A Levels ExplainedWhat are the courses about?Studying at the Yeovil College A Level Academy allowsyou to build on your GCSEs by exploring four subjects ata higher academic level. As well as being the traditionalroute to university study, A Levels are also widelyrespected by employers, both for their academic contentand the transferable skills you gain.Yeovil College offers a wide range of A Level coursestaught by specialist teachers and almost any combinationof subjects is possible. When planning your programmeof study, you should consider which subjects you enjoythe most, what your academic strengths are and whichsubjects will be most helpful to you when applying foruniversity courses or jobs. Remember to check thewebsites of individual universities for their specific entryrequirements. The experienced staff at the College willbe happy to offer you advice when making these choices.Course DurationA Level courses are taught over two years. The AdvancedSubsidiary (AS) course is completed in year one andthe A2 course in year two. Each course is taught for4.5 hours per week.How will you be assessed?The AS and A2 courses each comprise of two or threemodules of which one may be coursework. To start an A Level programme, a pass at a Level 2Diploma may also be considered as part of the entrycriteria. Some courses make specific requirements interms of actual subjects and details are included in thecourse information in this prospectus. We also use theALIS scoring system of awarding eight points to everyGCSE achieved at A* down to one point for a G grade.We would expect a student to have an ALIS average of5.0 to begin an A Level programme.Additional ExpensesThere may be some additional costs associated withcertain courses. For example, you may need to buytextbooks, specialist equipment, including clothing,or contribute towards trips and residentials. For detailsof specific courses, see the course information in thisprospectus, visit www.yeovil.ac.uk or come to one ofour information evenings.ProgressionThere are over 100,000 Higher Education coursesavailable in the UK at over 300 providers from Aberdeento Bristol, London to the University Centre Yeovil. Entryrequirements for university courses can range from A*AAin three full A Levels to 80 UCAS points, equivalent totwo E grades.
