A Letter to the Congregationfrom Rabbi GlickmanPresident’s Day, MLK Day, and Uss Barack Obama is being sworn in as our forty-forth President this month, within a month of both Martin Luther King Day and Presidents’ Day, it causesone to pause on the significance of this historical moment. There is littleI can comment on this historic occasion that has not already been said byothers more knowledgeable and eloquent than I.By Rabbi David M. GlickmanHowever, I would like to try to examine this historical moment through Jewish lenses.Obama’s election has forced us to examine what the criteria are for calling someonean “American.” Obviously, Obama’s name and skin color are different in nature fromthe 43 men who sat in his office before him. In addition to externals, taking the roadless traveled has marked Obama’s internal life journey. The unique trajectory ofObama’s life was central to his campaign, as well as being a target for his detractorswho identified him as an “outsider.”Despite Obama’s unique personal narrative, he is fully American, and his electionforces us to remember that America is a nation that was founded on values, is definedby a mission, and is governed by a Constitution. Remembering that American identityis not defined by either race or ethnicity calls to mind the way we define Jewishidentity.I remember a congregant who approached me last year and said: “Rabbi, I don’tconsider converts full Jews. Is that wrong?” My response is: “Yes. It is wrong. It isalso racist.” Defining somebody as Jewish only by dint of their DNA is not an accurateunderstanding of Jewish law.Being American is very similar to being a Jew. There are two ways that one canbecome an American: through birth or naturalization (or in the case of slaves after theCivil War, through the ratification of the 14th Amendment). Similarly, there are twoways that one can become a Jew: being born to a Jewish mother, or undergoing therite of conversion according to Jewish Law.While not a biologist, I did take high school biology. We all trace our ancestry toAbraham and Sarah from the land of Ur (present day Iraq), yet very few AshkenaziJews look like Iraqis. Most Ashkenazi Jews look like other Europeans. Most Jewsfrom North African nations have the visible characteristics of North Africa. Theseracial differences in “born” Jews probably came about through conversions in our ownfamilies somewhere in our own family trees. Our religious identity is comprised of faith and nationality; we have a Jewish beliefsystem and we are the People of Israel. Some of us choose to cast our fate with thefate of the people Israel, other of us are born into that destiny. As Americans, we arealso who we are by dint of birth and belief. The singularity of belief and mission iswhat ties Americans together, and is what ties Jews together. The motto of the United States of America, e pluribus unum “Out of many comes one,”could just as easily be the motto of the Jewish people. Over these next two months, when we celebrate an inauguration of a new administration, the peaceful departureof an old administration, the celebration of Presidents’ Day, the observance of MartinLuther King Day, I invite you to take a moment to pause and be grateful. We areblessed to live in a country whose history is marked by over two centuries of peacefultransitions from one political leader to another, and we as Jews living in Diaspora havenever had a more hospitable home.1

Most are celebrated during a Saturdaymorning Shabbat service and the whole congregation is welcome to celebrate with the family. It is important for the boy or girl who is leading all or part of the Shabbat service to see that many attend services, andthat their leadership of the service is acknowledged by congregants who are not family members. Services begin at9:00am with the recitation of several introductory prayers before the formal beginning of the shachrit (morning) service.Your early presence is requested so that a minyan can be assured, especially for those who come to recite the Kaddishprayer. While we have Shabbat services every Saturday morning, I hope this will dispel the feeling that you should only attend abar or bat mitzvah service if you receive an invitation from the immediate family. After all, Congregation Shearith Israelis a family.Marvin Noble2

By Rabbi Michele SullumTurn SaturdayInto Shabbat withWeitzman FamilyReligious School!Religious School for FamiliesHeld on three Shabbatot(Saturdays) in January(No January Sunday School)Families who do not attend Weitzman Family ReligiousSchool are welcome and invited to join us! Email CherylJackson cjackson@shearith.org for a complete schedule.Jump Into Learning! - Jump Into Community!Jump Into Family Time! - Jump Into Friendships!Jump Into The Weitzman Family Religious School…On Shabbat! We live in exciting times and we want to be part ofeverything going on. Our cell phones and PDAs mean thatwe’re constantly connected to everything that’s important.HDTV, surround sound stereo, IMAX movies, and gamessuch as Rock Band, make us part of the action. We’re nolonger content to be spectators, we want to be players ineverything we do, and that includes Religious School.Parents don’t sit on the sidelines at Religious Schoolsanymore. All over the country, parents are getting outof their cars and coming into the synagogues while therabbis, the school directors, the parents, and most of alltheir children, are cheering them on. Parents are comingto Sunday school! They’re studying with their childrenand with one another; they’re meeting in committees andthey’re gathering with friends. They want to jump in andbe part of their children’s Jewish learning experiences—and they want their own Jewish learning experiences aswell. We are delighted and excited that this country-widephenomenon has arrived at Shearith Israel and we are sodelighted to bring our Religious School students and theirparents to synagogue for Shabbat School during the monthof January. Why hold Religious School on Shabbat? Shabbat, with allof its rituals reminding us of the wonders of our universe, has always been, the mainstay of the Jewish people. AhadHa’am, the great Zionist thinker and ideologue, is quotedas saying, “More than Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbathas kept the Jews.”When we gather together on Shabbat we affirm everythingthat makes us unique as a people and the common beliefsand values that unite us. We put everything we have learnedat school into action. Gadol talmud torah shemevi lidayma’aseh. Torah study is only great because it brings usto a place where we actively create the community whereJewish life is lived.11How do we do that? We jump in! We participate. We sing.We learn. We give ourselves to the experience and we areopen to receiving anything the experience might offer us.In doing so, we give ourselves and our families—not justour children—gifts that are beyond price: a place whereour souls can soar, a chance to make friends that can lasta lifetime, and an extended family in which we can mournour sorrows and celebrate our joys.Shabbat School HighlightsShabbat School Session #1Saturday, January 10, 2009 - Douglas Campus9:15am – 12:00pmR.S.V.P. if to Cheryl Jackson at cjackson@shearith.org if you’restaying for Kiddush lunch!!Highlights• The Meaning Behind the RitualsA Learning Torah Service for parents• Power Up Hebrew!Hebrew Intensive Activities for students in grades K-7• Looking Through Joseph’s EyesAn Intensive Text study for Teens• Synaplex sessions for parents, middle school students, and teens• Grade-Level “Chazak” Programs, celebrating the conclusionof the book of Bereshit (Genesis)• Student and Family participation in the Beck Family SanctuaryService.Shabbat School Session #2Saturday, January 24, 2009 - Beit Aryeh Campus9:15am – 12:00pmR.S.V.P. if to Cheryl Jackson cjackson@shearith.org if you’restaying for Kiddush lunch!!Highlights• Teen Torah Study with Rabbi Gershon• Power Up Hebrew!Hebrew Intensive Activities for students in grades K-7• Move-Along Musaf service for teens withRabbi Gershon.• Synaplex sessions for parents• Special Rosh Chodesh Activities for all grades• Student and Family participation in the Beit Aryeh SanctuaryService.Shabbat School Session #3Saturday, January 31, 2009 - Douglas Campus9:15am – 12:00pmR.S.V.P. if to Cheryl Jackson cjackson@shearith.org if you’restaying for Kiddush lunch!!Highlights• Parent Study Session with Rabbi Gershon• Power Up Hebrew!
