The site is reportesupport a number <strong>of</strong> IUCN red-listed species..A view <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deepor</strong> <strong>Beel</strong><strong>Deepor</strong> <strong>Beel</strong> has both biological and envir<strong>on</strong>mental importance besides be<strong>in</strong>gthe <strong>on</strong>ly major s<strong>to</strong>rm water s<strong>to</strong>rage bas<strong>in</strong> for Guwahati city.It is c<strong>on</strong>sidered as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the stag<strong>in</strong>gsites for migra<strong>to</strong>ry birds <strong>in</strong> India; andsome <strong>of</strong> the large c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong>aquatic birds <strong>in</strong> <strong>Assam</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ter.Because <strong>of</strong> the richness <strong>of</strong> avian faunait enjoyed, <strong>Deepor</strong> <strong>Beel</strong> has beenselected as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the Important BirdArea (IBA) sites by BirdlifeInternati<strong>on</strong>al. <strong>Deepor</strong> beel has alsobeen designated as a Ramsar Site <strong>in</strong>November 2002.Sewage from Guwahati – a majorsource <strong>of</strong> polluti<strong>on</strong> - enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Deepor</strong><strong>Beel</strong><strong>Deepor</strong> beel provides a means <strong>of</strong>livelihood for a number <strong>of</strong> localfamilies. Nymphaea nuts, flowers,etc., are harvested for sale <strong>in</strong> thelocal markets and these c<strong>on</strong>stitutevaluable natural crops.
