2 Awareness of <strong>the</strong> <strong>UN</strong> Conventionon <strong>the</strong> Rights of <strong>the</strong> ChildArticle 42 of <strong>the</strong> ConventionStates Parties undertake <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>and</strong> provisions of<strong>the</strong> Convention widely known, by appropriate <strong>and</strong> active means, <strong>to</strong>adults <strong>and</strong> <strong>children</strong> alike.This chapter presents <strong>children</strong>’s <strong>and</strong> <strong>young</strong> <strong>people</strong>'s knowledge of <strong>the</strong> <strong>UN</strong>Convention on <strong>the</strong> Rights of <strong>the</strong> Child. The respondents were asked whe<strong>the</strong>r<strong>the</strong>y had heard of <strong>the</strong> Convention <strong>and</strong>, if so, through what channel. Somewere also asked what <strong>the</strong> Convention was about <strong>and</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y thought itwas important <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. The first three areinterpreted as ‘yes’, <strong>the</strong> last as ‘no’.It will be seen from Table 1 that about half of <strong>the</strong> <strong>children</strong> had heard of <strong>the</strong>Convention. There was some variation between <strong>the</strong> municipalities, from 43 <strong>to</strong>67 per cent. There were also differences within <strong>the</strong> individual municipality.The oldest pupils might perhaps be expected <strong>to</strong> be most aware of <strong>the</strong>Convention, but this was not necessarily <strong>the</strong> case. In Bjugn <strong>children</strong> at <strong>the</strong>primary school (70 per cent) had <strong>the</strong> greatest, <strong>and</strong> <strong>children</strong> at <strong>the</strong> lower secondaryschool (45 per cent) <strong>the</strong> least, awareness of <strong>the</strong> Convention, while uppersecondary school pupils (61 per sound) were between <strong>the</strong> two. In Skedsmo,true enough, it was <strong>the</strong> 16-year olds who were best acquainted with <strong>the</strong>Convention, at close <strong>to</strong> 86 per cent, while 70 per cent of <strong>the</strong> 11 year olds, bu<strong>to</strong>nly 56 per cent of <strong>the</strong> 13 year olds, <strong>report</strong>ed being aware of <strong>the</strong> Convention.12– NOVA Report 2b/08 –
