Plus, they lost startingpoint guard Kirk Hinrich tofouls with 3:38 remaining. But they made more clutchplays down the stretch to pull outa game they never led until the finalperiod.“For us, it’s big,” Robinson said.“Kirk fouled out. The community does not want tocreate more land from this contaminatedsludge adjacent to one of the most heavilyused recreation areas in New York City.”The petition goes on to say that children, residents of the Red Hook Houses, local athletes who use the ballfields, foodvendors and others would be at risk. The idea was proposed by JohnQuadrozzi, a concrete manufacturer andowner of the Gowanus Bay Terminal on ColumbiaStreet (the aforementioned Red Hooksite), last year. The sludge would be “de-watered,” mixed into concrete, then dumpedinto the Gowanus Bay. This would createmore land and extend the terminal into deeperwaters, according to published reports.John Quadrozzi Jr., emailing the Eagle, said, “Firstly to clarify, the EPA is not lookingto do this with ALL the canal’s dredgematerial, more specifically NOT the medium-to severely contaminated material, butrather only the Red Hook portion of the canal, south of Hamilton Avenue, that withthe low-level contaminates.”Quadrozzi called the plan “a fantasticand responsible project, beneficially reusingremediated/recycled dredge (what whichplagued the neighborhood for over 100 years),for a maritime economic development use.”John McGettrick, head of the Red HookCivic Association, said he shared the goalsof the “No Toxic Red Hook” group. He addedthat the option put forth by Quadrozziwas only one of seven or eight being consideredby the Environmental Protection Agency, which is supervising the remediation ofthe Gowanus Canal as a Superfund site.He stressed that the terminal is notonly near the ballfield, it is also near aschool and the IKEA parking lot.A more likely scenario, he said, is thatthe sludge, or at least some of it, wouldbe barged out through the canal, then putBorough President Marty Markowitz, seen making a speech when Barclays Center was still under construction, will deliver his final State of the Borough Address at Barclays Center next Thursday.AP photo by Kathy WillinsBy Mary FrostBrooklyn Daily EagleAfter 12 years as Brooklyn’s quintessentialadvocate, Brooklyn Borough President MartyMarkowitz will deliver his final State of theBorough Address at an invitation-only eventat Barclays Center next Thursday, April 11.While BP Markowitz will surely highlighthis many accomplishments as boroughpresident during a time when Brooklyn hasboomed, expectations are running high thathis final State of the Borough speech will alsofeature a show-stopper or two.In past addresses Markowitz – never thewall-flower – has pranced with feather-wearingWest Indian dancers, peddled to the podium ona giant tricycle, eaten tons of cheesecake andcaused shock waves by featuring a pole dancergyrating in 5-inch heels on a stripper pole. The annual spectacle also spotlights whathe calls “Brooklyn characters.”Past characters have included the nationaltexting champion, opera singers, a moonwalkingsix-year-old Michael Jackson impersonator,Coney Island burlesque queens, anda memorable Mr. Universe, who took off hisshirt and strutted his stuff. This year’s scheduled guests include manynotable Brooklynites: Cat Greenleaf of NBCNewYork’sTalk Stoop, Tony Danza, Miss America2013 Mallory Hagan, Adam Richman of the TravelChannel’s “Man vs. Food” and performancesby the Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn TabernacleChoir and singer/songwriter Jay Black.Beyond that, Markowitz-watchers willjust have to wait to see what happens. “Therewill be elements that will be certainly humorous,”Markowitz spokesman John Hilltold the Brooklyn Eagle on Friday. He added,“We’re going for the element of surprise.”“There’s definitely going to be some goodstuff,” he said. “He’s definitely going to go outwith a bang.”Among the highlights of Markowitz’ tenureas borough president were the developmentof Barclays Center, the coming of chainstores to the Fulton Mall, the building of newresidential developments in and near DowntownBrooklyn, and the deal to create a newtechnological school in the old Transit Authoritybuilding at 370 Jay St.Marty to go quietly? Of all the methods of disposingof toxic waste, he adds, the only onethat completely destroys it is incineration –not a popular alternative in today’s world.April 8, 2013 • Brooklyn Daily Eagle • 3

