PREFACEThis booklet telling the story of Noahand the Ark is taken from the Old Testamentof the Bible, and may be read in GenesisI 6:9-9:17. It ha8 been prepared as part ofthe curriculum of the Advanced Writers'Workshop, held in Lubo, Tanudan ,Kalinga-Apayao, ~uguat 27-September 6, 1984.Thie story of the great flood is retold herefor the enjoyment of readers of LinurubuR alinga.Following the retelling of the story isa second rendering of the story in theullalim or traditional Kalinga songform. An English version of the eame etorybegins on page 25.The illustratione found on the coverand pagee 2 and 6 have been adapted fromthose done by Don Canonge of the SumrerInetitute of Linguistice - Auetralia. ..THE ULLALIMThe ullalim is a Kalinga song form, inwhich the melody is traditional, but thelyrics are usually composed impromptu to fitthe occasion for which it ia sung. Pairs oflines rhyme and considerable freedom may betaken to expand or contract the syllables ofthe words te improve the rhyme. Singers alsouse a special vocabulary which occure onlyin the ullalim. The beauty of an *lira isjudged a=% to the significance ofitsmessage, the cleverness of the choice ofwords and rhyme, and the pleasing manner inwhich it is sung.The ullalim iB sung at informaloccasions to entertain children andcompanions. It is also an important featurein major events such as peacepactcelebrrtione or settlements of disputes inwhich the ullalin is used to make forceful,blunt c o a v which would never beacceptable to etate in ordinary speech.

NOAR AND THE ARRNoah, who lived long ago, was among thefirst people on earth. Be was the only goodperson God saw as he looked down fromheaven. Because the people behaved badlytoward their fellowmen, God said, .I wish Ihadn't made them. All my effort has beenwasted.'One day he spoke to Noah, .Noah, I amgoing to detstroy the world because there aretoo many bad people. You are the only goodperson. So you will Live. Make a boat sothat you can stay there.' When Noah heardthis he started to make it. He went to wheremost of the trees were because that is whathe used to make, the boat. When the peoplesaw him, they kept on laughing at him. Bebecame a laughing stock. They said he mustbe crazy because you can't sail a boat inthe mountains.25

When the boat was finished, Noah calledhis wife, his three sons, Shem, Ham andJapheth, and their wives. He also called allthe animals, both large and small, tame andwild. When they all arrived he shut them upin the boat, then it started to rain andblow very hard. It began in the morning andcontinued throughout the night. The raincame in gusts and the people were concernedbecauee the water kept rising and rising.Some climbed trees, and some fled to themountains, but it overtook them all. Asthey were all trying to swim, they sankunder the water as the flood cowered theplace8 &re they were.Por forty days the rain poured down,and tbe wavea rose and fell,a11 the mountain8 were submerged, theearth was all sea Md nothing could be seenof the land. When all the animals floatingin the water had died, the water began tosubside. In the neventb month the boat cameto--rest on Uount Ararat. When Roah lookedout in the tenth month, the water hadsubsided a lmg way.

"Raven, you go and look,. he 'said. Butthe raven did not return because he was busyeating his fill of what he had found to eat,so he forgot the instructione."Dove, will you please go," . he saidagain. The dove went but it returned becausethere wae no place for it to perch. After aweeK he aent it out a second time. Thistime it brought back a leaf. -Ah, now thereis only a little water,- he said. "Lettswait patiently for another seven days.. Whenthe dove went again, it did not return, solorh knew that the water had subsided. Whenhe opked up the boat, he saw that the earthwe8 sttll wet and he teared that the groundwould Bs vmry soft. .Wait auhile,. hemaid to the anierln vbo were a11 anxioue tohurry out. .

After they waited another twenty-sevendays, the earth was hard enough to bestepped on, so he opened up the boat for theanimals. Noah, and his children andgrandchildren, and all the aninale then wentput of tbe ark so that they could spread outand multi,ply on the _earth. Noah killed aSheep and said, "Here is the sheep which wehave killed as our thanksgiving to you. Weare happy because you saved ue all: God wassatief ied as he saw those who came out ofthe boat. 'Use the animals when you needthem," be said. "And I will place therainbow so that it can be seen, as ouragreement that never again will this happento the earth. Live good lives. What youplant, you can harvest, and I will be herewhen you need me."
