AY 310. Archaeology of <strong>Missouri</strong> – 3 hours. This courseexamines through archaeological evidence the development ofprehistoric Native American cultures in <strong>Missouri</strong> from the last IceAge to European contact. Prerequisites: AY 101 or AY 102 andJunior Standing. . Fall even years.AY 311. Archaeology of the Bible Lands / Archaeology of theAncient Near East – 3 hours. The course will focus on theapplication of archaeology in the lands and time periods recordedin the Bible. Basic overview of the material cultures that are thesetting for the Biblical narratives. This course will count as aReligion/Physiology <strong>major</strong> or minor requirement.AY 312. Ancient Technology – 3 hours. Ancient Technologystudies the innovations and advances in technology throughouthuman history. Beginning with the simplest tools and fire upthrough the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Some hands-onexamples and training will be included. Students will have theopportunity to replicate a form of ancient technology as part of thecourse requirement.AY 315. Technical Writing for the Sciences – 3 hours. Anintensive writing course designed to instruct students in writing forthe sciences. The course is primarily aimed at those students inthe physical sciences who plan to continue further on in higher<strong>education</strong> and who are interested in improving their writing skills.The course focus will be on styles and forms of writing associatedwith the sciences. The course will provide instruction in findingguidelines for writing papers according to specific fields andjournals, and practice in effective writing strategies following saidguidelines. Emphasis will be placed upon information gatheringand the writing of correct, clear, and properly formatteddocuments including, but not limited to the following: proposals,abstracts, oral and written reports in the sciences.AY 320. Historical Archaeology – 3 hours. This course willdiscuss the history, methods, and theories of historicalarchaeology, which studies human history after the appearance ofwritten documents. Case studies will come primarily from NorthAmerican examples, including Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg,Monticello, Civil War battlefields, shipwrecks, and local researchin Arrow Rock, <strong>Missouri</strong>. Prerequisite: AY 101, AY 104, orPermission of Instructor. Fall even years.AY 340. Native American Cultures – 3 hours. This courseexamines the historical origins and cultural traditions of NativeAmericans in North America. Topics to be discussed include: art,religion, mythology, foodways, dress, architecture, oral traditions,and culture contact with European cultures. Prerequisite: AY102, SC 100, or Permission of Instructor. Fall odd years.AY 349. Special Topics in Anthropology – 3 hours.Discussion and interpretation of special topics in the field ofanthropology. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor.AY 376/476. Independent Study in Anthropology – 1-3 hours.Individual study and research in anthropology. Prerequisite:Permission of Instructor, Division Dean, and Chief AcademicOfficer. . Arranged.AY 401. Internship in Archaeology – 1-6 hours. Archaeologyinternships are arranged with professional archaeologists in publicand private institutions, businesses, or government agencies andprovide students with hands-on training in archaeological field andlaboratory research, curation, <strong>education</strong>al programming, grantwriting, and public outreach. Internship placement is determinedby the student's interests and available institutions. Prerequisites:Junior Standing, AY 301, and Permission of Instructor, DivisionDean, and Chief Academic Officer. Arranged.AY 403. Archaeological Field Methods – 3 or 6 hours.Students participate in an archaeological field project off campus,which provides hands-on training in archaeological surveying andexcavation techniques. Excavations will normally focus onprehistoric or historical period sites in <strong>Missouri</strong>. $50 lab fee.Prerequisites: AY 101 or Permission of Instructor. Summer.AY 404. Archaeological Laboratory Methods – 3 hours. Thisis an advanced laboratory class that will provide hands-on trainingin lab methods, artifact analysis, and curation. Students arerequired to conduct an independent research project. $25 lab fee.Prerequisites: AY 101 or Permission of Instructor. Summer.AY 405. Paleoethonobotany – 3 hours. Application ofethnobotanical approaches in archaeology; techniques to recoverand interpret floral remains (macroremains and microremains);research questions in ethnobotany; integration of ethonobotanicaland archaeological data. Critique of original works in the fieldemphasized. Prerequisites: Junior/Senior standing, BI 210, AY250.AY 406. History of Anthropological Thought – 3 hours. Thiscourse covers the history of anthropological thought as adiscipline. Major theorists and approaches over the last centurywill be discussed including the works of Franz Boas, MargaretMeade, Claude Levi-Strauss, and Max Weber, and the paradigmsof functionalism, structuralism, Marxism, and feminism. Requiredfor all Anthropolgoy <strong>major</strong>s. Prerequisites: AY 101, AY 102,Junior or Senior standing.
