Fastrax Software GPSWhat is Fastrax Software GPS?A traditional GPS receiver consists of an antenna, an RFfront-end and a baseband IC. The baseband IC consistsof an application processor, some memory, anddedicated hardware for communication (UART, SPI) andsignal processing (correlators, acquisition engine). In addition to the traditional GPS receiver describedabove, there are also solutions on the market thatreduce the size and price of the receiver hardware bymoving parts of the software onto the host CPU. In suchapproaches, typically only the acquisition and trackingtasks are running on the GPS baseband IC, and thenavigation algorithms are run on the host CPU. Theseapproaches are usually referred to as measurementfront end receivers.Contrary to a traditional GPS receiver or a measurementfront end, Fastrax Software GPS performs all GPS functionalitiesin software on an already existing CPU withoutthe need of any GPS specific IC. This includes signalcorrelation, - acquisition and – tracking as well as pseudorangecalculations, navigation and final PVT output.FFT Acq Correlator API iCore TM SW Corr20 www.fastraxgps.com

Software GPSBenefits with Fastrax Software GPSCost & FlexibilityCost is significantly reduced as required silicon area isminimized in comparison to any other available GPSsolution.Flexibility is unique with Fastrax Software GPS. By usinglatest available radios with Fastrax Software GPS makesthings really interesting. The receiver supports GPStoday but can be configured to receiver other GNSSsignals in the future as well. A multiband GNSS receivercan thus be implemented with a fraction of the cost ofexisting conventional multiband receivers.Key Features:Lowest cost GPS solutionLowest possible energy/fix required.Easy to optimize and adjust to availableresources and signal availabilitySupport for GPS, Software upgradeableto new GNSS systemsNon real time requirement for signalprocessingLow power consumptionAnother truly unique feature with Fastrax SoftwareGPS is that the power consumption is typically 30mJ/fix, which is equivalent of more than 60.000 fixes froma single coin cell battery. This is achievable as FastraxSoftware GPS receiver needs only to be on as long asthe GNSS signal is received. In urban canyons 100ms istypically enough for good performance and in areas withgood visibility it can be even shorter.Record Breaking SensitivityFastrax Software GPS enables also integration timesfar longer than conventional receivers and thus recordbreaking acquisition sensitivities can be achieved. Thesoftware architecture is also very flexible in terms ofnumber of channels and number of correlator fingersused, which can be adjusted and optimized accordingto application specific requirements. With Fastrax SoftwareGPS it is additionally straightforward to implementmultipath mitigation and to detect and eliminate interferenceof CW (continuous wave) type of signals.Software GPS applicationsSince Fastrax Software GPS receiver is very flexibleand fundamentally different from a conventionalreceiver, some new and exciting applications can beimplemented. A traditional receiver needs to be on continuouslyduring normal operation albeit some receivershave implemented power saving schemes wherethe radio is turned on and off. However, fundamentallya traditional receiver needs continuous operation forreal-time code correlation. This means that a traditionalreceiver must be on for 8s for a warm start and 40s fora cold start, depending on the availability of ephemerisbefore a fix can be calculated. In terms of power consumptionit means anything between 600mJ to 3000mJto get one fix.Fastrax Software GPS on the other hand can easily beused for a Push-to-Fix (P2F) type of solution where theGNSS signal is recorded with a time stamp and storedfor post processing. The radio can be turned off immediatelyafter the signal is captured. A cold start with atraditional low power receiver consumes thus 100 timesmore power than a Cold start using a software P2Fsolution.A P2F type of solution can be used in many applicationswhere real-time navigation is not required. Sometypical examples are low power data loggers and digitalcameras.Available evaluation platformAt the moment Fastrax Software GPS can be demonstratedby using Fastrax IT910 USB stick containingan RF chip, CPU and a 1Gbit NAND Flash memory fordata storage. It includes also a rechargeable Li-Ion batteryand a RTCC for maintaining clock and calendar. The IT910 USB stick can be configured for autonomouslogging at desired logging rates with an easyto use GUI or it can be operated manually by simplypushing a button. The actual positions are finally calculatedautomatically by the PC software once the USBstick is connected to the PC or server.smartpositioning9/201021

TRACK & TRACEHardware andSoftware solutionsTrack&Trace Software SolutionsSoftware for trackingThe standard SW in the uTrace03e includes severalfunctions required in normal tracking applications. It is stable and can be remotely troubleshooted. Thesoftware is easy to customize according to the userapplication.Smart event based reporting logic can be used to drivedown communication cost and excess amounts ofdata to the server:• Start / stop of movement• Traveled distance• Heading change• Geofence or route adherence breach using theadvanced geofencing library• Detection of G-forcesThe event settings can be changed over the air andusing the optional SW development tools new eventscan be created.Advanced featuresThe uTrace03e SW provides advanced geofencingpossibilities: geofences can be circular around a singlepoint, polygons built from multiple points or multiplepoints connected to form a route to provide routeadherence. The system can be updated over-the-airand also troubleshooting can be done remotely. Thetroubleshooting commands are usable through SMSand TCP/HTTP, and with a single command the uTracesoftware will download a new firmware image and verifythe image integrity.Advanced logging systemDifferent events can be logged into an internal event logand later uploaded to an FTP server or extracted witha USB connection. The log is able to store over 20000events. Depending on the amount of logged events, the storage space can hold events for several weeks. The oldest events are automatically erased when thestorage space runs out. Configuring the length of thelog and adding new events can be done by simplemodifications to the source code.Flexible communicationThe most cost effective protocol: SMS, UDP, TCP, canbe easily selected depending on the application type.FTP and HTTP protocols are available for data communicationwith a server.Customisable local user interfaceThe membrane appearance is easily customizable andthe behaviour of the buttons and LED’s can be modifiedfor the particular application.Coming up in 2011…Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and Cell ID location.smartpositioning9/201027