Review and CommentWhen Did ‘Sex’Become ‘Gender’?By Ruth WalkerChristian Science MonitorIt’s interesting how browsing the Web has come to the random-accessaspect of foraging through a newspaper. And so it was, dear reader, as I was trying to catch up on Web coverageof President Obama’s Middle East trip or some other worthy topic the otherday when I ran across “Pink or Blue, It’s All Oversharing: Trendy Parents-To-Be Hold ‘Gender Reveal’ Parties,” a commentary from Sharon Brody ofWBUR in Boston. The idea is that the prospective parents hold a party at which they findout, at the same time as their guests, whether they have a little girl or a littleboy on the way. There are variations on the theme here. But in what seems the simplestapproach, the parents instruct their ultrasound technician to communicate(by sealed envelope!) knowledge of their child’s sex not with them but witha bakery, which will then bake a cake that, under a protective coat of whiteor other non-gender-specific frosting, is either pink or blue.At the party, the parents cut the cake, and the pink or blue is visible.Ms. Brody’s piece included a video clip in which a prospective fatherslices away a corner of a cake to reveal a deep pink, and then falls, in tears, into the arms of the mother-to-be.Let’s trust the tears were of joy or relief; it’s hard to tell for sure from the video. Not everyone is convinced that the “gender reveal” party is a forwardstep for civilization.Emily Yoffe of Slate, aka “Dear Prudence,” has vented about “the amazingdevelopment of the awful gender-reveal party.” Brody herself has clearlyworked up a head of steam on this one.But there’s a language issue here, too. As Brody puts it, “[W]hile I’m in theneighborhood, the party also lives next door to Sloppy Vocabulary Lane. Becausewhat we actually are revealing here is sex. Not gender, but sex. Biologicaland physiological characteristics, not a social construct. Sorry, but someof us are picky that way even if you are too squeamish to have a Sex Party.”When did “sex” become “gender”? Even in the days when people hesitatedto speak of the “legs” of a piano, they used phrases like “the fairer sex”or “sterner sex.” Over time, though, sex came to refer to an activity, ratherthan a set of characteristics. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces thismeaning back to D.H. Lawrence, in 1929.As so often happens, a newer meaning drives an older meaning out ofcirculation. Eventually there may come a tipping point, which is then reflectedin formal or legal language.Jeffrey Toobin casts some light on this point in his recent New Yorkerprofile of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, today an associate justice of the US SupremeCourt but, earlier in her career, an important litigant for women’srights. And it seems Ms. Ginsburg’s secretary, who typed up her legal briefsfor her, deserves some credit for a shift in public discourse.Mr. Toobin quotes Ginsburg: “I was doing all these sex-discriminationcases, and my secretary said, ‘I look at these pages and all I see is sex, sex, sex. The judges are men, and when they read that they’re not going to bethinking about what you want them to think about.’ “From that point on, Toobin writes, Ginsburg changed her claim to “genderdiscrimination.”Is published daily except Saturdays, Sundays andFederal Holidays by Everything Brooklyn Media, LLC(USPS 971380), located at 16 Court Street, Suite 1208,Brooklyn, NY 11241. Book Beat“GypsyBrooklynite’s New Novel ExploresComplexities of Open AdoptionBy Samantha SamelBrooklyn Daily EagleAward-winning author Jennifer Gilmorewill soon release “The Mothers” (Scribner; onsaleApril 9, 2013) – a poignant novel that followsone couple’s complex journey to becomingparents. After years of heartbreakingfailure to conceive, the couple finally decidesto pursue domestic open adoption. Havinggone through the open adoption process herself,Gilmore brings to her novel a rawness andsensitivity that will resonate with her readers, whether or not they themselves are parents.Gilmore’s characters Jesse and Ramonencounter a slew of complicated circumstancesand characters in their attemptsto become parents. As they gather advicefrom other couples at training sessionsand through family