Desmond Dowling (1949)Pr<strong>of</strong>. Des Dowling died on June 23rd 2006. He was born in Rowena, New SouthWales, Australia. He spent his childhood at Rosebery Downs, near the township <strong>of</strong>Muttaburra in Queensland’s central west where he rode his horse 8km to schooleach day. He continued his education at Mount Carmel <strong>College</strong>, Charters Towers,and went on to study veterinary science at Sydney <strong>University</strong>, from which hegraduated in 1940. After serving as a veterinary <strong>of</strong>ficer in the Army with theNorthern Territory force, he completed an honours degree in science at Sydney<strong>University</strong>. Having won a scholarship he came to <strong>Downing</strong> and completed his PhDin less than two years, in the process pioneering new methods in animalreproductive technology. Following his return to Australia, Dr Dowling joined theCSIRO and in 1961 took up a position as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Science at The<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Queensland. He was originally appointed chair <strong>of</strong> animal husbandryand later Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Biometeorology. He left the <strong>University</strong> as EmeritusPr<strong>of</strong>essor. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Knights <strong>of</strong> St. John <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, the firstpresident <strong>of</strong> the Australian Association <strong>of</strong> Cattle Vets and was a founder <strong>of</strong> The<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Queensland Rotary Club, later receiving a Paul Harris Fellowship, thehighest Rotary tribute. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dowling is survived by his wife, Therese, sevenchildren, 14 grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren.Rex Gooch (1958)Mrs Anne Gooch has told us that her husband, Rex Grenville-Gooch has died.Peter Handley Gooderick (1944)The Reverend Peter Gooderick died on January 10th 20<strong>07</strong>. We hope to be able topublish an obituary in the 2008 issue <strong>of</strong> the Newsletter.Paul Isherwood (1972)Paul arrived at <strong>Downing</strong> from school in Bolton to read history, especially OliverCromwell and Josiah Wedgwood. But he stood out in two ways: he had a girlfriend,no mean feat in the then all-male college. More importantly, he also had a car,almost unheard <strong>of</strong> in those days. But as a family hand-me-down [it was beige],Paul had clearly got it for nowt or as a pretty keen bargain, always an importantconsideration to him.After <strong>Downing</strong> he returned to the family firm where he continued to learn muchabout enterprise. His lessons for those <strong>of</strong> his contemporaries that had, more typically,joined the public sector or the pr<strong>of</strong>essions were succinct. “There are only two thingsto remember about carpet-fitters: their knees go, and the taxman gets them.”49
