Majors must also take the ETS (Educational TestingService) English examination and are responsible forscheduling, taking, and paying for the exam. EnglishSecondary Education Certification candidates should refer tothe Teacher Education Handbook for other <strong>major</strong>assessment requirements.EN 130. Rhetoric and Composition - 3 hours. An introductionto the basic organizational forms of the essay. EN 130 teachesstudents to write in different persuasive settings, including avariety of rhetorical modes. Students are introduced to collegewriting utilizing the process method of drafting and revisingessays that are collected in a portfolio. EN 130 students also dointensive research writing according to MLA standards. Fall.Spring.EN 160. Literature and Composition - 3 hours. A continuedemphasis upon the principles of expository writing and researchestablished in EN 130. Students will utilize the process method todraft and revise well-developed essays that are collected in aportfolio. Students will develop skills for synthesizing primary andsecondary texts in research papers written according to MLAstandards. In doing so, students will examine the basic elementsof the genres of short story, poetry, and drama. Selected worksare used as the basis for discussions, lectures, and studentwriting. Prerequisite: EN 130ALL COURSES 200 0R ABOVE REQUIRE EN 160 AS APREREQUISITE. Two literature survey courses are not to betaken in the same semester.EN 200. World Literature I - 3 hours. An investigation of theliterature of diverse cultures from antiquity to the Renaissance.Fall. Spring.EN 201. World Literature II - 3 hours. An investigation of theliterature of diverse cultures from the Renaissance to the presentday. Fall. Spring.EN 220. American Literature I - 3 hours. Principal writers andmovements in the literature of North America from the colonialperiod through the Civil War. Fall even years.EN 225. American Literature II - 3 hours. Principal writers andmovements in the literature of the United States from theReconstruction to the present day. Spring even years.EN 230. British Literature I - 3 hours. Principal writers andmovements in British literature from the Anglo-Saxons to theNeoclassicists. Fall odd years.EN 235. British Literature II - 3 hours. Principal writers andmovements in British literature from Romanticism to the presentday. Spring odd years.EN 310. Film Criticism and American Culture - 3 hours.Exploration of the cinematic components and the culturalbackground of landmark American films. Spring odd years.EN 315. Young Adult Literature – 3 hours. Reading intensivestudy of Young Adult Literature with <strong>major</strong> emphasis on currenttrends, significant authors, and <strong>major</strong> themes. This course willinclude workshops on current trends in motivating and preparingyoung and reluctant young readers to explore the world ofliterature created specifically for them. Fall even years.EN 326. Advanced Techniques of Composition - 3 hours.Intensive training in generating correct, clear, and forceful prosewith an awareness of a specific audience. Fall.EN 327. Technical and Professional Writing - 3 hours.Intensive instruction and practice in effective writing strategies forcareer searches, government agencies, business, and industry.Emphasis will be placed upon information gathering and thewriting of clear, correct, and properly formatted documentsincluding, but not limited to, persuasive letters and memoranda,summaries, oral and written reports, visuals and descriptions,instructions, PowerPoint, proposals and feasibility studies.
