The Institute had beentrying to address this issue by planning a good screening and referral program. Now a two-way referral system has beenset up for providing tertiary care to babies undergoing ROP management in Kolkata by Dr Abhijit Chatterjee at PriyamvadaBirla Eye Hospital. Three babies referred here in time underwent prompt vision restoration ROP surgery during the quarter. This called for tremendous team effort due to the challenges of transportation, scheduling surgery and ascertaining fitnessfor general anesthesia in these very fragile babies.Ocular Oncology ServiceIn 2004, Dr Parin Vakharia set up a Corpus Fund for treatment of children with eye cancer, in memory of late Olive Swoboda. The fund has enabled L V Prasad Eye Institute to provide quality tertiary cancer care to hundreds of children fromunderprivileged families free of charge. This quarter the total number of procedures performed on children withretinoblastoma was 457. Of these 213 children were treated absolutely free of charge. The procedures performed includedexamination under anesthesia, laser transpupillary thermotherapy and cryotherapy, as well as hospital-based chemotherapy, and surgical procedures like enucleation with orbital implant and plaque brachytherapy.6

While under treatment, my relative expressed hiswish to donate his eyes if he did not survive. Even at such a young age he had a social commitment. We donated his eyes to fulfill hisdesire, with the hope that they would give new life to others. It gives us great satisfaction that though he is no more his eyes still lookupon this world. This makes us feel that he is still living in this world with us.” – Expressions of a donor familyCorneal tissues donated to RIEBTotal 426Tissues received from RIEB supportersTotal 40282April - June303Year to Date303April - JuneYear to Date1231230 100 200 300 400215105*Activity Year: April 2008 to March 2009MotivatedVoluntaryRIEB Affiliate Centres at Suryapet, Nidadavole & TanukuEBCRC: Eye Bank Coordination & Research Centre (eyesreceived only for practice)Other Eye BanksCommunity Eye Banking ProgramA total of 118 corneas were distributed to corneal surgeons outside LVPEI, within and outside Andhra Pradesh.Other Eye Banks in Andhra Pradesh(No. of corneas/eyes received in brackets)The Khammam Eye Bank, Khammam (65); Smt.
