Door RollersThe door roller housing is made from styrene tube. Makethe end pieces per the diagram and glue them to the rollerhousings. Next, glue the back plate on, followed by the topplate. This housing is painted with Reefer Grey, as well. Oncepainted, it can be glued on to the face of the wall just abovethe doorway, as shown in the diagram and Photo # 4.Doors and TracksThe doors are made from .125" scribed .040" styrene sheet.Make two doors as per the drawing. Paint these Reefer Grey. The door tracks are made from .100" styrene channel. Youwill need two pieces, one piece glued on the inside of thedoor frame on either side, as shown in the drawing. Paintthese Grimy Black. The doors are then slid up into the tracksand glued. The door for the rail entrance is made short to representan open door. This allows rail cars to be spotted in thebuilding. The truck entrance has a full length piece, so thedoor appears closed.powders. I also painted any of the inside walls that canbe seen with Grimy Black. The FoundationWith the building all finished, it’s time to put it in place onyour layout. This means track has to be laid and a foundationhas to be made. These types of buildings usually have a concrete floor. Youcan model this by making a wood form in the shape of thefootprint of the building, then pouring a plaster floor. Paint it aconcrete color. You can also make it out of styrene like I did.Don’t forget to leave flangeways along the track. With this alldone, your new building can be put into place and theground covering finished around it.Congratulations. You have now scratchbuilt a building(and you thought it was going to be hard!).◆photo #5Acmephoto #3Finishing TouchesThe roof vents are made from Rix HO Scale vents, whichto me seem too large for HO, but work well for O Scale. Paintthese silver, then glue them to the roof (Photo # 5). The buildingis now complete, other than signage and weathering. This style of building is used for many types of industries,so you can choose the type and name you want to put on it. Imade the signs for mine on the computer, then glued them toa piece of .040" thick styrene sheet, which I then glued to thebuilding. I weathered my building using washes and chalkphoto #4Bill of MaterialsEvergreen Scale Models,18620-F 141st Ave. NE,Woodinville, WA 98072,(425) 402-4918, www.evergreenscalemodels.comStyrene:Part # 14530, Metal Siding .125 width, and three sheets12 x 24 inches.Part # 19060, Plain sheet .060 thick one sheet 12 x 24inch.Part # 389, .125 x .250 strips 24 inch long, twopackages.Part # 126, .020 x .125 strip 12 inch long, threepackages.Part # 236, Tube .500, 12 inch long, and one package.Part # 263, Channel .100 wide, 12 inch long, onepackage.Part # 294, Angle .125, 12-inch length, and fourpackages.Rix Products,3747 Hogue Rd.Evansville In. 47712,(812) 426-1749, www.rixproducts.comPart # 611, VentsLiquid plastic cement, paint and modeling tools.July/Aug ’04 - O Scale Trains • 15
