Team members <strong>on</strong> cruise <strong>in</strong> side <strong>Deepor</strong> <strong>Beel</strong>The Team accompanied bythe ASTEC <strong>of</strong>ficial & CCF(WL)cruised <strong>in</strong> a country boat, <strong>in</strong>a part <strong>of</strong> the beel be<strong>in</strong>gdesignated as sanctuary.Thewater <strong>in</strong> the entire areaappeared <strong>to</strong> be turbid,grossly polluted andorganically enriched, withhigh levels <strong>of</strong> putrificati<strong>on</strong>and pr<strong>of</strong>use growth <strong>of</strong>hydrilla and water hyac<strong>in</strong>th.The Team advised CCF <strong>to</strong> take all possible measures <strong>to</strong> reduce/regulate the <strong>in</strong>flow<strong>of</strong> untreated city sewage <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the beel near the san ctuary area <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> withthe Guwahati Metropolitian Development Authority and local authorities. ASTECwas asked <strong>to</strong> submit proposals for sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> 2 S TPs <strong>on</strong>e at the po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> sewageflow <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Basistha and its dra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the B eel. It is reported that the pasttwo decades have witnessed a lot <strong>of</strong> transformati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> the ecological and socialcharacter <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deepor</strong> <strong>Beel</strong>. Some <strong>of</strong> the natural and anthropogenic activities that arethreaten<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Deepor</strong> <strong>Beel</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude:• C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> railway l<strong>in</strong>e al<strong>on</strong>g the southern boundary <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Deepor</strong> beel;• Industrial development with<strong>in</strong> the periphery <strong>of</strong> the beel;• Large scale encroachment with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Deepor</strong> beel area;• Allotment <strong>of</strong> government vacant land <strong>to</strong> private parties by Governmentsettlement department;• Brick kiln and soil cutt<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the beel ecosystem;• Hunt<strong>in</strong>g, trapp<strong>in</strong>g and kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> wild birds and mammals with<strong>in</strong> and <strong>in</strong> theadjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deepor</strong> beel;• Unplanned and destructive fish<strong>in</strong>g practices without any c<strong>on</strong>trol/regulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>mesh size, etc.Large-scale encroachment, heavy siltati<strong>on</strong> from the denuded hills surround<strong>in</strong>g thebeel, accumulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> all sorts <strong>of</strong> filth and wastes from the Bharalu and Bah<strong>in</strong>irivers, unregulated fish<strong>in</strong>g practices, <strong>in</strong>vasi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> aquatic weeds, <strong>in</strong>dustrialdevelopment with<strong>in</strong> its periphery, c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> railway l<strong>in</strong>e al<strong>on</strong>g the southernboundary, quarry<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the beel ecosystem, etc., have pushed this <strong>on</strong>ce-prist<strong>in</strong>eecosystem <strong>to</strong> the br<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> disappearance.7
