<strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong>Mov<strong>in</strong>g Beyond SightTHE IDEAThe social exclusion of disabled people and <strong>the</strong> unequal chances <strong>in</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same opportunities for education, career, transportation, and leisure facilities are a major challenge around <strong>the</strong> world. The <strong>in</strong>teraction between“abled” and “disabled” people is often h<strong>in</strong><strong>de</strong>red by stereotypes, fears, avoidance and prejudices. The prevail<strong>in</strong>gop<strong>in</strong>ion that disability is “less worthy than normal” leads to discrim<strong>in</strong>ation and marg<strong>in</strong>alization of <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d anddisabled worldwi<strong>de</strong>. There is a lack of un<strong>de</strong>rstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> potential that might arise out of a handicap.Andreas He<strong>in</strong>ecke took <strong>the</strong> i<strong>de</strong>a that experienc<strong>in</strong>g extraord<strong>in</strong>ary and powerful emotions that are mentallychalleng<strong>in</strong>g, not just have a long last<strong>in</strong>g effect on people, but also improve <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>the</strong>ir human <strong>in</strong>teractions.The i<strong>de</strong>a gave rise to <strong>the</strong> concept of <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong>, <strong>the</strong> un<strong>de</strong>rly<strong>in</strong>g paradigm for which come from <strong>the</strong>German-Jewish philosopher Mart<strong>in</strong> Buber’s work The Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of <strong>Dialogue</strong> which states: ”The only way to learn isthrough encounter“.<strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly is not an ord<strong>in</strong>ary exhibition or a bus<strong>in</strong>ess workshop. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, it is a platform forcommunication and a close exchange between different cultures, provok<strong>in</strong>g a change <strong>in</strong> perspectives.THE CONCEPTExhibitionIn <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> exhibition visitors are led by bl<strong>in</strong>d gui<strong>de</strong>s <strong>in</strong> small groups through a specially constructedand totally darkened exhibition – where sounds, w<strong>in</strong>d, temperatures and textures convey <strong>the</strong> characteristics ofdaily environments such as a park, a city or a bar. In <strong>the</strong> dark, daily rout<strong>in</strong>es become a new experience. A reversalof roles is created: sighted people are torn out of <strong>the</strong>ir familiar environments, los<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>the</strong>y rely on most -<strong>the</strong>ir sight. Bl<strong>in</strong>d people gui<strong>de</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, provi<strong>de</strong> <strong>the</strong>m with security and a sense of orientation - transmitt<strong>in</strong>g a worldwithout pictures. The bl<strong>in</strong>d and partially sighted gui<strong>de</strong>s open <strong>the</strong> visitors' eyes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dark to show <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>irworld is not poorer – just different.Bus<strong>in</strong>ess WorkshopIn <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> workshop, participants rely on bl<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>structors to gui<strong>de</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> complete darkness fortwo hours. The participants learn to dare, share and care, and will work out strategies to solve common taskstoge<strong>the</strong>r. Communication and cooperation are <strong>the</strong> essential tools for success. Participants are <strong>the</strong>n escorted out of<strong>the</strong> darkness for an hour of reflection and <strong>de</strong>brief<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> transition from disempowerment to empowerment. They learn to use hid<strong>de</strong>n senses more effectively and come to th<strong>in</strong>k twice about abilities and disabilities.THE IMPACTExhibitionThe <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> exhibition has been presented <strong>in</strong> more than 30 countries and over 160 sites throughoutEurope, Asia and America s<strong>in</strong>ce its beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1988. So far, 6 Million visitors have experienced <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Dark</strong> worldwi<strong>de</strong>, and 6,000 bl<strong>in</strong>d employees found a job and empowerment through <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong>.www.dialogue-<strong>in</strong>-<strong>the</strong>-dark.com

