Petroleum GeosciencesDr. Thomas SteuberDepartment ChairThe Petroleum Geosciences Program at the Petroleum Institute is designedto give students a rigorous education in the fundamentals of geologyand geophysics with specific training in applications of geosciencesin the oil and gas industries. The program features several field trips anda summer field geology course. The Program leads to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Geosciences.Advanced studies leading to the Master of Science Degree beganin spring 2010.Students, who successfully complete the Bachelor of Science Program, will be able to enter the petroleum industry as petroleum geologists orpetroleum geophysicists and have a solid educational base if they decideto continue with their graduate studies. The degree program begins the second year with courses in geologicaland geophysical sciences. Higher level courses include Geology of theMiddle East, Earth Materials (mineralogy) and courses with studentsstudying Petroleum Engineering, including economics. The programcontinues with advanced courses in Structural Interpretation, Petrology,Petroleum Geophysics, Geostatistics, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy,Rock Properties, Petrophysics, Environmental Geology and ReflectionSeismology. A key component of the program is student’s access toadvanced laboratories, including computer laboratories where the reservoirscan be studied in three dimension using reflection seismic andother data in a virtual reality format. This greatly facilitates the understandingof the complexities of reservoir stratigraphy and relationshipsbetween reservoir geology and petroleum production. Project courseson Reservoir Characterization and Petroleum Systems, which typicallyinclude the study of problems utilizing real data from UAE reservoirs, are offered in the final semester.FacultyProfessorIhsan Al AasmSadoon Morad, ADOC ChairThomas SteuberAssociate ProfessorMohammed AliAssistant ProfessorYoucef BouzidiFlavia FioriniStephen LokierSandra VegaSixth Annual Commencement - Class of 201120book-ENGV2-1.indd 201/8/2012 3:06:15 PM
