Die sehrerfolgreiche und populäreFernseh-Soap-Opera „GuteZeiten – Schlechte Zeiten“(GZSZ, RTL) diente dabei alsReferenzmodell. To improve the image ofarchitects in society, acompetition was announcedaiming to strengthen themedia presence of theprofession. The very popularsoap opera “Gute Zeiten– Schlechte Zeiten” (“Goodtimes, bad times””) wasused as a reference. Structure proposal for ageneric daily soap operaabout architecture.(Extracts)Casting: Look-alikes aresought of the actors in Germancommercial television’smost successful soap opera,“Gute Zeiten – SchlechteZeiten“ (“Good times, bad times”, RTL, began in1992) to fill the supportingroles. It is possible that theaudience will identify withsuch successful televisioncharacters.Survey: a television advertisingagency carries out a surveyof the target group (14to 24 years old) to find outwhat objects and furnitureshould be found in a architect’soffice, in the opinionof the respondents. The filmstudio will then be furnishedaccording to the results, inorder to achieve a high levelof public acceptance.Roles in the pilot film: thereare only three main roles:the architect’s wife, the badguy, and the good guy. Thearchitect does not appear, and the role remains unfilled. To improve the imageof architects as a profession,we will operate on thestrategy of absence. This islike in the American detectiveseries “Colombo” (since1971, with interruptions), inwhich Colombo’s wife neverappears, even though heconstantly talks about her.The talk of the absent architectis intended to open upthe watcher’s potential forprojection. This potentialcan be intensified into themystical.Ad breaks: here, advertisementscan be shownfor products and servicesprovided by architects andthe building industry. Badguy and good guy appearin black (=bad) and white(=good) clothing and discussarchitecture during theirjoint appearances. Theyalways end their conversationswith the same sentences.“What you can carryaround with you is not architecture. What you can carryaround with you is, at best, amodel of architecture.”Architects’ Tele Lotto: thedraw takes place at the endof each show. The architect’swife presses a buttonto make a ball roll. Membersof the audience have sentin pictures of their dreamhomes to the producers ofthe program. One house isallocated to each numberfrom 1 to 35. Good guy putsgood architecture next tothe even numbers and badguy gives bad architectureodd numbers. The ball rollsjust once per broadcast. Thehouse of the number theball knocks over is built byan architect chosen by thegood or bad guy; that is thefirst prize in this competition.Consolation prize: ifthe ball doesn’t knock anynumber over, all the contestantsreceive a copy of thebook “Architecture withoutarchitects.”For this draw we will use themachine from Tele Lotto (a30-minute program on EastGerman television, 1972–91),which let one in three ballsrun through.
