Convention on Biological DiversityPlant Conservation Report Page 16TARGET 3:DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS WITH PROTOCOLS FORPLANT CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE, BASED ONRESEARCH AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCEIntroductionThe aim of this target is to enhance thedevelopment of tools and protocols relevantto all aspects of plant conservation, but withan emphasis on those that have been tested, arebased on research and experience, and optimizedfor use by plant conservation practitioners. Whilethis may focus on optimizing existing tools andadapting them to local needs, improved access tosuch tools is also pivotal to this target.and integrated management of cedar forests(Lebanon), medicinal and useful plants (Nepal),conservation of threatened species (Philippines),propagation and cultivation of South Africanthreatened species (South Africa), special useforests (Viet Nam), economic valuation of forests(Malaysia) and eco-agriculture and sustainabletourism (China). Many international agencies alsohave tools and protocols related to various targetssuch as Bioversity International for Targets 1, 2,8, 9, 13, 14 and 15; Botanic Gardens ConservationSoil erosion in Europe (www.worldmapper.org)ProgressVarious protocols, tools and technologies linkedto the achievement of the Strategy targetshave been highlighted in the national reports.Examples include: tools and technologies for invitro propagation (Algeria), recovery planningand threat abatement (Austria and Australia),translocation of threatened species (Australia),greening using native seed (Australia), propagationand harvesting protocols (Chile), implementationof the ecosystem approach (Germany), speciesaction plans taking into consideration variousnational and international conventions andlegislation (Hungary), designation of ImportantPlant Areas (IPAs) (Belarus, Romania andSlovenia), ex situ and in situ conservation(Colombia, Chile, China, India, Indonesia andIran), forest tree breeding (Japan), GIS-basedconservation models and permanent ecologicalplots (Malawi), sustainable forest managementmodels (Malaysia), and sustainable use modelsin community forest and pro-poor leaseholdforests (Nepal). Other tools and protocolsinclude primordial botanic gardens and grandforest parks (Indonesia), wild relatives projectsInternational for Targets 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 and14; the Food and Agriculture Organization of theUnited Nations for Targets 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14 and15; the Global Invasive Species Programme forTarget 10; IUCN for Targets 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, and16; and Plantlife International for Targets 5 and15.FutureThe Gran Canaria Declarationcalling for aGlobal Program for Plant ConservationThe in-depth review of the GSPC noted thatthe main gap for this target is access to, anddissemination of information on the existingtools and protocols in appropriate formats. It istherefore critical that a means for disseminatingsuch tools and protocols is developed. A usefuloption will be collation of these in the toolkit tobe developed by the CBD Secretariat and as partof both the CBD and GPPC websites.