Through <strong>the</strong> exchange of roles – <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d gui<strong>de</strong> can „see“ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dark, <strong>the</strong> visitors are “bl<strong>in</strong>d“ – <strong>the</strong> emotionalimpact is stronger; <strong>the</strong> visitors ga<strong>in</strong> an experience that leads to reflection, social bor<strong>de</strong>rs get reduced, ignorancegets changed <strong>in</strong>to openness and <strong>in</strong>terest and pity turns <strong>in</strong>to respect.<strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> is an <strong>in</strong>cubator that aims for social <strong>in</strong>tegration of bl<strong>in</strong>d and o<strong>the</strong>r marg<strong>in</strong>alized people byoffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m a platform to present <strong>the</strong>ir skills, potentials and personality, a chance to ga<strong>in</strong> more self-confi<strong>de</strong>ncethrough a challeng<strong>in</strong>g job and <strong>in</strong><strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nce through a self-earned salary.Thousands of guest-book comments reflect <strong>the</strong> impression <strong>the</strong> exhibition has on its visitors - <strong>the</strong>y are moved by<strong>the</strong>ir experience and are positively impressed by <strong>the</strong> gui<strong>de</strong>s. Survey results, ask<strong>in</strong>g visitors about <strong>the</strong>ir experience, show that 96% of <strong>the</strong> visitors to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> exhibition th<strong>in</strong>k it is "of great importance to <strong>the</strong> society”1,80% of <strong>the</strong> visitors to <strong>the</strong> exhibition stated <strong>the</strong>y believed that a visit to <strong>the</strong> exhibition assists <strong>in</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g attitu<strong>de</strong>stowards <strong>the</strong> handicapped population <strong>in</strong> general and not only towards <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d population, 98% of <strong>the</strong> visitors stated<strong>the</strong>y would warmly recommend to friends to visit <strong>the</strong> exhibition.Bus<strong>in</strong>ess WorkshopIn <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> workshops, <strong>the</strong> sightless environment forces <strong>the</strong> participants to <strong>de</strong>al with <strong>the</strong> sud<strong>de</strong>nwithdrawal of a key sense: vision. As <strong>the</strong>y rediscover <strong>the</strong>ir o<strong>the</strong>r senses, <strong>the</strong>y also awaken <strong>the</strong>m to new aspects ofpersonal power and perception. Listen<strong>in</strong>g and talk<strong>in</strong>g become vital, because <strong>in</strong> this environment those who don’tcommunicate cease to exist. So far <strong>the</strong>re have been over 300 workshops <strong>in</strong> more than 10 countries with over 4,500 participants. Through <strong>the</strong>irthree stages of immediate impact – rang<strong>in</strong>g from giv<strong>in</strong>g an impulse to reflect, prompt<strong>in</strong>g a mechanism to cope toprovid<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>spiration to change – <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess workshops leave a last<strong>in</strong>g impression forheightened awareness.Participants are triggered to reflect on <strong>the</strong>mselves and on <strong>the</strong>ir relation to <strong>the</strong>ir social environment which forms<strong>the</strong> basis for streng<strong>the</strong>ned <strong>in</strong>tra- and <strong>in</strong>terpersonal <strong>in</strong>telligence. On <strong>the</strong> one hand, this is realized by nurtur<strong>in</strong>g selfawarenessand heighten<strong>in</strong>g sensibility to own emotions and effective measures to <strong>de</strong>al with <strong>the</strong>m. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rhand, <strong>Dialogue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dark</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess workshops prompt participants to turn towards <strong>the</strong>ir social environment tocope with <strong>the</strong> situation and to <strong>de</strong>velop an open m<strong>in</strong>dset as well as trust and empathy with o<strong>the</strong>rs.A survey based on <strong>the</strong> analysis of more than 300 questionnaires and a sample of 20 <strong>in</strong>terviews shows thatparticipants are <strong>in</strong>spired to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir way of <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g with o<strong>the</strong>rs and to pursue a more cooperative andcollaborative approach (43%), sensibilized <strong>in</strong> terms of self-awareness and streng<strong>the</strong>ned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir self-confi<strong>de</strong>nce toface unknown environments (30%) and encouraged to <strong>de</strong>velop trust and empathy and to become more openm<strong>in</strong><strong>de</strong>dtowards <strong>the</strong>ir social environment (28%).Three out of four participants reported to have translated lessons learned <strong>in</strong>to an <strong>in</strong>creased self-awareness, aconsciousness for matters of communication, and more openness towards o<strong>the</strong>rs. Many felt to have anchored <strong>the</strong>lessons <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir subconsciousness or <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir overall behavior.THE TESTIMONIALSThese exhibitions and workshops have received tremendous feedback wherever <strong>the</strong>y have been organized. Some of<strong>the</strong> notable events where <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dialogue</strong> workshops have provi<strong>de</strong>d a unique learn<strong>in</strong>g experience <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong> <strong>the</strong> summitsorganized by <strong>the</strong> World Economic Forum, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir annual meet<strong>in</strong>g at Davos.1Study was conducted by <strong>the</strong> Midgam Institute and or<strong>de</strong>red by <strong>the</strong> Service for <strong>the</strong> Bl<strong>in</strong>d at <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Social Affairs and Social Service <strong>in</strong>Isreal.
