When Older Americans Month was established, only 17 millionAmericans had reached their 65 th birthdays. About a third of them lived inpoverty and there were few programs to help them. Thankfully, interest inolder Americans and their concerns was increasing and in April of 1963,President Kennedy’s meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizensserved as a prelude to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month.” UnderPresident Carter, the designation was changed in 1980 to “Older AmericansMonth” and a tradition was born. I think this year’s theme—“Unleash thePower of Age”—is very fitting because it captures the productivity andenergy older adults bring to their communities in so many ways. They sharetheir well-honed and diverse talents, wisdom gained through years ofchallenge, triumph and unique life experiences—often earned through the“school of hard knocks.”Our friends at the state Commission on Aging (CoA) note that CT isfortunate to have a tremendous pool of older-adult talent and experience tohelp enrich our communities through volunteerism, service on town boardsand for many, as productive members of the workforce. The CoA tells us that:CT is the seventh “oldest” state in the nation, with more than 500,000people aged 65 or older from a total population of 3.5 million. We are home to one million baby boomers born between 1946 and1964—the oldest among this group are turning 67.From 2000 to 2010, CT’s population of people over 85 grew by 32%--thefastest growing segment.Between 2006 and 2030, the population of people 65 and over will haveincreased by 64%.Our state’s population is richly complemented by approximately 930people who are at least 100 years old!Though more work remains, our state and nation have made a great deal ofprogress since 1963 in recognizing the contributions older adults make to ourcommunities and in planning for the challenges and opportunities broughtabout by an aging population. Thank you, one and all, for your contributionsto our community—and join your fellow Americans this month to “Unleashthe Power of Age!”Mature Driver Screening ProgramIf you are a licensed driver, the Hartford Hospital AdultInjury Prevention Center invites you to have a FREE andConfidential one-hour assessment of your safe driving abilities.