and friends, Jesse andRamon are constantly reminded that theirquest is a difficult one.Open adoption – which allows birthmothersto maintain a relationship withtheir child and the adoptive parents – is acontroversial practice, yet Gilmore’s ownexperience allows her to approach the subjectwith an informed perspective. She depictsJesse’s and Ramon’s pain with delicatehonesty, capturing moments that test thecouple’s patience and even their marriage.Despite the heaviness of her subject matter,Gilmore manages to integrate somecomic relief into the story; “The Mothers”is at once a charming and emotional read.Gilmore will appear at BookCourt inCobble Hill on Tuesday, April 9, for a reading, audience Q&A, and book signing. Incelebration of the book’s release, BrooklynEagle spoke to the author about the makingof “The Mothers.” She shares with usthe most difficult aspect of writing thisbook and offers a preview of what she’sworking on now.Was it difficult to separate your ownexperience from the one you created foryour characters? That part was easy—I chose to write anovel, as opposed to a memoir, so I could givethese characters new experiences, emotions, reactions. The seed of the story—that a coupleis struggling to have children—this is truth. And my husband and I did have a very difficultadoption journey. But my reactions to this situationand my protagonist’s reactions divergequite a bit. I am pretty hard on her.Did you have any hesitations aboutwriting about this sensitive subject? The hardest part was allowing myselfto write a book that was so much about awoman’s preoccupations rather than a bigsocial novel. It was ridiculous and dismissiveof women’s concerns, of my own concerns, and I had to overcome that to realizethese issues of wanting to be parents, andof the way that looks in our culture, arebroad and important issues in our culture. How has your family reacted to this work?Brooklyn writer Jennifer Gilmore will appearat BookCourt on Tuesday, April 9, to celebratethe release of her novel “The Mothers.”Photo by Amanda MarsalisMy family has been dealing with me as anovelist for a long time. They know the drill. With this book, my husband has been particularlysupportive. He has said that I havetaken this horrible thing that was happeningto us and made something creative out of it,and that has been a valuable reaction for me.Where in Brooklyn do you live andwhen did you move there?I live in Carroll Gardens. I moved herein 1997 when you couldn’t even make aphotocopy. Apparently that was importantto me then. Now, of course, there arerestaurants and boutiques and a farmer’smarket, though it is still difficult to make aphotocopy. It is getting so expensive I fearwe will have to leave soon.Where do you like to write?Until recently I had a dog and for that reasonI liked to write at home. I loved her undermy desk, another heartbeat. But I needa discrete room to write in and I don’t havethat right now. I’ve been trying to work at thelibrary, but that has its own strange distractions. In general I like to write where I amnot near other humans and it is very quiet. What are you reading now?I teach and so I am reading a lot ofmy students’ work. I just finished MegWolitzer’s novel, “The Interestings,” whichI loved. I want to read Fiona Maazel’s“Woke Up Lonely” as soon as I can.Are you working on a new novel?I have been in and out of a new bookthat takes place in Greece. I have spenta good deal of time there because myspouse’s mother lives on an island in theCyclades. It seems like paradise as I writethis, and it is beautiful, but there is a lot offodder for a novel there, big time.* * *Jennifer Gilmore is the author of two novels,“Golden Country,” a 2006 New York TimesNotable Book and finalist for the Los AngelesTimes Book Prize and the National JewishBook Award, and “Something Red,” a New YorkTimes Notable Book of 2010. The firstEaster-time rock‘n’roll extravaganza wason April 8, 1955. As a Dee-Jay on radio stationWINS, Freed ran into a heap of troublein 1960 when he admitted to receivingpayola from record companies.Downtown Brooklyn RocksOn April 8, 1955, what became an annual Easter season eventstarted at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, at Flatbush &DeKalb in Downtown Brooklyn. It’s large and ornate stage, which had featured the likes of Frank