CONSERVATION AND MAKINGCentral to Edward James’s vision of a community brought together by ashared desire to create and conserve was the mix of artists and craftsmanworking alongside one another, sharing ideas and drawing inspiration fromthe artefacts and landscape of West Dean. All Conservation and Makingprogrammes honour this idea by ensuring creativity, making and historicalperspectives are integral to all study.The Conservation programmes train and educate conservators to becomeprofessionals capable of the highest quality of care of historic and artisticartefacts. Practical conservation requires a high level of technical skill alliedwith aesthetic sensitivity, and all programmes teach students to make theobjects that they conserve in order to enhance the understanding. Whilst theMaking programmes largely focus on the practical craftsmanship in creatingfurniture or musical instruments, the future care for the objects is consideredthroughout the making process.12
The common approach to Conservation at West Dean CollegeA statement drawn up by all the Conservation tutors at West Dean CollegeThe activity of those Diploma Programmes at West Dean College thatundertake the treatment of cultural heritage falls within the generaldefinition of Conservation. Conservation includes all measures taken inorder to aid the understanding and interpretation of heritage, throughensuring the material integrity of objects. In its least interventive form,Conservation involves measures taken to stabilise objects by influencingtheir environment and conditions of storage, use or display. At a moreinterventive level it includes practical treatments such as cleaning,consolidation and repair. Where appropriate it can extend to thereplacement of missing parts and visual integration of new components.As such, the processes of preservation, repair, and restoration are all partof the activity of Conservation; either individually or collectively. Theextent to which each is applied will depend on the object being treatedand its context. Treatment decisions are taken after discussion withinterested parties, and it is recognised that conventions within eachsubject area differ to an extent. However the principle common to allProgrammes is that treatments should involve the minimum actionnecessary to ensure the continued and sustainable interpretation of theobject, in its context, as an historic artefact.Across all Conservation and Making programmes, you will enjoy:• working with tutors at the top of their profession• low staff to student ratio (approximately one to seven)• high levels of personal tuition• practical hands-on bench skills and treatments• support from West Dean’s other conservation and making departments• visiting lecturers from public and private institutions• fully equipped studios with dedicated equipment• visits to leading studios and workshops in your disciplineIn addition in all Conservation programmes, you will also have:• access to artefacts of historical importance from the public andprivate sector• theoretical, scientific and analytical study of artefacts and materials• historical research and interpretation of the objects you work on• an understanding of the ethical practice of national and internationalheritage organisations• the skills to write condition and conservation reports, documenting theobjects in your careSome programmes also offer work placements within a museum orcommercial setting.13
