <strong>in</strong>appropriate action.They encourage pro-active and preventive endeavour as well asremedial and restorative approaches. To be effective, policiesand procedures must be regularly reviewed, communicatedand implemented.• Does the school board/school have a specific policy thataddresses diversity and re<strong>in</strong>forces human rights for all studentsand employees?• How do other current district policies promote respect fordiversity and human rights consistent with the legislation? Arethey regularly communicated to the entire school community?<strong>BC</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education 23
