It’s autumn <strong>and</strong> it’s raininghard, <strong>and</strong> when one of them gets too clo<strong>se</strong> to the edgeabove a raging torrent, the ground gives way <strong>and</strong> thewoman falls. She manages to save her<strong>se</strong>lf, but she<strong>and</strong> her friend make a macabre discovery: the h<strong>and</strong>of a skeleton is protruding from the river bank.The local police arrive at the scene <strong>and</strong> start digging<strong>and</strong> find that there is more than one body buried in theground. When the area is fully excavated six bodies havebeen found; four adults <strong>and</strong> two children. The Crime InvestigationDepartment (CID) is called in, <strong>and</strong> SebastianBergman travels to Jämtl<strong>and</strong> along with the rest of theteam.It is quickly established that the six were buried at thesame time, but only two of the bodies can be easily identifiedas a Dutch couple who were reported missing in November2003. The others remain a mystery – their DNAprove that they are a family, but no family had been reportedmissing that autumn. Another mystery is the caraccident in the area the same week that the Dutch coupledisappeared. The body of a woman had been found in abrunt-out rental car, but the American name in whichthe car had been registered leads nowhere. A lot of thingsdon’t quite add up.In the mean time, a television journalist is investigatinga so-called asylum deviation; according to authorities twomale Afghan refugees went underground in summer of2003. Shibeka, wife to one of the men, refu<strong>se</strong>s to believethat her husb<strong>and</strong> would leave his family voluntarily <strong>and</strong>the journalist she has contacted suspects that there mightbe a real, big story to detect.In Fjällgraven we follow profiler <strong>and</strong> psychologist SebastianBergman <strong>and</strong> his colleagues in the CID team again, <strong>and</strong>get even clo<strong>se</strong>r to them than we have before.
