We hosted our annual Tree of Love at the Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg on
Saturday, December 3, 2011. The Tree of Love is both
a community memorial service and a fundraiser for
Hospice Caring.
A glowing and moving evening was created in
which we remembered parents, siblings, children,
spouses, and friends who are no longer with us. The
evening began with a candle lighting ceremony,
followed by songs, responsive readings, the reading
of approximately 300 names in memory or honor of
loved ones, and light refreshments. Involved in the
evening were 25 participants, including volunteer
bereavement facilitators and current members of our
various adult bereavement support groups.
We are grateful to the Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church (Hospice Caring’s first “home”), Edge Floral
Event Designers, and the women of the Gaithersburg
Lions Club for generously providing the spiritual
space, floral beauty, and lovely desserts for the evening.
On Monday, June 20, 2011, the 5th Annual Hospice
Caring Golf Tournament was held at the Montgomery
Village Golf Club, Montgomery Village, MD. Over
100 golfers enjoyed breakfast before teeing off in
the morning sunshine. After a lovely day of doing
something they love while supporting Hospice Caring
and their community, the golfers had a delicious lunch
sponsored by the Germantown OutBack Steakhouse.
We wish to extend a very special thank you to our
golf committee: Leslie Childs and Karen Thomas of
Village Settlements, Buffy Foster of Long and Foster
and Bonnie Sakmar of Sakmar Realtor, PA. Their hard
work and dedication organizing the event ensured a
fun event and helped to raise a record setting $28,430.
These funds will have a great impact on Hospice
Caring programs that reach out to patient and families
during the darkest times of their lives. We also thank
our family of volunteers who joined us to make this
event possible. We hope you can join us next year at
our 6th Annual Hospice Caring Golf Tournament!
The 2011 GaLa
Hospice Caring’s Roaring Twenties Gala was a spectacular evening
held at the Bolger Center on Saturday, October 15th. Dazzling gowns,
antique jewelry, twenties headpieces and even gents in spats lent an air
of authenticity to the celebration. Dr. JC Hayward reigned as our lovely
Mistress of Ceremonies. The Mead Family Foundation was honored for
their years of compassionate generosity and ongoing belief in our mission.
Betsy Mead, President of the Mead Family Foundation, accepted a picture
of the mural painted in their honor as part of the new Indoor Garden
in the Hospice Caring Cottage. Trustee Steve Ornstein, Edge Floral
Designs, transformed the ballroom at the Bolger Center into an elegant
showcase of white and gold. Our guests made unprecedented pledges
for our Program Services Fund-a-Need drive. Local artist Greg Mort,
and his wife Nadine, donated 200 copies of his book Voyages which he
personalized for our guests during the Gala. He also donated his beautiful
print, Collected Light, which was museum framed. We launched the sale of
our first edition cookbook, Recipes to Remember, with a Celebrity Chefs
Addition that was auctioned off. It was a wonderful record breaking event
for Hospice Caring. Over $220,000 was raised for our organization.