Sinatra, Liberace, RudyVallee, Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, Eddie Cantor, GeorgeJessel, and Mae West, gave way to Alan Freed’s Easter Rock‘n’ Roll extravaganza. Now it was the likes of Little Richard,Chubby Checker, The Drifters, Bill Haley and his Comets,Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Cadillacs, the Shirellesand LaVern Baker who took the spotlight. Before Manhattan’sFillmore East’s rock shows, there was the Brooklyn Paramount. The first 1955 Easter show headlined the Penguinssinging “Earth Angel.” Teenagers were dancing in the aisles. On the screen was The Americano starring Glenn Ford withBrooklyn-born Abbe Lane having a part in the film.Alan Freed was a popular Manhattan disc jockey spinningthe top-forty best-selling records over radio station WINS.Freed claimed that he started the term “rock-and-roll.” TheNew York Daily Mirror claimed 90,000 teenagers a week “jamthe Brooklyn Paramount” for one of Freed’s shows.Following the 1957 Paramount Easter extravaganza a psychologistwho saw the show warned that the music could induce“medieval types of spontaneous lunacy,” even “pre-historicrhythmic trances.” But a 13-year-old fan begged to differ. She called Freed “the mostest.”The opening of the huge movie palace on November 24,1928, was hailed as one of the great events in the history of thefilm industry. After 34-years the final curtain was lowered atthe theatre on August 22, 1962 with a mere 300 patrons occupyingthe 4400 seats. Today the vast auditorium is a part ofLong Island University and is named the Arnold and MarieSchwartz Memorial Gymnasium. The mighty Wurlitzer TheatreOrgan still plays for special concerts, basketball games andother events. Remnants of magnificence can still be seen in theproscenium, the ceiling and the side alcoves. The grand lobby, patterned after the famous Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, is nowa student cafeteria. In 1959 Congress investigated radio “payola” — cash andgifts that record companies paid disc jockeys to play theirsongs. That practice was as old as radio itself, but it was illegalas a form of bribery, a misdemeanor, and for good reason.A big-city dee-jay with a faithful audience could make orbreak a record. In the rock‘n’ roll era, as independent labelsstruggled to break the majors’ stronghold on the business, payolahad become more common than ever. Some 200 radio employeesaround the country eventually admitted guilt. Amongthem was Alan Freed. He was hounded out of the industry, andcharged with tax evasion on May 19, 1960. He died in povertyat age 43.On April 8, 1730, members ofShearith Israel, the first Jewishcongregation to be organized inAmerica, consecrated their synagogueon Mill Street in Manhattan. It remained in continuous usefor almost a century. Shearith Israelwas formed in 1654 by asmall group of Shephardim fromRecife, Brazil, seeking refugefrom the Inquisition. They wereoriginally denied permission byboth the Dutch and British to builda house of worship. Legal impedimentswere gradually removed, enabling them to build their firstsynagogue in 1729.For many years Shearith Israelwas the most important institutionin the Jewish community. It supervisedthe preparation of kosherfood, educated Jewish children, provided charity for the poor, adjudicatedinternal disputes, and supervisedall Jewish marriages andburials. It ceased to be the city’sonly synagogue in 1825, whenseveral Ashkenazim seceded toform B’nai Jeshurun after becomingdisgruntled by what they consideredan undemocratic systemfor distributing communal honors. This schism inspired the formationof 27 other congregations beforethe Civil War.By 1833 the city’s Jewish populationhad grown and movednorthward, and the synagoguemoved to Crosby Street and laterto 19th Street. In 1897 it went furthernorth to Central Park West &70th Street.Designed by Arnold Brunner, thenew building was said to be inspiredby Greco-Roman synagoguesdiscovered in the Mediterraneanbasin during the late 19thcentury.It remains a vital center of Jewishreligious life to this day.Patricia Arquette, actress (Lost Highway, Flirtingwith Disaster), born in Chicago, ILGary Edmund Carter, sportscaster, former baseballplayer, born in Culver City, CAMark Gregory Clayton, former football player, bornin Indianapolis, IN,Shecky Greene, comedian, actor, born in Chicago, ILBirthdays — April 8John J.
