Village VisionInternational Centre for Advancement of Rural <strong>Eye</strong> careNews & Events6 Vision Centres inauguratedA total of 6 new primary care Vision Centres (VC) wereinaugurated during the quarter <strong>April</strong> – <strong>June</strong> <strong>2008</strong>. The fiveattached to the secondary care Sudhakar and Sreekanth Ravi<strong>Eye</strong> Centre, Markapuram, are located at: Giddalur,Thripuranthakam, Yerragondapalem, Dornala, andBestavaripeta. With this, <strong>LV</strong>PEI has completed the establishmentof 19 out of 30 Vision Centres in Prakasam district. The LavelleFund for the Blind, Inc., USA, supported the VCs attached toMarkapuram.The sixth Vision Centre at Medarpet village is attached to thesecondary care Seshanna Chennawar <strong>Eye</strong> Centre, Adilabad.This was inaugurated on <strong>June</strong> 14, <strong>2008</strong>, in the presence of MrLawrence Lyerly and Ms Toni Lyerly, volunteers from the IndianSociety of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ThisVC completes the 8 Vision Centres project in Adilabad, supportedby the church. The Medarpet VC is the 49 th Vision Centre to beset up by <strong>LV</strong>PEI.6 th anniversary of Karamchedu satellite centreVenkat Lakshmi <strong>Eye</strong> Centre, the third satellite centre of <strong>LV</strong>PEI,celebrated its sixth anniversary on <strong>June</strong> 7, <strong>2008</strong>. Since itsinception, the centre has screened around 50,000 outpatientsand performed more than 7000 surgeries, 70% of them free ofcost.At the program guests and beneficiaries expressed theirhappiness that the centre was serving needy and poor patients,delivering quality eye care services in Prakasam district. Thecentre has the capacity to see even more patients and performmore surgeries. The notable guests at the celebrations includedMr Nageshwar Rao, husband of the village sarpanch and MrVeerabhadra Chary, a teacher and beneficiary. The programconcluded with the presentation of Best Employee awards andgifts to employees for participation in sports events.3 rd anniversary of Adilabad satellite centreSeshanna Chennawar <strong>Eye</strong> Centre, the fourth satellite centre of<strong>LV</strong>PEI, celebrated its third anniversary on <strong>June</strong> 9, <strong>2008</strong>. Sinceits inception, the centre has screened over 26,000 outpatientsand performed more than 3600 surgeries, 70% of them free ofcost.A review of the centre’s performance showed that the targetsset for the year 2007 – <strong>2008</strong> had been achieved. The credit forthis goes to the hospital staff, doctors and supporters of thecentre. The centre has scope for greater revenue generationby seeing more paying patients. Among the notable people atthe celebrations were Mr Kondaiah Chowdary, farmer unionleader, Mr Prakash, family member of a donor, Mr KrishnaReddy, MPDO, and other beneficiaries.
