L’hitraot, Until We Meet Again
On a cold morning in New York City eleven years ago, I met a
young senior rabbinical student. He had suggested we meet
at a teashop on the upper west side of Manhattan. At the
time I thought it odd since I had never been to a teashop.
by Rabbi William Gershon Right from the beginning, this future rabbi thought differently
than his peers and in time I would learn just how creative
and unconventional his thinking about so many things would be. Bespectacled and
bearded he projected a mix of intellectualism, warmth, spirituality and youth. He
was full of ideas, deep Torah knowledge and a kind of “out of the box” thinking that
one rarely finds in a young and relatively inexperienced rabbinical student. He was
confidant without being haughty; strong in his convictions, yet humble. I shared
my vision of the rabbinate and for Shearith Israel with him and in a phrase, “we
hit it off.” For eleven years David Glickman has been a loyal, trusted and valued
friend and colleague. During his time at Shearith he has made an indelible imprint
on the hearts and minds of so many in our congregation and in the greater Dallas
Jewish community. In addition to his spiritual leadership at Beit Aryeh, David
spearheaded many creative and innovative programs at Shearith Israel, uplifted
our hearts with his uncanny sense of humor, challenged us with his unique brand
of Torah – tapping into popular culture and technology in novel and unexpected
ways. He comforted the bereaved and attended to the sick, counseled and prayed
with many, celebrated b’nai mitzvah, britot and baby namings, anniversaries and
other milestones, officiated at funerals and weddings.
I could not have asked for a more wonderful, talented and sage colleague to help
me grow this congregation for more than a decade. His dedication to our shul has
been extraordinary.
When he came to me over two years ago to say that it was time to begin to look
for his own pulpit I could only be supportive. But deep down I knew I would miss
someone whom Raquel, our kids and I had grown to love and respect. He has
enriched my life beyond measure. And while I would like to take some credit
for his remarkable growth as a rabbi and leader, truth be told, it is I who have
learned so much from him. He has emerged as a rabbinic leader in his own right.
Congregation Beth Shalom of Kansas City is blessed to have him, along with his
remarkably talented and wonderful Annie and their beautiful children, Gavi, Ellie
and Dani.
We shall have the opportunity to honor the Glickmans and bid them farewell at a
reception, which will be held on Sunday, June 10th.
I hope you will join us as we say not goodbye, but l’hitraot, until we meet again,
to the Glickmans. They will always have a special place in our hearts.
Shavuot
Observing the Night we Received the Commandments
Saturday, May 26 – Monday, May 28
Please note that we will be holding our all-night
Tikkun Leil Shavuot on Saturday, May 26, at Beit
Aryeh this year. We will conclude with a Sunrise
Shacharit service, followed by breakfast at 5:30 am.
This year, we are pleased to host Rabbi Juan Mejia
for Shavuot.
Rabbi Mejia was born in Bogota, Colombia. When
he was 15, he discovered his converso roots and
began to explore the history of the secret Jews of
Latin America. This process eventually led him to
Jerusalem, where he rejoined his people and decided
to pursue the rabbinate in order to help others
find their Jewish souls. There he met his wife, Abby Jacobson, also a
rabbinical student.
Rabbi Mejia holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy from the
National University of Colombia and a Master’s degree in Jewish
Civilization from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received
Rabbinic Ordination from the Rabbinical School of the Jewish Theological
Seminary and is currently Be’chol Lashon’s Southwest Regional Director.
Rabbi Mejia teaches classes to conversos in seven countries through his
website: www.koltuvsefarad.com. Rabbi Mejia lives with his wife and
daughter in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Study Opportunities
You will be able to choose from a selection of study opportunities
throughout the night. So you’ll remember that learning is sweet – and
that dairy food is a Shavuot tradition – enjoy sweet treats throughout
the night, including our famous blintz reception!
All-night learning will feature Rabbi Bill Gershon, Rabbi David Glickman,
Rabbi Juan Mejia, Avi Mitzner and Rabbi Eve Posen.
HOW IS THIS YEAR DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER YEARS
The word year in Hebrew - shanah and the word change in Hebrew - shinooy share the
same root. A new year in essence suggests that a change is taking place. Inspired by the holiday of
Pesach that we just left (and I am about to start preparing for, as I write this article) I share with you
a Weitzman Family Religious School version of the four questions:
IN ALL THE YEARS…
We learn Hebrew. We learn about Jewish history, Holidays and tradition.
