(Total 48 hours.)Minor requirements: 18 hours of Criminal Justice courses,including no less than 9 credit hours of upper divisioncredits, taken in consultation with Criminal Justice faculty.Major assessment: All seniors must complete a researchpaper in conjunction with CJ 485 (Senior Seminar), an inhouseassessment exam, and a standardized assessmentexam from Educational Testing Services.CJ 100. Introduction to Criminal Justice - 3 hours. Anoverview of the historical development and current status ofAmerican criminal justice. Attention is given to the variouscomponent parts of the system and their interactions. Fall.Spring.CJ 105, 106, 107 Peace Officer Training – 6 hours each.This course is designed to meet the 640 Hour Basic LawEnforcement Training (Class A Certificate) requirementsapproved by P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Trainingcommission), Office of the State Department of Public Safety.Topics include administrative procedures, legal studies,interpersonal perspectives, technical studies, physical fitness andskill development. On cycle.CJ 115. Criminal Law and the Constitution - 3 hours. Anexamination of the purposes and sources of criminal law.Elements of crimes against the person and crimes againstproperty are addressed. A consideration of defenses to criminalliability is also undertaken. Prerequisite: CJ 100. Spring.CJ 205. Juvenile Justice - 3 hours. An analysis of the socialadministration of juvenile justice in the U.S. The decision-makingprocess of police, the court, and probation officials in theapprehension and processing of juveniles will be stressed.Prerequisite: CJ 100. Fall.CJ 210. Probation and Parole - 3 hours. A study of the history,structure, organization and operation of probation and paroleservices. The roles of probation and parole officers will becovered as well as varying state requirements and administrativeguidelines. Prerequisite: CJ 100. Fall.CJ 220. Penology - 3 hours. A study of the history andevaluation of the correctional process with emphasis on theAmerican prison system. Included will be American jails andcommunity-based corrections. Prerequisite: CJ 100. Spring.CJ 230. Private Security – 3 hours. A study of the privatesecurity systems of the U.S. in regard to philosophies of behaviormanagement and property security. Handling of offenders andvictims within the criminal justice system, and future conjectureconcerning protection of property and persons is detailed. Oncycle.CJ 240. Forensic Science – 3 hours. An examination oftechniques of the application of science to criminal law.Techniques covered via lecture and lab work includes, but is notlimited to : physical properties, organic analysis, inorganicanalysis, toxicology, serology, drugs, fingerprints, DNA, firearms,and document analysis. Prerequisite: CJ 100. Fall.CJ 280. Criminal Evidence – 3 hours. Overview of legalrequirements for the collection, preservation, and presentation ofevidence in criminal matters. Topics include the admission andexclusion of evidence, relevance, the hearsay rule and itsexceptions, the use of writings and demonstrative evidence,judicial notice, order of proof and presumptions, and issuesrelating to witness competency and privileges. Prerequisite: CJ100. Spring.CJ 285. Patrol Procedures and Accident Investigation – 3hours. This course is designed to teach responsibilities,techniques, and methods of police patrol and accidentinvestigation. Identification of police hazards, beat patrol andobservation techniques of responding to crime and emergencies,crime prevention and community policy concepts will also beintroduced. Procedures for proper crash investigation will bepresented. Prerequisite: CJ 100. On cycle.CJ 300. Criminal Investigation - 3 hours. An overview of thecriminal investigation process as a systematic method of inquirythat utilizes science and human resourcefulness. The course willfocus on criminalistics and behavioral science and the relationshipbetween them. Prerequisite: CJ 100. Fall.CJ 305. Minorities and Criminal Justice – 3 hours. Anexamination of the roles of minorities as offenders, victims, andemployees in the criminal justice system. An assessment ofstatistics, research, and the literature as it relates to minoritycrime. Prerequisite: CJ 100 or SC 100. Fall.CJ 307. Women and Criminal Justice – 3 hours. A survey ofthe roles of women as offenders, victims, and employees in thecriminal justice system. An evaluation of current patterns andpractices of law enforcement, criminal courts, and correctionsrelative to women as offenders, victims, and employees.Prerequisite: CJ 100 or SC 100. Spring.CJ 320. Drugs and the Law - 3 hours. An in-depth study ofdrugs with particular attention to drug laws, detection methodsand techniques, recognition of drugs and offenders, and thevarious investigation methods employed by law enforcementagencies. Prerequisite: CJ 100 or permission of instructor. Fallodd years.CJ 330. Criminology - 3 hours. Study of the nature, causesand control of crime, social factors contributing to growth of crime.Focus is the study of the various theories as to criminality. Thiscourse will satisfy a Sociology <strong>major</strong> elective. Prerequisite: CJ100 or SC 100. Spring.CJ 340. Community Oriented Policing - 3 hours. An in-depthstudy of community oriented policing, including the history,various types, how to get started, and how they are evaluated.Prerequisite: CJ 100. Spring odd years.CJ 149/249/349/449. Special Topics - 1-3 hours. Selectedtopics as scheduled by the division faculty. Prerequisite: CJ 100.CJ 350. Homicide Investigation - 3 hours. An in-depth study ofhomicide investigation, including tactics, procedures, problems,forensic techniques, and legal issues. Prerequisite: CJ 100. Falleven years.29
