The Art of Patient Counseling 2013Part III Guidelines for the National Competitionpetition rules and procedures before their counseling sessionsbegin. The rules are few and the directions are intentionallysomewhat ambiguous to allow for discretionary creativity onthe part of the student relative to the elements of a positivepharmacist/patient interaction. The student will be allowedfive minutes to consult drug information resources and fiveadditional minutes for counseling the patient, who will berole-playing a specified character. All counseling sessions willbe videotaped. The decisions of the judges will be final.All finalists will receive a framed lithograph. Second, third,and fourth prizes are $700, $500, and $300, respectively.Mementos will be given to all participants.APhA will publicize the competition and the winners to thestate and national pharmacy media.E. Awards ProgramThe winner of the National Competition will receive $1,000and a National Patient Counseling Competition plaque withthe winner's name engraved on the front. It is a tradition thatthe winner of the National Patient Counseling Competition beinvited back the following year to serve as a judge for the nextNational Competition. The winner’s school will receive a replicaof the National Patient Counseling Trophy.11
