THE DEVIL'S CURVE
KOPECKY, ARNO
Skylight Books – Hotlist Fall 2012
In June 2009, 60 soldiers slipped into the thorn-covered bush above Devil's Curve, a notorious bend in the twolane
highway connecting Peru's northern Amazon to the outside world. The soldiers had orders to dislodge the
3,000 Awajun natives who had been camped at Devil's Curve for the past 57 days. The subsequent clash was
deadly. This blockade formed a crucial link in a series of protests that had shut down transport and industry
across the entire Peruvian Amazon -- the third-largest tract of rainforest on earth, covering more than half the
country. At issue was the lease of three-quarters of the jungle to foreign oil and mining interests over the
previous decade. The Devil's Curve untangles the story behind the deadly stand of the Awajun people -- and the
Canadian gold mine that provoked their drastic action.
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF DARKNESS
BURLEY, ROBERT
Over the past decade, photographer Robert Burley has traveled the world documenting the abandonment and
destruction of film-based photography, namely, the factories where film was produced and the labs that
developed it. Burley's atmospheric large-format photographs transport viewers to rarely seen sites where the
alchemy of the photographic process was practiced over the last century-from the Polaroid plant in Waltham,
Massachusetts to the Kodak-Pathé plant in Chalon-sur-Saône, France, the birthplace in 1827 of photography
itself. As both fine art and documentary, The Disappearance of Darkness is an elegiac reflection on the resilience
of traditional art forms in the digital era and a vital commemoration of a century-old industry that seems to have
disappeared overnight.
