PRESSRELEASEFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEDATE OF ISSUE: FRIDAY 11 JANUARY 2013COLLEGE CELEBRATES STUDENT SUCCESS<strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> has begun 2013 in style with its annual Further Education (FE) Award ceremony, held at HaselburyMill.Over 200 students, staff and special guests came to celebrate the outstanding achievements of adult and 14-19students from across the <strong>College</strong>’s full and part-time curriculum.Nearly 60 students from across Somerset and Dorset won FE Awards this year for Outstanding Achievement,Personal Achievement and representing the <strong>College</strong> in regional, national and international sporting competitions.Outstanding academic achievement was recognised in each of the <strong>College</strong>’s Faculty areas, while awards fordemonstrating excellent personal qualities were also presented. Kimberley Extance received the Volunteeringand Community Award, while Sophie Saint was named Most Improved Student. Donna Parsons received anaward for Commitment to Study. Representative awards went to Cross Country runners Tom Austin, GeorgeHarris, Jess Potter and Rosie Williams, who were part of the Men’s and Women’s South West <strong>College</strong>s teamswhich took gold at this year’s national championships, Ju-Jutsu champions Jake Dixon and George Noël, SouthWest <strong>College</strong>s Rugby players Craig Dunn, Jonny Hole and Ryan Hughes. Terri Trowbridge and Rosie Williamswere also recognised for their achievements in Football and Tom Minchington was highlighted as a Paralympian.There were nine top trophies and shields to present. The 14-16 Student of the Year prize went to Daniel Amatt(16) of <strong>Yeovil</strong>. Ryan Jones (19) of <strong>Yeovil</strong> was presented with the Stephanie Pirongs Award for PersonalAchievement, while Lysa Penlington (24) of <strong>Yeovil</strong> received the Nicola Locke Award for Outstanding PersonalAchievement. Two top prizes recognised contribution to the community. The Jan Howell Award forOutstanding Personal Contribution to the <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> Community went to Patryk Jadzinski (23) of <strong>Yeovil</strong>and Chelsea Board (18) of Ilminster received the Fred Janes Award for Outstanding Contribution to <strong>College</strong>Life. The winner of the Nikki Baker Cup for Student Endeavour was Victoria Batley (21) of Keinton Mandeville,who unfortunately could not attend as she is currently working in America.Academic achievement was also recognised. James Thorn (19) of <strong>Yeovil</strong> was named winner of the LawrenceCove Shield for Engineering Excellence and Joanna Churn (18) won the Roger Elvin Award for ModernLanguages. Catherine Wilkinson (19) of <strong>Yeovil</strong> was this year’s Tony Allum Award for Creative and EssayWriting.This year’s guest speaker was Lynne Sedgmore CBE, Executive Director of the 157 Group of FE <strong>College</strong>s andWhitehall advisor. She said “Tonight, this award ceremony, is about you and your success and achievements.Whatever award you received tonight, whatever skill or accomplishment you are being recognised for, I hope itfeeds into your sense of achievement and pride and that it stands you in good stead in the future. Enjoy beingrecognised, cherish it and really take it in. Feel proud of yourselves – this is not time for being modest or shy! Butalso remain grateful and humble. What matters most, I believe, is the effect the award has on you and how it canchange your life and confidence level for the better, allow yourself to become the best you are capable of being.Go for it!”<strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> Principal James Hampton said “Events like this are the highlight of the year for me, because ourstudents’ success and achievements really are what <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> is all about. As part of my role, I attend lots ofaward ceremonies, recognising academic achievement, dedication and hard work, ceremonies in schools and atuniversities. But I can honestly say that even after well over 30 years in education, it still gives me a thrill to be ableto share in the success of learners. Everyone, whether award winner or guest, has a right to be proud tonight;proud of our college, proud of our inspirational teachers, but most of all proud of our students’ achievements. It is awarded following an essay writing competition to a student/students who havedemonstrated creativity and original thought through their work.The Roger Elvin Award recognises a student who has achieved exceptionally well in the field of modernlanguages.Fred Janes Award for Outstanding Contribution to <strong>College</strong> Life is given in honour of Fred Janes OBE, the firstPrincipal of <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong>. He led the <strong>College</strong> from its creation in 1972 until 1984. The award recognises astudent who has made an outstanding contribution to the life of <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong>.The Stephanie Pirongs Personal Achievement Award is presented in memory of a <strong>College</strong> lecturer who sadlylost her battle with cancer in 2000 at the age of 41. Her work and commitment to her students never wavered andshe set an example to which we all aspire.The Jan Howell Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community is dedicated to Jan Howell, whoworked for the <strong>College</strong> for 11 years, making significant contributions to our community life. She understood ourstudents and always treated them with respect and sensitivity. She would do her utmost to support <strong>College</strong>performances and events and was a huge favourite among the students. In Jan’s sad passing, we not only lost avalued colleague, but a dear friend.The Lawrence Cove Shield for Engineering Excellence is awarded in memory of student Lawrence Cove, whowas killed in a road accident in 2001. He had been Apprentice of the Year for the whole South West and wasthought of very highly by his employers, Westland Aerospace Structures Ltd.Nikki Baker Cup for Student EndeavourThis award is presented in the name of Nikki Baker, a childcare apprentice who was tragically killed in a caraccident. Her peers decided to donate a cup in her memory.
