PARTNERSHIPSThe Slade School of Fine ArtOur Visual Arts students benefit from collaborations with local artsorganisations as well as the Slade School of Fine Art in London. West DeanCollege hosts visiting artists on a regular basis, offering periods ofresidency from four to eighteen weeks and a series of student exchangeswith the London-based art school began in 2005.Building on the success of our exchange programme with the Slade,recent collaborative projects have been developed between West DeanCollege and the Royal College of Art in London and University CollegeFalmouth in Cornwall.BADA – The British Antique Dealers’ AssociationConservation Studies students benefit from our close relationship with theBritish Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA). The Association helped setup the first conservation programmes at West Dean and continues toprovide invaluable support and assistance in the form of programmeadvisers, an annual scholarship, work placements and objects on whichstudents can work.University College London, School of ArchaeologyEach year students from UCL’s School of Archaeology carry outinvestigations within the 6,400 acre West Dean Estate, which haseverything from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic flint scatters to the industrialarchaeology of a dismantled railway line. This diversity makes it an ideallocation for their students to gain a grounding in survey skills, excavationmethods and environmental studies including experimental archaeology.The students spend between four-days and two-weeks on the West DeanEstate, deepening their appreciation of ancient technologies and theremains that are produced from different activities. This facilitates agreater understanding of how land occupation and use has changed overthe centuries. The Estate features Bronze Age burial mounds, Iron Ageenclosures and the remains of Roman villas and Medieval churches.48
