Sambuco<strong>IASF</strong>-<strong>Roma</strong> develops an intense public outreach activity, addressing students, teachers, commonpeople, with the aim of spreading the knowledge about astrophysics in general, and of describingthe work of our Institute, its scientific objectives and its achievements.This activity is carried out by organizing and performing conferences, seminars, refresher coursesfor school teachers, exhibitions of scientific material. There are only two people in our Institutecarrying out this work with continuity. The rest of <strong>IASF</strong> personnel contributes in occasion ofrelevant events, compatibly with their research work.The institute, as well as IFSI-<strong>Roma</strong>, is located in the Research Area of Rome- Tor Vergata,together with six Institutes of the National Research Council (CNR). Moreover, the whole region ischaracterized by very high density of scientific Institutions of international relevance: ESA-ESRIN,ENEA, INFN in Frascati, the Astronomical Observatory in Monteporzio, the Second University ofRome.As a natural consequence, most of the public outreach of <strong>IASF</strong>-<strong>Roma</strong> is performed in strictcollaboration with these other scientific institutions, as well as with local administrations andschools of any level.Current activity and some recent eventsResearchers’ night in Frascati on 28 September 2007A public event in the framework of the European Union’s initiative “European researchers’ night2007”, locally promoted by the research Institutions of the area (including <strong>INAF</strong>) with conferences,debates, exhibitions, observation of the sky by portative telescopes, questions and answers toresearchers in various sites of the city, and interactive guided tours in scientific laboratories, withpossible use of research sophisticated instruments, in different scientific topics (particle physics,nanotechnology, energy, astronomy).Darwin: the evolution and beyond. (From the Big Bang to Darwin’s finches).<strong>IASF</strong>-<strong>Roma</strong> promoted and managed a multidisciplinary course about cosmic, geological andbiological evolution, with weekly lessons lasting from January to May 2007, held by highly qualifiedexperts in every discipline such as cosmology, astrophysics, geology, biology, philosophy,informatics. The theoretical lessons, designed as refresher course for teachers of intermediateschool, were also open to common people. The course included visits to museums, botanicalgarden, sites of geological interest etc.The School of Astronomy.<strong>IASF</strong>-<strong>Roma</strong> has scientific responsibility and management of the course of Astronomy held at theESA-ESRIN premises in Frascati, with the organizing support of the Associazione Tuscolana diAstronomia (ATA). This course, structured in four units (stellar evolution, Solar System, Galaxies,cosmology), open to common people, addresses especially school teachers.“Scienzaorienta”This initiative comes from the Second University of Rome and involves all of the researchInstitutions who are present in this area, namely CNR, <strong>INAF</strong>, ENEA, INFN, ESA-ESRIN, as well asrepresentatives of the world of work and business. This yearly event consists of a week ofexhibitions, conferences and meetings held at the University of Tor Vergata, with the aim of guidingstudents in the choice of their future studies.66
