SME COMPETITION
JUDGED COMPETITION
The Standard of Mopar Excellence competition
pits some of the fi nest Chrysler,
Plymouth and Dodge vehicles in the
country against a standard of excellence
as opposed to other cars. The winners
will be staged for awards at the parade
on Sunday.
The competition is based on a
100-point formula and the vehicles are
evaluated by a team of knowledgeable
judges. The formula divides the judging
into fi ve separate areas: engine bay,
body, interior, undercarriage and operations
test. Dave Ferro of Totally Auto Inc.
is the founder and head judge of the SME
competition. Ferro designed the concept
for the SME competition more than
a decade ago.
Each year a group of the best Mopars
enters the competition to earn the
much-sought-after SME status. SME is
open to everything from wild customs to
totally stock restorations and everything
in between. SME challenges the participants
to take the judges’ advice, make
the recommended improvements and
return next year with hopes of beating
their previous score. At right is a sample
of just a few of the many vehicles that
will be competing in the SME Competition,
during the weekend.
Last year’s highest scoring car was
a 1971 Plymouth GTX owned by Robert
and Pam Easton. The Easton’s GTX
scored 94.25 out of a possible 100 points.
The Eastons have returned to SME ready
to improve on their score from last year.
RETRO DEALERSHIP
GO BACK TO 1970 IN BUILDING G - OUTSIDE GATE 1
Chrysler Corporation launched a lot of new models in 1970 and made some major changes to several others. To some it was the
high-water mark of styling and performance. Given the chance to travel back in time, lots of Mopar folks would probably choose
1970 for a variety of reasons. Whether you favor the Mopars of 1970 or not, there’s no denying how many new or redesigned models
were introduced that year. The Challenger was totally new and the only thing on the Barracuda that was carried over was the nameplate.
The Duster was new, the Dart was totally restyled and the Road Runner was off ered as a SuperBird. And let’s not forget Pistol
Grip shifters, Shaker hoods and Air Grabbers, a full array of High Impact Paint colors and Rallye wheels to name a few new things on
the order form in 1970. Thanks to the car owners (listed here) and the eff orts of Art Reisinger and Dan Walmer of Art’s Toys & Hobbies
and Dennis and Allen Kohr of Kohr’s Kustoms, we are pleased to bring you the 1970 Retro Dealership, known as Beeney Motors. Set
the dial on your Way Back Machine to 1970 and enjoy the ride!
