Frequently Asked Questions about ApprenticeshipsIf I take an Apprenticeship, what qualificationscan I get?Intermediate Apprenticeships include Technical andCompetence qualifications from the Qualifications CreditFramework (QCF) in your chosen vocational area andFunctional Skills qualifications. An overall Apprenticeshipframework certificate will be awarded when all theindividual components are achieved.How long do Apprenticeships take?Intermediate Apprenticeships usually take between12-24 months dependent on the occupational area.Advanced Apprenticeships are achieved within 2-4years, again dependent on the occupational areas andincorporate the same components as theApprenticeship, but at a Higher Level of achievement.How do I find a placement?Local vacancies are listed on the <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong>website www.yeovil.ac.uk. If you requirefurther learning or social support, then there are specialistdevelopment officers and mentors on hand to help.What happens if I change employer duringmy training?You must get an agreement from your new employer tobe able to continue your Apprenticeship. The TrainingCo-ordinator will then contact your new employer tocomplete the relevant paperwork.Will I be treated like other employees in theworkplace?Yes, your Training Co-ordinator will ensure that youare receiving your due rights, such as proper supervisionand opportunities for on-site training. All placements arecarefully vetted and monitored by the TrainingCo-ordinator to ensure that they uphold the requirementsof the Health & Safety at Work and Equal Opportunitylegislation. Like all employees you will have to abide bythe requirements of the employer in terms of attendance,punctuality, safe working practices etc.You will be paid at least the National Minimum wage of£2.65 per hour for 16-18 year olds (amount correct as of01/10/2012). You may be paid more, but this is agreedbetween you and your employer and very dependenton your age. Wages also vary across the differentoccupational areas. Celebrating Your SuccessEvery year, we celebrate our students’ fantastic achievements with two glamorous eveningawards ceremonies, called the Further Education (FE) Awards and Apprenticeship Awards.Further Education AwardsOver 200 students, staff and special guests came tothe 2013 FE Awards. Nearly 60 students from acrossSomerset and Dorset won awards for OutstandingAchievement, Personal Achievement and representing the<strong>College</strong> in regional, national and internationalsporting competitions.There were nine top trophies and shields presented. The14-16 Student of the Year prize went to Daniel Amatt.Ryan Jones was presented with the Stephanie PirongsAward for Personal Achievement, while Lysa Penlingtonreceived the Nicola Locke Award for Outstanding PersonalAchievement. <strong>Two</strong> top prizes recognised contribution tothe community. The Jan Howell Award for OutstandingPersonal Contribution to the <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> Communitywent to Patryk Jadzinski and Chelsea Board received theFred Janes Award for Outstanding Contribution to <strong>College</strong>Life. The winner of the Nikki Baker Cup for StudentEndeavour was Victoria Batley, who could not attend asshe is working in America. Academic achievement wasalso recognised, James Thorn was named winner of theLawrence Cove Shield for Engineering Excellence andJoanna Churn won the Roger Elvin Award for ModernLanguages. Catherine Wilkinson was this year’s TonyAllum Award for Creative and Essay Writing.The guest speaker was Lynne Sedgmore CBE, ExecutiveDirector of the 157 Group of FE <strong>College</strong>s and Whitehalladvisor. She said “Tonight, this award ceremony,is about you and your success and achievements.Whatever award you received tonight, whateverskill or accomplishment you are being recognised for,I hope it feeds into your sense of achievement andpride and that it stands you in good steadin the future.”Apprenticeship AwardsNearly 40 top apprentices and their employers werecelebrated at the second annual <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> andNorth Dorset Technical <strong>College</strong> Apprenticeship Awardsin November 2012. Apprentices from across Somerset,Dorset, Wiltshire and Devon received awards in 24categories, nearly double the number presented in 2011.The awards included those for Intermediate and AdvancedApprenticeships in Carpentry, Plumbing, BusinessAdministration, Contact Centres, Customer Service,Health & Social Care, Childcare, Hairdressing, ProfessionalCookery, Engineering, ICT and Print.<strong>Two</strong> overall Apprentice of the Year Awards were alsopresented. Kieron Lees was named IntermediateApprentice of the Year. He completed an Apprenticeshipin Electronic Security & Emergency Systems and isemployed by CIA Fire & Security. As well as excellingduring his training, he was part of the team which wonfirst prize at the IFSEC Apprentice Skills Challengecompetition in Birmingham earlier this year.The Advanced Apprentice of the Year was ICTProfessional Competence student Nathan Briggs, who isemployed by Dorset County Council. Staff described himas completing his work to an exceptional standard andmaintaining progress throughout his training, reachingsuch a standard that he is now mentoring the secondapprentice in his cohort. The guest speaker, Rupert Cox,Chief Executive of Somerset Chamber of Commerce,said “We are very lucky that some of the bestcolleges in England are here in Somerset and that<strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> is part of a great network of trainingproviders. Your apprenticeship is the start of yourworking life, not its conclusion. Use your apprenticeshipas a currency of attitude, commitment and attainment.It says something very important about you. Getting you into UniversityIn 2012, almost 200 <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong> A Level and Vocational students applied to universities,including top Russell Group members Oxford, Bristol, Cardiff, Nottingham, Southampton andWarwick, as well as Portsmouth, Plymouth, Bournemouth, Exeter, Bath, Reading and theUniversity of the West of England.Jasmine Burtonreceived an A in Physicsand A* grades forMathematics, FurtherMaths and her ExtendedProject Qualification(EPQ). The formerWestfield Academystudent said “I’m going tothe University of Exeter tostudy Mathematics. I’vealways liked Maths, butmy interest has really developed at <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong>. A LevelMaths is very different from GCSE, the topics covered aremuch more interesting.”Emily Pickupachieved two A* gradesin Photography andMathematics, as wellas an A in Further Maths.Emily is a former pupilof Preston Academy.Former StanchesterAcademy pupilJohn Every gained anA* grade in Mathematicsand an A grade in FurtherMaths, as well as Bgrades in Physics andComputing. He said “I’mgoing to the University ofExeter to study ComputerScience and Maths and hope to have a career in softwaredesign. My interest developed while I was at <strong>Yeovil</strong><strong>College</strong> because we learned about computer coding aspart of our course and did a project on it. Being at collegeis much better than being at secondary school becauseyou’re given much more freedom, there are fewerdistractions in class and there are better quality lecturers.”Rebecca Morris achievedthree A grades at A Level,in Biology, Psychologyand Law. Rebecca wentto Stanchester Academybefore coming to <strong>Yeovil</strong><strong>College</strong>.
