Genarro also stated that he saw defendant take marijuanafrom “weed trays” in the house and smoke it as early as age 11.According to Genarro, Pasarro’s family also gave the children alcoholto drink at family parties, and that defendant started drinking when hewas approximately 12 years old. Genarro testified that defendantnever really lived at home again after he started drinking. Instead, hewould find cars to sleep in at night, and sometimes he would be foundand arrested.On cross-examination, Genarro acknowledged that he andAntoinette had both attended college and were working to supportthemselves. He also explained that he had never spoken to defendantabout his crimes.Mitigation SpecialistDefendant also presented the testimony of Mary DeSloover, anattorney with the public defender’s office who prepared a socialhistory of defendant. DeSloover presented several reports andevaluations performed by professionals defendant had seen. First, shetestified that she received a report from the Dakotah Project, a familyservice treatment program to which defendant was referred in 1990by his juvenile probation officer. The Dakotah report indicated thatdefendant had several pending legal problems, which it attributed todefendant’s drug abuse. The report also indicated that drugs,including cocaine and marijuana, were being used in defendant’shome by his mother’s boyfriend. According to the report, which wascreated based on interviews with defendant and his mother,defendant’s mother’s boyfriend was abusive toward him. The reportspecifically indicated that slapping and hitting were used forpunishment, and that defendant had spent most of one summer lockedin his room for bad grades. The report also included someinformation about defendant’s biological father. According to thereport, defendant’s mother claimed that she left defendant’s fatherbecause he was “worshiping the devil.” Defendant himself indicatedthat his father had discussed his father’s belief in “devil worship”with defendant. Specifically, defendant’s father told defendant that hehad sold defendant’s soul to the devil.-24-