THIS YEAR…
We solidified our understanding of the prayers and our fluency in reading them. We are following a
program that will allow us to be familiar with all the services that are led in the synagogue and all the
holidays that we celebrate. Students progressed in their Hebrew reading according to their levels and
were able to get a sense of pride in their accomplishments. We had family programs for all grade levels
where parents and students came together for learning. Our 3rd graders received their own Siddur in a
meaningful ceremony where they led the Friday night service. Our 4th graders led the Mincha service
and havdalah and some students for the first time read from the Torah. Our 5th graders lead a Passover
seder following a Haggadah that they all created. Our 10th graders will be confirmed in a beautiful
ceremony that will conclude in a dinner and a special presentation titled “I am a Jew…”
IN ALL THE YEARS…
We have opened our doors and included children with special needs in our program.
THIS YEAR…
We expanded our services for our students with learning differences by providing them advocates in
the classes to help them during the instructional time. Teachers received an in-service with instructions
about the specific students that are in their classrooms. We also reached out to the community and
invited families with children with special needs to join our Purim prep session and we trained our 6th
graders to facilitate the children activities.
IN ALL THE YEARS…
We perform many acts of Mitzvah. We raise tzedakah money to assist various organizations and causes.
THIS YEAR…
We sent educational material, decorated kipot and greetings for the New Year to a small Jewish
community in Uganda. Students were bringing tzedakah money to every session and we are able to
collect enough money to send to various organizations that the students will select. Our High School
students volunteered at the Vickery Meadow area, met with the Heart House staff, and led some
activities for the children who live in the neighborhood.
IN ALL THE YEARS…
We connect with Israel through studies.
THIS YEAR…
Two of our confirmation class students joined the Israel trip. Our High School students also deepened
their studies and understanding of Israel’s history and the situation in the country today through
discussions and lectures. We teamed up with a school in Akko, Israel. Our 5th and 6th graders
corresponded with them and exchanged projects. Students in the elementary school wrote me letters to
take to Israel with questions about Israel. They received the letters back with answers and comments
about Israel.
“Got Shabbat!”, our once a month youth service, is a great addition to our program. We added an art
teacher to our staff to boost hands-on activities and to offer another way of learning. Our confirmation
class will present the synagogue with a gift for the Sukkah that they are creating. They will leave our
school with a mark of their participation in Jewish education growing up at Shearith.
There are many more things that we did this past school year, and there are many more things that
we did not and will make sure they are not missed as we plan the coming year. May the Elijah’s cup,
symbolizing the future messianic redemption, Miriam’s cup of water, symbolizing hope and renewal in
present time, be also symbols for the “changes” and “repeats” in our lives.
Leah, Miranda and the teachers join me in thanking Rabbi Gershon, Rabbi Glickman, Cantor Itzhak
Zhrebker, Avi Mitzner, Kim West, Sharon Levin and the officers, SISterhood, the school board and the
maintenance crew for the guidance, leadership and support throughout this year. To the parents and
students we wish a pleasant and safe summer, and we are looking forward to welcoming you back on
August 26th.
grade levels where parents and students came together for learning. Our 3 rd graders received their
own Siddur in a meaningful ceremony where they led the Friday night service. Our 4 th graders led
the Mincha service and havdalah and some students for the first time read from the Torah. Our 5 th
confirmed in a beautiful ceremony that will conclude in a dinner and a special presentation titled “I
Shabbat Morning Torah Study
Torah Study is held every Saturday morning
at 8:30 am in the Esther and Jacques Sardas
Beit Midrash. Confront the most challenging
messages in the weekly Torah reading,
engage in passionate dialogue, and leave
intellectually stimulated and spiritually
inspired! Join dozens of congregants for the
weekly Shabbat Morning Torah Study with
one of the Rabbis. The coffee is hot, the
muffins are sweet, and the door is open just
for you.
Tuesdays with Tanakh
Tuesdays with Tanakh is an exciting
opportunity for in-depth study of biblical
books outside of the Torah (the first five
books of Moses). Rabbi Glickman leads
twice-monthly sessions that explore some of
the lesser known, but eminently fascinating
books of the Hebrew Bible. While no
previous knowledge or Hebrew is required,
the discussion is sophisticated and relevant
materials from rabbinic commentaries and
modern biblical scholarship are considered.
