Notifying APhAThe winner must call the APhA National Office to schedulean appointment for the National Competition 1-800-237-APhA (2742), Ext.7514. An alternate should also be selectedin the event that the winner is unable to attend the NationalCompetition at the APhA2013 Annual Meeting & Expositionin Los Angeles, CA. The deadline for scheduling an appointmentis February 1, 2013.B. Required ProceduresA checklist is provided on page 18 to prepare the local winnerfor the National Competition.Each local winner must be an APhA-ASP member andmust be registered for the APhA2013 Annual Meeting &Exposition in order to compete in the National PatientCounseling Competition. The winner is responsible forcontacting the APhA National Office to schedule his or herNational Competition appointment by February 2, 2013.An alternate should also be selected in the event that the winneris unable to attend the National Competition at the APhAAnnual Meeting. A chapter may arrange financial assistance forits representative’s travel expenses to the National Competitionif funding is available. The top finishers at the National Competitionwill receive their cash awards after the APhA AnnualMeeting. The chapter should ensure that its representative hasthe financial resources necessary for the entire convention.Confirmation of the appointment time and location for thecompetition will be sent to the individuals along with specificdetails about the National Competition procedures. Participantsshould verify their appointment time immediatelyupon receipt of the confirmation email.Individuals participating in the National Competition mustbe at the assigned location 10 minutes prior to the appointedtime. Since the competition operates under a very rigid schedule,there will be no make-ups for missed sessions. Participantsare strongly encouraged to remain at the meeting for theAPhA-ASP Awards Ceremony on Monday evening.C. Schedule and PlanningIt is essential that participants in the National Competitionschedule their appointments BEFORE making airlineand hotel arrangements. Do not assume that appointmentswill be available at the local winner's convenience.Experience has shown that Friday and Saturday afternoonappointments fill-up first. If an appointment has notbeen reserved for a school or its winner and the studentis unable to compete in the remaining slots available,the student will be unable to participate in the NationalCompetition.To allow ample time for judging, the National Competitionpreliminary round will begin on Friday morning and runthrough Saturday afternoon. The final round will be held onSunday morning. Participants will know Saturday eveningwhether they have advanced to the final round. The APhA-ASP Awards Ceremony will be held Monday evening.Each participant will also receive a list of 10 medicationsfrom which the medications for the preliminary and finalrounds will be chosen.D. Conducting the NationalCompetitionThe National Competition will be conducted in a similarmanner to the local competition, only more challenging.Students are encouraged but not mandated to attend theorientation.
