Camp Caring Makes a Difference
Camp Caring, a once yearly 3-day weekend
camp provided without charge, celebrated its
10th year at the beautiful Skycroft Conference
Center outside Middletown, Maryland. Thirty
Little Buddies and 30 Big Buddies shared their
stories and participated in specially designed
creative activities to help the children explore
and share their feelings with peers and others
who understood what they were going through.
Children have no voice for their grief and some
cannot take their grief home. In this carefully
supervised, warm, and friendly environment,
the children feel safe about sharing their
thoughts and feelings about the loss of their
loved one. Campers learn that their often
confusing feelings are perfectly normal. When
they return home, they feel uplifted and
empowered by the valuable tools they have
acquired at camp. The children see that they are
not the only ones who have lost a loved one and
their feelings are validated. Camp Caring makes
a difference that lasts a lifetime.
Three very special guests came to be with
the Little Buddies. “Slapshot” from the
Capitol’s Hockey team and “Gecko”
from GEICO surprised the children
Friday night. They played and danced the
night away to the delight of everyone.
Dr. Shirley Kay, who was instrumental
in making 10 years of Camp Caring
“happen,” visited at lunch on Saturday.
When asked “What is hard about camp?”
she replied, “Not being able to come.”
Her love of children and her trust in
Hospice Caring to be the support that
could help children with their grief will
always be cherished and remembered.
