Dear Members of the Academy Community,
Next week the Year 12 students enter their last week of official
schooling. I am sure they, like us, find it very hard to believe that
the year has gone by so quickly.
On behalf of the College I extend our best wishes to our Year 12
students and wish them well as they finish their schooling and enter
into the examination period. I encourage them to keep working
steadily over the weeks ahead. The end is in sight!
I would particularly like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the
efforts of the Year 12 teachers this year. They have worked
tirelessly to support the students and their professionalism,
expertise, and care are much appreciated. Special thanks to Mr
John Andritsos, Year 12 Coordinator, for his encouragement of the
students and his dedication and hard work.
Education is not just about preparing young people for the future. It
is about giving them the skills, confidence, and heart to shape the
future. It is not just about giving them knowledge, but about
encouraging them to be all that they can be—to reach their full
potential—to enable them to be people who will make a difference
in a world that desperately needs honest, strong, compassionate
leaders.
A Prayer for School Leavers
Hope for the Journey
As we look to tomorrow,
Let us today embrace the past with
remembrance
And the future with longing.
Let us face our future with confidence and
hope,
Daring to stay open to whatever today will
offer us, or tomorrow;
Daring to go fearlessly into things without
knowing how they will turn out;
Daring to keep on going, even when
something doesn’t work out for the first
time.
Let us pray that we travel into our future
With a trust that enables us to put our
hand into the hand of God,
Confident that it will be better than a
light,
And safer than a known way.
In the words of our Mission statement I believe that we have
empowered the Year 12 students to be “Global Citizens of the 21 st Century” and have formed “centered
women who are resilient and who have a sense of social responsibility in the tradition of Mercy”.
Japan
Staff and students have recently returned from an enriching trip to Japan where students studied at Nishiyama
High School for a two week period and lived with host families. Many thanks to the staff who accompanied the
students – Ms Lee De Sarro, Mr Angelo De Cata and Ms Melanie Malakunas
In 2013 there will be a reciprocal arrangement in place with students from Nishiyama High School attending
the Academy and staying with our host families. We are also looking forward to welcoming the new Principal
of Nishiyama High School who hopes to accompany the students. The relationship with Nishiyama High
School continues to develop and is an integral part of our LOTE program.
DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
On October 8 th the staff professional development day, staff worked on implementation strategies for the Yr 7
Ultrabook program and course development for the Australian curriculum. Ms Fogarty and Ms Moran
presented a session that highlighted the potential to use the Ultrabooks to engage students in their learning
and to enhance assessment and feedback to both parents and students. Mr Constantinou presented a
session that outlined strategies to promote efficient and ergonomically safe use of the machines by the
students as well as the participation of the College in a Cyber Safety program.
Teachers in the Phase 1 Australian Curriculum subjects of English, Mathematics, History and Science used
part of the day to further their work in the preparation of the new curriculum materials in 2013. In Victoria, the
new curriculum will be known as AusVels. Teachers in other faculties used the time to study the “shaping
papers” for the new subjects to be introduced in 2014 and 2015.
Year 11 Examination Dates. This is advance notice that Year 11 Examinations will be held from November
16 to November 22. Following the examinations, the Year 11 students will be engaged in the VCE Unit 3&4
(Year 12, 2013) orientation classes from Monday November 26 to Friday November 30. These are important
and compulsory classes for the girls. The last day for the Year 11 students will be Friday November 30.
Year 10 Examination Dates. The Year 10 Examinations will be held in the week from November 19 to
November 22. Following the examinations, the Year 10 students will be engaged in the VCE Unit 1&2 (Yr 11,
2013) orientation classes from Monday November 26 to Tuesday December 4. These are important and
compulsory classes for the girls. The last day for the Year 10 students will be Wednesday December 5.
Year 12 Trial Examinations
The Year 12 Trial Examinations were held during the September holidays. I congratulate all students who
engaged with the trial exams in such a positive manner. It is good to report that our Academy stuents are
becoming well drilled in VCAA exam procedures. Most students know their VCAA examination number or
realise that they may carry their number on their person and refer to this for each exam. The girls know that
they are NOT allowed to bring mobile phones or bags into the exam room. They understand that they must
carefully read their exam timetable as the VCAA will not accept ‘misreading the exam timetable’ as grounds
for special consideration. Students must give themselves plenty of time to travel to the exams.
VCAA Unit 3&4 Examinations With the VCAA examinations fast approaching, I encourage all VCE Unit 3 &
4 students to stay positive and focused as they work their way through these next weeks. A reminder that past
papers and examiners’ reports can be found on the college intranet and at the VCAA website
(www.vcaa.vic.edu.au).
All students should revisit their copy of the ‘VCE Exams Navigator’ to refresh themselves as to the rules
relating to the examinations. As well, the VCAA have made available the front covers, relevant instructions,
multiple choice answer sheets, miscellaneous formulae etc for 2012 on the VCAA website. To find these, go
to the VCAA home page and select the ‘Latest News’ section. It is essential that all students familiarise
themselves with the instructions and directions contained in these cover sheets.
WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM 2012
We have received very positive feedback from employers and visiting
teachers at the completion of this year’s work experience week.
Students, too, have indicated their appreciation of this wonderful
learning experience.
The ongoing benefits to our students, while perhaps not apparent right
now, will always have an impact on their lives. Some employers have
offered assistance with vocational support and mentoring, whilst others
have offered casual or part time work for our girls. Some students have
learnt with complete certainty that the industry they experienced is
definitely not where they wish to head; others have experienced
absolute confirmation of their future career path.
As always your support as parents and guardians is very much
appreciated.
