Academic RegaliaThe present day academic ceremonial dress worn by facultyand graduates at Commencement ceremonies is basedupon clothing worn nearly eight hundred years ago in Englishuniversities, particularly at Oxford and Cambridge.The tradition was brought to the United States during colonialdays, and led to the development of American AcademicRegalia.By the twentieth century, institutions of higher learning inthe United States had adopted a well-defined code of academicattire, identifying different academic degrees withdistinctive gowns, caps and colors, some of which are nowin use at the Petroleum Institute.The Baccalaureate gown is worn closed and is identified bylong, pleated front panels and long, pointed sleeves.Faculty may choose to wear the attire of the academic institutionfrom which they received their highest degree.In lieu of academic regalia, the Petroleum Institute’s UAEfaculty may wear National Dress.The cap is adorned with a tassel, which is black if the wearerhas earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, and gold ifthe wearer has earned a Doctorate or is a governing officerof an educational institution. A small medal displaying theclass year may also be attached to the tassel.With the increase in the number of educational institutionsand the development of new subject-matter fields,the American Council on Education adopts specific colorsto denote different degrees. The Petroleum Institute graduateswear orange for engineering, and gold for sciences.The Master’s gown has very long sleeves which areclosed at the end, with an opening for the wearer’s armsat midpoint.Students graduating with “honor with distinction” weara long wide gold cord with tassels, while those graduatingwith “honor” wear a similar cord in silver.Doctoral gowns may be worn open, and they are distinguishedby velvet panels, which may be black or in thecolor that designates the wearer’s discipline.These regalia were first adopted at the Petroleum Instituteby the Class of 2011.Sixth Annual Commencement - Class of 201122book-ENGV2-1.indd 221/8/2012 3:06:15 PM
The GonfalonThe gonfalon, a banner suspended from a crosspiece orframe, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as anensign of states or princes. Gonfalons have been adoptedin many universities around the world as part of collegeor institutional insignia, and they are used in academicprocessions to identify colleges and schools within theuniversity. Student marshals carry the gonfalons and at thePetroleum Institute, large ones represent the five degreeawardingprograms and the graduate program. Smaller ensignsrepresent previous graduating classes.The Class RingThe class ring is normally worn by senior college studentsand alumni to commemorate their graduation. The traditionof the class ring originated at the United States MilitaryAcademy at West Point in 1835. Since then, numeroushigh schools, colleges and universities have adoptedthis practice and designed unique class rings for theirown alumni.The Petroleum Institute’s class ring features the Institute’slogo on the face of the ring with the degree awarded (BSc,MEng, MSc) and year of graduation inscribed on eitherside of the ring. Female graduates’ rings have an oval facewhile male graduates’ rings have a square face.
