Public Art: Parameters & GoalsDIA’s South Terminal Redevelopment Program (STRP) will generate over $4.25 million inpermanent and temporary public art and design commissions over a three year period.Currently, the DIA Art Committee is seeking artists who are interested incorporating theirdesigns and ideas into the area of the T1 Roadway on the north side of the Public Transit Center.(Please See Attached Images)Location: The approximately 400-foot long wall is situated at the north end of the new PublicTransit Center that will be completed in 2015. The central part of the mural will be visiblefrom the commuter rail station that will also be completed in 2015 and the full span of thewall will be visible by thousands of employees and travelers arriving to the airport by bus.Materials & Media: The Art Committee is open to a mural that could be applied to the 400-foot-long wall or other two- or three-dimensional artwork or light/sound-based work.Durability & Maintenance: All public art projects in Colorado are exposed to weather,physical stresses and subject to vandalism. This artwork in particular should be fabricated ofhighly durable, low-maintenance materials. Materials must be able to withstand extremetemperature changes, easy to clean and maintain and continue to function/look good duringwinter months when the area will be wet and dirty from roadway use.Unique & Site-Specific: The selection panel seeks a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork for thiscommission that is appropriate for a transit center in one of the world’s busiest airports.Artists must work with the operations and maintenance staff to make sure that the artworkcomplies with all airport and FAA guidelines and does not impede the activities of the airportor transit center in any way.Open Call: This project is open to all artists working in the materials & media listed above.Artists who currently live and work in the State of Colorado are encouraged to apply.BudgetThe budget for this commission is approximately $200,000 USD which will be allocated to theartists/team selected by the selection panel. This contract amount is inclusive of all costsassociated with the project including, but not limited to the artist’s design fee, other consultationfees such as structural engineering, insurance, including Colorado Workers Compensation andprofessional liability, small tools, materials, fabrication, transportation and installation, includingany building or site modification required, travel to and from the site, per diem expenses,project documentation, contingency to cover unexpected expenses and any other costs of anykind. For all work done on City property, prevailing wage requirements will be applied.
Pre-Submission MeetingInformation about this and application procedures will be provided during a pre-submissionmeeting or via video link (more information will be sent via email and posted on:http://business.flydenver.com/bizops/artProgram.asp)EligibilityThis project is open to artists, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, nationalorigin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion or affiliation or mental or physical handicap.Artists working in any media are eligible to apply. Artists are not required to have previousexperience in public art. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply for this commission.Maintenance and DurabilityAll applicants are expected to consider the issues of long-term conservation and maintenance ofpublic art, along with time and budget. Public art projects are in the public realm and maytherefore be exposed to weather, physical stresses and subject to vandalism. Public art projectsshould be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials. Semi-finalists areencouraged to consult with a professional conservator prior to the submission of a final proposal.Artist proposals awarded contracts will be reviewed by the Denver International AirportManagement and Operations divisions for adherence to all airport, City, and federal standards ofmaintenance and durability including ADA standards.How to Apply for this Opportunity:All artists who wish to apply for public art opportunities at Denver International Airport mustsubmit a portfolio for inclusion in the DIA South Terminal Redevelopment (STRP) ArtistRegistry.Registry Description:DIA’s South Terminal Redevelopment Program (STRP) will generate over $4.25 million inpermanent and temporary public art and design commissions. The DEN Art and CultureCommittee seeks artists who are interested incorporating their designs and ideas into thisunique setting.The STRP Artist Registry is now accepting portfolios of past work (or relevant conceptual work)via Slideroom.com for Phase II commissions, which includes permanent and integratedartwork, design projects and temporary installations for the new South Terminal RedevelopmentProgram.All portfolios entered into the registry during Phase II will be automatically entered into a broadpool of artists to be considered for all future phases of STRP commissions. (The duration of theregistry is expected to be 4-5 years). Artists may remove their portfolios from the registry orchange the media/materials on the registry at any time by sending an email toSTRPart@flydenver.com.
