A middle school teacher for morethan 50 years, he inspired generations of studentsat Chicago public schools and Latin School ofChicago. His very first 6th grade class still invitedhim to outings up until he passed away at the ageof 75.William was a loving father who adored hischildren; Brian, Sheryl, Sheila and Ellen. He wasalways very involved in their lives and passed alongmany passions, including his love for the arts. Hischildren have fond memories shared together atthe ballet, opera and symphony. He also adoredhis grandchildren; Michael, Stephanie, James andParker.Having grown up on a farm, William had adeep love for animals. His beloved cat, Avery, nowlives with his daughter Sheila. When Sheila beganvolunteering for PAWS Chicago several years ago,William became interested in the organization.He started making donations to PAWS in honorof his children’s birthdays and enjoyed hearingupdates about PAWS Chicago’s efforts to help savehomeless pets. He inspired many friends to adoptfrom PAWS, and even decided to donate his car!When William passed away in June, the Burallifamily found it to be a fitting tribute to requestthat donations be made to PAWS Chicago tohonor William’s memory.In Memory ofKeith AbbottConantPhoto by: Jovanka NovakovicKeith Abbott Conant, principal violist forChicago Lyric Opera and Chicago Philharmonic,passed away unexpectedly from a heart attackin the Chicago home he loved and shared withhis partner, Dan Goss. Born on January 18, 1962in Rockville Centre, New York, Keith was 49. Inaddition to being a gifted musician, he was also aloving partner, brother, uncle, son, teacher, and agenerous and true friend to many.Keith studied viola at the Juilliard Schoolof Music, graduating in 1986. He also studiedchamber music with members of the JuilliardString Quartet. Keith began his orchestralcareer with two years in the Seattle SymphonyOrchestra and then joined the Chicago LyricOpera Orchestra in 1987.In addition to his principal position at theLyric, he performed as principal with theChicago Philharmonic and regularly substitutedwith the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and theGrant Park Symphony.Keith was a gifted viola teacher, loved andadmired by his many students. He gave privatelessons, was on the faculty at Roosevelt andValparaiso universities and coached professionalmusicians and aspiring professionals forauditions.Keith was the must-have musician for allConant family funerals and weddings. Hisinterests outside of music included entertainingfriends and overseeing house renovations. Heenjoyed taking his dog Lucky for walks, a Terriermix he and Dan adopted from PAWS Chicagothree years ago. They also have a cat, Phoenix.Because of their love of animals, Dan asked fordonations to be made in Keith’s memory tosupport PAWS Chicago’s dedication to helpinganimals.Keith’s passing is a devastating loss to hisfamily, friends, and Chicago’s music community.His kindness and generosity are known to many.He was always ready with a big smile, a warmhug, and an infectious laugh.45
