He studied civil airlineengineering and graduated from theAviation Institute in Kharkiv.Then he worked at the AntonovAircraft Design Centre in Kyiv in thecapacity of an engineer. He had not hadany professional artistic training beforehe started turning out his first cartoons.But later he developed his own uniqueand inimitable style.His debut in the press as a cartoonistwas in 1976, at the age of his twentysix,when his first cartoons apeared inseveral periodicals. Since then havethousands of his cartoons beenpublished in newspapers andmagazines in many countries of theworld. Then he also worked in severalperiodicals (Segodnya, KyivskaPravda…) Currently he is working as afreelance artist.His cartoons have participated inhundreds of International cartooncontests and he won more than 450various awards, among which morethan 100 Grand and First prizes. Hisartworks have been exhibited in somany countries of the world, that itwould be easier to say in which theyhave not been. Individual exhibitions inCuba, France, Germany, Italy, Poland,Russia, Turkey, Ukraine. The bird pulling a gun!.OTHER CASE: I recently received a message from MrTawan Chuntra, he said that the PARAGUACU HUMOURSALOON, from Brazil, had not paid their prize.But then Paraguaçu organizers sent a copy of bankdeposit, which is very easy to do. And that showed they werea serious cartoon contest, which pay the awards.Unfortunately, Mr. Antunes, from world press cartoon, cannot do the same, because he can not send a copy of a depositthat never did.But (ALERT!) he is again calling the naive cartoonists tosubmit cartoons.It is my duty to warn all colleagues: World Press CartoonIS BLACKLISTED. NOT PAID ME MY PRIZE FROM THREEYEARS AGO. Never returns the original drawings, aspromised in its rules. But wpc sell the original artworks. Howthe artists can know if your cartoons were sold?. (Some reports indicate that thelawsuit was initiated on SaturdayDecember 22, 2012, while other reportsindicate that the lawsuit was initiated onSunday.) In the lawsuit, the SecretaryGeneral claims a cartoon, drawn by Doaaand published online by the newspaperAl-Masry Al-Toum, insults the Bible’sAdam, a prophet figure in the Muslimreligion. Shortly after the filing, AttorneyGeneral Talaat Abdallah ordered aninvestigation.Doaa Al Adl is a trailblazer. Doaa is thefirst female editorial cartoonist in the post-Mubarak Egypt to reach the top of thismale dominated profession. Yasser Rizkis the editor-in-chief of the independentnewspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm. NaguibSawiris is a Coptic Christianbusinessman. The Secretary General’slawsuit lists Naguib Sawiris as thepublisher of Al-Masry Al-Youm. At thistime, we cannot definitively confirm this.Media reports do however claim that Mr.Sawiris is a co-owner of the newspaper.Mr. Sawiris is a well-known opponent ofthe Islamists. An outspoken critic of theMuslim Brotherhood, Mr. Sawiris cofoundedthe Free Egyptians (Al-MasryeenAl-Ahrar), a political party that advocatesthe separation of church and state. Inearly January of this year, Sawiris wascharged with showing contempt forreligion for tweeting a cartoon of abearded Mickey Mouse and a veiledMinnie Mouse. The case was eventuallydismissed.Doaa’s cartoon that the SecretaryGeneral deemed insulting, features anEgyptian man with angel wings lecturingAdam and Eve. The three are on a cloudbeneath the infamous apple tree. Theman is telling Adam and Eve that theywould never have been expelled fromheaven if they had simply voted in favorof the draft constitution in the recentEgyptian referendum. Some of thesupporters of the referendum werequoted as saying a “yes vote” guaranteesone a spot in heaven, while a “no vote”guarantees one a spot in hell. NeitherAdam nor Eve in Doaa's cartoon isuttering a word. In short, the cartoon iscritical of Egyptians who have recentlypoliticized religion. It is not critical ofAdam and Eve.While Doaa Al Adl is the first Egyptiancartoonist to be charged with blasphemyunder the new regime, she was not theonly satirist charged this past weekend.Television satirist Bassem Youssef, thehost of the weekly show Al-Bernameg(The Programme), and his network, theCapital Broadcasting Center (CBC), werecharged with insulting President Morsi.The Programme’s show deemedoffensive featured Mr. Youssef holding apillow with a picture of President Morsisurrounded by hearts. Fans of The DailyShow with Jon Stewart may recall Mr.Youssef’s June 21, 2012, appearance onThe Daily Show.When asked for comment CartoonistsRight Network International's ExecutiveDirector Dr. Robert Russell said, "Doaais not the first cartoonist to report freespeech harassment in Egypt. It is ironicthat the person bringing charges in hercase is the head of the National Centerfor Defense of Freedoms under the newregime. Other cartoonists report beingtold that people who hold opinionscontrary to the Salafists are anti-Islamic.This is all consistent with efforts by certainIslamic parties and organizations (sincethe publication of the 12 Danish cartoonsin 2006) to change the United Nationshuman rights policies that currentlyprotect blasphemy, or insult to religion, asfree speech. In Egypt, the Salafists arequickly establishing the rule that anycriticism of the ruling party, of its seniorofficials, or of Islam in any way, will notbe protected free speech under the newconstitution. Wherever we are, we tryto find out what is happening in Turkey and worldwide.What we find out is no rose garden. Poverty, wars...Each year is worse than the one before.How do I came to this conclusion?Through cartoons...Going through the cortoon albums over the years, I couldeven say that a sense of despair comes over me. The world isfull of serious issues as always, discourses of politicians aredepicted in cartoons, same as ever. Cartoons are usuallyassociated with humor and laughter. This is because cartoonistssometimes produce caricatured versions of people; as ifcartoons where a means for laughter.Yet, cartoons are not meant to make us laugh; they provokeone to reflect upon things, they even make one cry. In fact, theyseldom make one laugh. I, personally, believe that cartoonsdisplay observotions of reality with utmost accuracy telling onethe bitterest truth in the simplest way, via simple lines.Don't you think reactions to cartoonist are displaying exactlythis? Politicians are more annayed with cartoonists than theyare with journalists. Because their portrayals by cartoonists areusually ingrained in our minds and each time we look at a photoof a particular politician, we remember the lines making up his/her cartoon.Through lines, the art of cartoons bring forth the artists'responsibilities. Cartoons express a thousand meanings, easilyperceived, with a single stroke of the pen. Life and the world atlarge, unfortunately, do not always present opportunities forlaughter and joy. Life can make us cry, can make us ponder.And naturally all sentiments are reflected in cartoons.As you may notice, I am rather pessimistic writing this prefaceof the annual catalog this year. I cannot possibly look at thestate of the world and carry on being happy. I cannot close myeyes and live in a dream world. Yet, I stili carry my hopes justlike the dawn that comes after each night... I have looked overthe award winning cartoons of many years past Some are stillvivid in my mind.As I read something, as I reflect on an issue, they aredisplayed in my memory like a scene from a movie.In spite of everything, the art of cartoons also makes onelaugh by painting out to transcendent human characteristics aswell as human weaknesses.Beyond these words, there is no need to repeat how importantour cartoon competition is with respect to arts in general aswell as the art of creating cartoons in particular.Such international competitions serve to enhanceinternational relations for Turkey and the Turkish people.Participant artists from the US to Iran, from the Balkans to theMiddle East, from Africa to Europe; in short peoples af a vastgeography get to know each other here. They return to theircountries as our friends. Furthermore, as a reply to the question"Where is the art of cartoons heading?" participants get a chanceto observe each others' works.
