The rise of a Profession within a ProfessionPrefaceThe Development of the Architectural Technology Discipline within the Profession of ArchitectureOther companies had gotten used to employing both architects and technologists andwere satisfied with the result of that politic. They said that the technologists had tobecome familiar with their design demands and pay respect to the values embeddedin the architectural concepts before they worked really satisfactorily. Thetechnologists tended to be a little too self confident about their area of specialisationand could be a little stubborn in the beginning, but proved to be good and suitable forthe company in the long run. The architects were not that familiar with thetechnicalities and had to be trained in the area to be able to do that part of the job.I noted that no-one mentioned that the two different educations could be consideredtwo different specialisation areas within architecture and that the work should beshared based on such a consideration. Apparently, all architects tend to equateprofession and education. In 1992 I became the head of Byggeteknisk Højskole educating architecturaltechnologists. I had then become a little preoccupied with the idea, that the area of“the coherent technical design” – the area of architectural technologists – deservedbetter access to further education. There was none and still is no further educationwithin the core area of coherent technical design despite the fact that the area hasbeen growing all the time. I also had the idea, that such a further education wouldserve two reasonable purposes:1. It would raise the quality of architectural design technically, thus improvingthe productivity in the building industry by avoiding a number of mistakesand corrections in projects and in executed buildings.2. It would be an answer to a request for further education among a growingnumber of graduates who did not know how to satisfy their hunger for moreeducation that directly would build on the already achieved knowledge.19
