REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONSDENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTT1 ROADWAY PROJECTPUBLIC ART BUDGET: APPROXIMATELY $200,000 USDIntroductionThe Denver International Airport (DEN) Art & Culture Program (in collaboration with Arts &Venues Denver) seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an exterior work of art<strong>for</strong> the north wall of the T1 Roadway and bus station <strong>for</strong> the new South Terminal RedevelopmentProgram. The north wall is part of the Public Transit Center currently being constructed at DEN,and will be a very active bus station when it opens in 2015 and the artwork will be visible to thethousands of employees and travelers arriving by bus every day.The DEN Art Committee has recommended artwork that will give color and/or luminosity to a400-foot long masonry block wall on the north side of the bus drop-off area. Materials should bedurable, easy to clean and maintain and able to withstand dirt and snow/ice-melt chemicals thatmay be used in the area. This commission is open to artists/artist teams working in all media.The commission amount is $200,000 USD. Deadline <strong>for</strong> submitting portfolios is May 31, 2013,5:00 PM MST.About the South Terminal Redevelopment ProgramIn 2011, Denver International Airport began its first major <strong>airport</strong> redevelopment project sinceopening in 1995. The construction of a hotel and conference center, and train station connectingthe <strong>airport</strong> to downtown completes the original vision <strong>for</strong> the <strong>airport</strong>. This five‐year, $500 millionconstruction program will both strengthen the <strong>airport</strong>'s connection to the city’s urban core andturn the <strong>airport</strong> itself into a travel destination that will serve as a catalyst <strong>for</strong> economic growth inthe Denver metro region.The South Terminal Redevelopment Program is made up of three independent, yet physicallyintegrated projects, which include the design and construction of:519‐room Westin Hotel and Conference CenterPublic Transit CenterPublic PlazaThe Westin Hotel and Conference Center are slated to open in 2015 and the Public TransitCenter will open in early 2016.More in<strong>for</strong>mation and images are available on the DEN Business Center website:http://business.fly<strong>denver</strong>.com/bizops/southTerminal/index.asp


Public Art: Parameters & GoalsDIA’s South Terminal Redevelopment Program (STRP) will generate over $4.25 million inpermanent and temporary public art and design commissions over a three year period.Currently, the DIA Art Committee is seeking artists who are interested incorporating theirdesigns and ideas into the area of the T1 Roadway on the north side of the Public Transit Center.(Please See Attached Images)Location: The approximately 400-foot long wall is situated at the north end of the new PublicTransit Center that will be completed in 2015. The central part of the mural will be visiblefrom the commuter rail station that will also be completed in 2015 and the full span of thewall will be visible by thousands of employees and travelers arriving to the <strong>airport</strong> by bus.Materials & Media: The Art Committee is open to a mural that could be applied to the 400-foot-long wall or other two- or three-dimensional artwork or light/sound-based work.Durability & Maintenance: All public art projects in Colorado are exposed to weather,physical stresses and subject to vandalism. This artwork in particular should be fabricated ofhighly durable, low-maintenance materials. Materials must be able to withstand extremetemperature changes, easy to clean and maintain and continue to function/look good duringwinter months when the area will be wet and dirty from roadway use.Unique & Site-Specific: The selection panel seeks a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork <strong>for</strong> thiscommission that is appropriate <strong>for</strong> a transit center in one of the world’s busiest <strong>airport</strong>s.Artists must work with the operations and maintenance staff to make sure that the artworkcomplies with all <strong>airport</strong> and FAA guidelines and does not impede the activities of the <strong>airport</strong>or transit center in any way.Open Call: This project is open to all artists working in the materials & media listed above.Artists who currently live and work in the State of Colorado are encouraged to apply.BudgetThe budget <strong>for</strong> this commission is approximately $200,000 USD which will be allocated to theartists/team selected by the selection panel. This contract amount is inclusive of all costsassociated with the project including, but not limited to the artist’s design fee, other consultationfees such as structural engineering, insurance, including Colorado Workers Compensation andprofessional liability, small tools, materials, fabrication, transportation and installation, includingany building or site modification required, travel to and from the site, per diem expenses,project documentation, contingency to cover unexpected expenses and any other costs of anykind. For all work done on City property, prevailing wage requirements will be applied.

Artists are not required to have previousexperience in public art. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply <strong>for</strong> this commission.Maintenance and DurabilityAll applicants are expected to consider the issues of long-term conservation and maintenance ofpublic art, along with time and budget. Public art projects are in the public realm and maythere<strong>for</strong>e be exposed to weather, physical stresses and subject to vandalism. Public art projectsshould be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials. Semi-finalists areencouraged to consult with a professional conservator prior to the submission of a final proposal.Artist proposals awarded contracts will be reviewed by the Denver International AirportManagement and Operations divisions <strong>for</strong> adherence to all <strong>airport</strong>, City, and federal standards ofmaintenance and durability including ADA standards.How to Apply <strong>for</strong> this Opportunity:All artists who wish to apply <strong>for</strong> public art opportunities at Denver International Airport mustsubmit a portfolio <strong>for</strong> inclusion in the DIA South Terminal Redevelopment (STRP) ArtistRegistry.Registry Description:DIA’s South Terminal Redevelopment Program (STRP) will generate over $4.25 million inpermanent and temporary public art and design commissions. (The duration of theregistry is expected to be 4-5 years). In the case of teams,please submit a single résumé <strong>for</strong> the whole team.Registry Policies:As with all City and County of Denver percent-<strong>for</strong>-art projects, parameters and criteria <strong>for</strong> invitationand/or selection are developed by an Art Selection Committee made up of community members andarts professionals. The STRP Art Committee was created specifically <strong>for</strong> the South TerminalRedevelopment Program and is overseen by the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs.Artists and designers can be asked to submit their <strong>qualifications</strong> or portfolios of past work via invitationor by open call.Portfolios/applications will be reviewed by the Selection Panel <strong>for</strong> adherence to specific criteria,suitability <strong>for</strong> the project, and overall artistic excellence.All qualified individuals will be kept in a registry of artists who may be considered <strong>for</strong> future projectsover the next five years.The registry will have a term of no longer than five years. At the end of that term, the artists in theregistry will be contacted by staff to update their in<strong>for</strong>mation and portfolio or the artist registry will beclosed.Artists can be removed from the registry at any time <strong>for</strong> any reason.Designed to keep the registry at a manageable number, different registries can be created <strong>for</strong> differentpurposes (design registry, sculpture registry, etc.).Artists may submit portfolios <strong>for</strong> placement on the registry, but there is no guarantee of “prequalification”or commission.The art/design registries can be closed at any time <strong>for</strong> any reason; artists will be notified in thisinstance.There may be an entry fee associated with open calls. This fee is used only to offset the costs of theregistry system.