This learning community meets the second
and fourth Tuesday of every month, from
1:00 to 2:30 pm in the Esther and Jacques
Sardas Beit Midrash.
near future, announcing the slate of directors
being nominated to the Board for the coming
year. All members of the Congregation are
President’s Letter/Mid-Term Report - Susan Ehrlich
As the first year of my presidency ends and the second begins, I reflect with pride on
SISterhood’s many accomplishments. The theme for my presidency has been CSI,
Communicate (information), Stimulate (involvement) and Integrate (members). So in an
effort to Communicate with the shul congregants as well as SISterhood members, I would
like to share with you some of our new projects and programs.
• SISterhood contributed to much needed improvements in our shul kitchen. We spent in
excess of $30,000 this year purchasing:
• convection ovens for both the meat and dairy kitchens
• glassware, platters, storage and dishwasher racks
• a gas griddle for the dairy kitchen
• 40 round tables
• Thanks to Salli Goldstein and Arona Ackermann, we added two new programs this year,
trying to reach out to those who can’t or don’t like to go out in the evening. We had a
beautiful and well-attended Winter Luncheon and Style Show in December, and sprinkled
throughout the year, we had Movie in the Morning at the Pidgeon Family Theater.
• Sheryl Pidgeon and Nancy Roffman were instrumental in starting SISterhood’s new initiative
to sell healthful snacks to religious school students on Wednesday afternoons with the Snack
Shack.
• Our Mitzvah-a-Meeting Chairs, Shira Goldberg and Melissa Steiner worked closely with the
IMPACT committee as we conducted monthly mitzvahs including collecting school uniforms,
writing High Holy Day cards to our Jewish troops, collecting for the coat drive, supporting
the Berry Family fundraiser, collecting blankets for the Austin Street Shelter, collecting baby
items for the Vogel Alcove and supporting the Dallas County Humane Society.
• Myra Migicovsky, serving as Historian, has faithfully photographed all our major events.
Many of her photos have been posted on Facebook.
• Insuring good communications with our members and the whole congregation, Lori Cohen
served as our publicity chair, and thanks to Avra Carr, SISterhood now has a presence on
Facebook. Be sure to “like” us there and watch as we post information and pictures from our
events as well as new items in The Gallery.
• In an effort to recognize and express our gratitude, SISterhood has begun a tradition of
presenting a small gift to the CSI staff at Thanksgiving and religious school teachers at the
end of the year.
All of these are in addition to our continuing programs and activities:
• Membership Drive
• Fundraising including High Holy Day Booklet, Major Fundraising Event with this year’s
keynote Jennifer Weiner, the Tootsie Fonberg, z”l Mah Jongg Tournament, The Gallery,
Passover Candy Sales
• Torah Fund this year honoring Shirley Davidoff
• Sponsorships and underwriting of Golden Years Shabbat Kiddush luncheon, Truck Time,
Young Professionals event, Family Center end of year party, fruit for the Sandwich Drive
• Programs including Miriam’s Seder, Break the Fast at Beit Aryeh, SISterhood Shabbat
• We continue to support the Weitzman Family Religious School with gifts for the bar/bat
mitzvah students as well as confirmation, high school and college graduations, supplying
treats and favors for holidays, providing stipends for Israel travel and scholarships for
USY conventions and underwriting the cost of the program where our students create
their own yads (Torah pointers).
None of these programs and initiatives would be possible without the dedication and
commitment of the SISterhood Board of Directors. This is a multigenerational board, all of
whom lead busy lives in and out of our shul. I am thankful for their generosity, creativity,
passion and spirit.
I especially want to thank my extraordinary Executive Committee for diligently heading their
various committees and working cooperatively at our quarterly meetings to set policies and
procedures. These ladies are dedicated to SISterhood and the shul and each one provides
a unique insight for our consideration. The Executive Committee includes Laurie Steinberg,
Janice Berman, Nancy Roffman, Laura Collins, Dora Rudberg, Arona Ackermann, Abby
Goldfarb, Miriam Honig, Roz Benjet, Karen Topletz, Cynthia Cohen, Andrea Bard, Lisa Fleisher,
Gail Mizrahi, Brenda Levine and Debbie Weinstein. Most of these ladies will continue on for
my second term.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Klay Kodesh, Kim West – our new COO,
and the CSI Officers and staff members for supporting SISterhood in all its endeavors. In
particular, I would like to thank Sharon Levin, CSI President, for working so closely and
cooperatively with me to insure that SISterhood’s goals could be met. I look forward to
working with all of you again in the coming year.
