YOUNG PEOPLEThis article is part of a series which aims to breakdown whatOn The Edge means and how we work with young people inour communities. On The Edge of...your seatOn The Edge believes in providing good quality youthwork - which can be delivered in a number of ways asthe next couple of articles will begin to explain.Recently, OTE has been focusing some of its work onpositive experiences for young people. We want tooffer a large number of activities in which they can getinvolved and develop with the support of Wez and thevolunteers. ‘On The Edge of...Your Seat’ was the name agroup of young people came up with to cover a widerange of media and production based activities, the firstof these being The Messy Podcasts.A small group of older young people wanted to startproducing a range of podcasts for people to see on theinternet. A podcast is a short, radio-like recording, often based around a topic or discussion. Sometimesgroups video-record them, which can make them moreaccessible. Our group plans each episode and then hostsit themselves distributing different segments among thegroup. It is a fantastic opportunity for young people toget to grips with the technology, although this is one ofmany creative outlets which will only appeal to someyoung people. Through The Messy Podcasts, OTE haveseen how the group has developed and grown and hopethat this will continue within the younger groups comingup where we will see opportunities for peer-basedteaching around media production. The podcasts can befound at: www.youtube.com/user/otechagford/videos .Another opportunity for OTE, which happens everysummer and involves a lot of singing and dancing, is theStarling Arts production which we support with theutmost enthusiasm. It is such an important time forthese young people, as well as a lot of fun, and webelieve that it is crucial to support them in whateverthey choose to get involved in, walk alongside them andhelp them when they get stuck. These summer schools, although designed to be fun, are also about developingself confidence, performance skills and learning to workhard with like minded people towards a common goaland ultimately achieve it. We can safely say that for thelast four years, this goal has been reached!Yet another activity we are keen to continue is the filmnight discussion groups. These evenings differ from theother groups we run as they have more of an overtlyChristian theme. We are keen for young people toexplore what faith means to them, but on their terms. The film nights are optional, as are all of our groups andyoung people can choose to opt in or out of thediscussion. The focus of the film nights is aroundfellowship. For us, it is in front of a film with some pizzaand chips. Afterwards we sit and discuss the film, whatthemes we saw that could link to the Bible and thecharacters’ different traits. Designed to be relaxed andnon-threatening, we have seen some young peoplereally interact with the discussions who hopefully wentaway at the end still thinking about how it hadchallenged them and what they value.SessionsThe Mess – please check the OTE website and thewindow for up to date session times:In Drewsteignton – October 7 th and 21 st andNovember 5 th (Sticklepath fire show trip) and 18 th .Each session runs from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the villagehall. Hope to see you there.Whiddon Down - October 7 th and 21 st andNovember 5 th (Sticklepath fire show trip) and 18 th .Each session runs from 4-6pm at the Village Hall. Hopeto see you there.SleepoverOver the summer OTE ran a sleepover event inDrewsteignton Church with a barbecue, food and a film.Lots of young people came to enjoy the evening and weraised £123 for the project.
