Words Spoken by Rabbi William Gershon
At the Welcome Shabbat for Rabbi David Singer
When I first met Rabbi Singer in New York, I encountered someone who I really felt
had a remarkable intellectual depth, graced by a beautiful neshama and authentic
rabbi voice. He exuded passion and love for Torah, for the Jewish People, for
Israel. He professed a deep faith in God, in the power of prayer and importance of
community. When he interviewed with us, we were all inspired by his teachings.
He handled every teaching moment with aplomb and humility.
I was privileged to be present at his rabbinic ordination from the Ziegler School of
Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University. The rabbi who presented him
for ordination wrote the following about Rabbi Singer:
“Spend time speaking with David about practically anything and you have the
privilege of being in the presence of a soul who is truly there, open to personal
transformation, and ready to add new insight into the world…David’s keen ability
to live, preach and teach from his heart... Transforms so many who glean his
wisdom… His gifts manifest in his ability to weave together – often seamlessly –
paths to piety with practical application, modern ideas with ancient perspectives,
and profound compassion with inclusive boundaries.”
David, you possess wonderful gifts and I am so proud to have you join me to lead
this congregation.
your partners in this ‘avodat kodesh,’ holy work. You will be privileged to partner
to create a caring, embracing, vibrant and sacred community.
On behalf of Cantor Zhrebker and Avi Mitzner, your Klay Kodesh partners in crime,
we welcome you to our family.
On behalf of Raquel, Benji, Eliana and Yoni, Baruch Habah. We are really glad you
are here.
In the book of Joshua, when God spoke to Joshua to assume the leadership of the
Jewish people, God offered these words which I hope will have deep meaning for
you, David:
The Torah shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day
and night, that you may act according to all that is written therein, for then
your ways shall prosper. Be strong and of good courage; be neither frightened
nor dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Hazak V’ematz, be strong and of good courage and may you go michayil el chayil
from strength to strength.
Amen.
W F R S
weitzman family religious school
Freda and Nathan Schepps Youth Program
Dina Eliezer
Director, Weitzman Family
Religious School
“If you are traveling with a child or someone who
requires assistance, secure your mask first, and then
assist the other person.”
Having families abroad in Israel and France is one of the reasons we fly a lot. While
airplanes and airports have changed since the first time I boarded a plane in 1974,
the words of the flight attendant on security observance in the plane have not
changed, except for the language, of course!
“In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will automatically
drop from the compartment above your seats. To start the flow of oxygen, pull
the mask toward you. Place it firmly over your nose and mouth, secure the elastic
band behind your head, and breathe normally. Although the bag does not inflate,
oxygen is flowing to the mask. If you are traveling with a child or someone who
requires assistance, secure your mask first, and then assist the other person.”
This year those last words made me think of a similar message that we, educators,
want to try to convey to our families: preparing yourself so that you can help
another is a family lesson for Jewish education.
My teacher Rabbi Larry Hoffman claims that if we consistently separate little
children from their parents at times of prayer, the children may learn by rote the
rules of how to function as worshipers, but they will never achieve the warmth that
comes from being with their parents at sacred times. If their highest emotional
peaks are reached while watching a Mavericks or Cowboys game with Mom and
Dad, or riding bikes as a family, basketball, football and bike riding will become
their most important moments.
This summer I spent four days at Camp Ramah Darom in Georgia. For two, three,
four or even eight weeks, the kids are immersed in an environment where Judaism
is everywhere and everything and is not just two hours at the synagogue. Chaim
Potok, speaking about camp experience describes it as “education caught rather
than taught.” When attending a Jewish camp, camp becomes a Jewish community.
Unfortunately we cannot bring camp home. What we CAN do is find a way to
secure the children’s parents’ and grandparents’ masks first.
Rabbi Menahem Mendel of Kotzk never flew in an airplane, but he understood very
well the importance of securing parents’ masks first: a man asked him how he
could make his children devote themselves to the Torah. Rabbi Kotzk answered, “If
you really want them to do this, then you yourself must spend time over the Torah
and they will do as you do. Otherwise, they will not devote themselves to the Torah
but will tell their children to do it, and so it will go on….” If you yourself forget the
Torah, your children will also forget it, only urging their children to know it, and
they will forget the Torah and tell their children that they should know it, and no
one will ever know the Torah.
The Weitzman Family Religious
School is happy to announce two
new additions to the religious
school staff, Stephanie Buch, and
Mali Gariani.
Read all about them on page 4.
As we embark into a new year, let’s grab those adult education masks, the family
program masks, the “Got Shabbat” masks, Jewish holiday masks. Let’s secure
them well, so while we inhale we can secure the ones for our children.
Mali, Stephanie, Miranda and the teaching staff join me in wishing you and your
families a happy and healthy New Year.
FREE, program just for you and your baby!
PREVIEW SESSION:
Surviving High Holidays with Your Infant
Monday Sept. 10
10:00 am-12:00 pm
Series begins October 15
Did you just have a baby? On maternity leave this fall? Just getting used
to staying at home? Having the time of your life? Just wishing all the
darn hormones would go away? Join fellow new mothers for Beresheet
(In the Beginning), a free 7-week series facilitated by experienced
moms who collectively have seen it all. We will begin and end each
two-hour session with plenty of schmoozing and noshing time, and in
between, we will use Jewish texts as the basis for practical discussions
about adjusting to everyone’s new life raising a child, juggling a family
and taking care of everyday needs. While we talk, babies are welcome
to sleep, eat, cry or just be. We will even have extra hands to hold
your baby if all you need is an “adult break.” By the end of the series
you will leave with an additional branch on your support network, a
stronger parenting “toolkit,” and some familiar faces to see at future
Family Center events.
Please register by contacting Suzanne Minc at sminc@shearith.org or
214.939.7340, so that we can plan for refreshments and an appropriate
number of facilitators. Everyone who registers is strongly encouraged
to attend all seven sessions, but we all understand that “life happens”
and we hope to see you for as many classes as your schedule allows.
All classes are from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon.
Our topics are as follows:
• Intros and Birth Stories
October 15
• All About Me
