<strong>The</strong> Gonfalon<strong>The</strong> gonfalon, a banner suspended from a crosspiece orframe, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as anensign of states or princes. Gonfalons have been adoptedin many universities around the world as part of collegeor institutional insignia, and they are used in academicprocessions to identify colleges and schools within theuniversity. Student marshals carry the gonfalons and at the<strong>Petroleum</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, large ones represent the five degreeawardingprograms and the graduate program. Smaller ensignsrepresent previous graduating classes.<strong>The</strong> Class Ring<strong>The</strong> class ring is normally worn by senior college studentsand alumni to commemorate their graduation. <strong>The</strong> traditionof the class ring originated at the United States MilitaryAcademy at West Point in 1835. Since then, numeroushigh schools, colleges and universities have adoptedthis practice and designed unique class rings for theirown alumni.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Petroleum</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s class ring features the <strong>Institute</strong>’slogo on the face of the ring with the degree awarded (BSc,MEng, MSc) and year of graduation inscribed on eitherside of the ring. Female graduates’ rings have an oval facewhile male graduates’ rings have a square face.