‘Probably the best student I have had in 30 years’
‘We thoroughly enjoyed having your student with us. She is an excellent
example for other work experience students’
‘Your student will be an asset wherever she works’
‘We highly recommend your student into the medical field’
‘We are happy to have more girls from the Academy’
‘She would be a great asset to the profession’
‘It was a pleasure for the staff and children to have your student working
in our school’
‘This student was a delight to have in our office’
‘Displayed maturity beyond her years’
‘Your student has a natural rapport and understanding of students’
needs – is a very efficient and dedicated person’
‘Your student has a high degree of initiative – is also very inquisitive
and listens to answers to her questions!’ An excellent work experience
student!
‘She always asked questions if she was stuck. Her strength would be
that she is proactive!’
‘It was a pleasure to have your student doing observation with us. We
wish her all the very best and if she requires more assistance with her
career choice we are happy to assist’.
Kiera Wise, current year 10 student wrote the following…
“On 17 th September until 21 st September I participated in work experience week. Mrs Allan used my love of
the outdoors to assist me finding the perfect place; La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary. It was definitely worth waking
up early every day. I gained knowledge that I found surprisingly fascinating and I even enjoyed doing the little
activities around the learning classrooms. I am really interested in making a career in wildlife and the week at
La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary really expanded my knowledge. Work experience gave me an idea of what it’s
like to have a career. “
WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM 2013
The year 9 students have received their information packs for work experience in 2013. Many have already
responded to the challenge of searching for placements. Students have been urged to check industry
application opening and closing dates and to act early in exploring options. Their discussions with
parents/guardians, teachers and others will definitely benefit their ability to start unfolding the broad spectrum
of possibilities. Students have been requested to visit the work experience coordinator by the end of this year
even if they don’t have any idea of where their interest area lies. With your support I’m sure our young women
will avail themselves of an excellent placement by their work experience week during September 16 th to 20 th
2013. Please contact me for further discussion of this program.
Care Monkey and Asthma Australia
CareMonkey is a safe and free web app for sharing health care information. Asthma Australia has partnered with
CareMonkey in order to contribute to the safety and well-being of people with asthma. Parents can create a profile for
their child in CareMonkey which can be shared with trusted carers, including family, friends, teachers and sports coaches.
Vital information such as emergency contacts, health and safety alerts, medications, allergy details, asthma plan and more
can be easily shared.
Consider creating a profile for your child with asthma (or other medical condition) and share this with others including the
staff at your school or preschool.
Go to caremonkey.com for more information.
Holiday and Festival Asthma Trigger Warning
The upcoming holiday season and festivities planned during Term 4 and throughout the summer holidays may mean that
your child is exposed to new triggers for their asthma. It is important for parents and carers, and children themselves, to
be aware of changes to their environment and the activities that may impact on their asthma.
Christmas trees, both real and artificial could be triggers for people with asthma. Artificial trees may be quite dusty after
being stored away, while both real and artificial trees may harbour mould. It is important to ensure that artificial trees
are cleaned appropriately and that care is taken to select real trees that do not produce wind-borne pollen. All tree and
other decorations should cleaned and free from dust and mould when used at home.
Scented candles, room deodorisers and air fresheners may also trigger asthma in those susceptible to perfumes, and care
should be taken when purchasing these and other scented items at home.
Lastly, the added pressures of the year drawing to a close can cause stress and anxiety for many people, potentially
triggering asthma attacks. It is important to consider ways that the whole family can enjoy the holidays and feel safe
happy and comfortable.
Limited Time Left for Year 7& 8’s to Access HPV Vaccine for Free
There are only a few weeks left for girls in Year 7 to start their HPV immunisation course free of charge. Once the school
year is over, these girls will no longer be able to join the free school-based immunisation program, and the three-dose
vaccine will need to be purchased from a GP or other health service provider at a cost of approximately $450 altogether.
The HPV - or human papillomavirus - vaccine has been provided to girls in Year 7 since 2007 as part of the National
Immunisation Program. To get free immunisation in Victoria, girls must commence the course in Year 7 and complete all
doses by the end of Year 8. After that time, any missed dose must be paid for at approximately $150 each.
Ideally all three doses will be given within a 6 month period - 0, 2 and 6 months – however research shows if the second
and third doses are given later than planned, the body still responds to the vaccine and makes antibodies which protect
against HPV infection. This means it is still beneficial to complete the full three-dose course of the vaccine, even if doses
aren't received at the correct intervals.
The HPV vaccine protects against four types of HPV which cause around 70 per cent of cervical cancers. It is important
for all girls to complete the full course to ensure the best possible protection against the disease and other HPV-related
illnesses.
If your daughter has still not started or completed the HPV vaccine course, please contact your local health provider as
soon as possible. Missed doses can be obtained through public council immunisation sessions and your local GP.
If you are unsure if your daughter is fully immunised, contact City of Yarra 92055166 (Year 7 students) or the National
HPV Vaccination Program Register (Year 8 students) on 1800 478 734.
If you need more information, visit www.hpvvaccine.org.au or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.
Catholic students achieve more with less funding
On average, it costs the government 20 per cent less to have a student educated in a Catholic school.
Even with school fees, it still costs less to teach students in a Catholic school.
In a faith-filled environment, Catholic schools instil discipline and have high expectations of their students. Our
school aspires to develop well-rounded learners who achieve their best and who are committed to action for
justice and the common good.
In all areas, a higher percentage of Catholic students have achieved at or above the National Minimum
Standard for the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing, compared to
the Victorian average. Even in our most disadvantaged communities, students in Catholic schools are more
likely to study at university after they finish school.
According to financial data from schools in Australia, Catholic schools also save the Australian taxpayer $2.2
billion each year.
Catholic school funding must keep pace with rising government school costs. Our school cannot afford to
have its funding frozen. Any funding freeze would really be a cut. A funding freeze would be unfair because
our school already saves the government money.
