During this period 90 students were enrolled in the programme. In May BITS, Pilani, called for admissionsfor the academic year 2008–2009 and, subsequently, shortlisted the candidates. Selections will be finalised by BLSO and BITS. In theacademic year 2007–2008 optometry students from other colleges came to BLSO, LVPEI, for internship. Nineteen external internsfrom various colleges across India will join the internship program.MSc Optometry & Vision Science – a University of Hyderabad program in collaboration with LVPEIThe University of Hyderabad called for applications for the integrated five-year master’s program in Optometry & Vision Science,conducted in collaboration with LVPEI. The very first batch of 20 students will start in August. The principal of BLSO has developedthe curriculum and will coordinate the course.BSc Optometry & Ophthalmic Techniques – an IGNOU distance learning programTen students have joined the IGNOU BSc Optometry & Ophthalmic Techniques at LVPEI Bhubaneswar last year. Efforts are also beingmade to start the IGNOU degree course at LVPEI Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad.Vision Technician courseThe Vision Technician course trains students for work in rural (secondary) hospitals and Vision Centres. About 60% of the studentsare meant for LVPEI’s community eye health programs. Most of the other students come through sponsors outside Andhra Pradesh.During the report period 73 students participated in the Vision Technician program.Guest LecturesHyderabadProf Vinod Pavarala, Dean, Sarojini Naidu School of Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Communications, University of Hyderabad, delivereda lecture on Media Globalisation and Alternative Media on April 9, 2008.Mr Mazher Hussain, Executive Director, COVA, spoke on Indian Foreign Policy in the Sub-Continent: A People’s Perspective on May 14, 2008.Ms R Akhileswari, Senior correspondent, The Deccan Herald, Bangalore, delivered a lecture on The media under attack on June 11, 2008.BhubaneswarDr Bikash R Pattnaik, PhD, Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, USA, delivered two lectures on ERG Abnormality and Visual Pathophysiology,Ion Channel in Epithelial Transport on April 11 and 12, 2008.19
