Protecting Human Research ParticipantsHistoryMain Menu | Glossary | HelpHistorical EventsPrevious Page 3 of 7NextNazi Medical War Crimes (1939–1945)Although not the first example of harmful research on unwillinghuman subjects, the experiments conducted by Nazi physiciansduring World War II were unprecedented in their scope and thedegree of harm and suffering to which human beings weresubjected.“Medical experiments” were performed on thousands ofconcentration camp prisoners and included deadly studies andtortures such as injecting people with gasoline and live viruses,immersing people in ice water, and forcing people to ingestpoisons.In December 1946, the War Crimes Tribunal at Nurembergindicted 20 physicians and 3 administrators for their willingparticipation in the systematic torture, mutilation, and killing ofprisoners in experiments. The Nuremberg Military Tribunalsfound that the defendants had:●●Corrupted the ethics of the medical and scientificprofessionsRepeatedly and deliberately violated the rights of thesubjectsThis photograph documented the results of a medicalexperiment that included skin burns caused bydoctors at the Ravensbrueck concentration camp in1943.
