Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 

19, 1870, ran an article, titled 

“Changes of a Decade,” 

about how the area west of 

Prospect Park had improved 

during the previous 10 years. 

“Just yesterday,” the Eagle 

said, the area was a “dense 

forest” interrupted by small 

farms with Revolutionary Warera 

houses and grist mills. 

Since that time, the article continued, 

thousands of dwellings 

had been constructed, from 

wooden-frame houses to workshops. 

Streets had been laid 

out with underground water 

pipes, sewers and gas lines.

SUNY Says It’s a `False Rumor’

(LICH) doctors say they 

were told by SUNY Downstate 

administrators to transfer 

all their patients out by 

Friday so that LICH could be 

shut down by Sunday. 

Dr. Alice Garner, head of 

the neonatal unit at LICH, said 

“I received verbal orders that 

we are to transfer all patients 

by tomorrow so they can shut 

us down by Sunday. We did 

not receive one written word 

to substantiate this. We were 

told the surgical areas and the 

G.I. suite will be closed tomorrow 

in direct violation of the 

restraining order, putting the 

community at risk.” 

Hundreds of protesters 

shouting “Shame on SUNY!” 

gathered in the 97-degree 

heat outside LICH in Cobble 

Hill Thursday afternoon after 

getting the word. 

As dozens of cars honked 

their horns in solidarity, state 

Sen. Daniel Squadron, Councilman 

Steve Levin, Public Advocate 

Bill de Blasio and Councilman 

Brad Lander told the 

crowd that SUNY officials refused 

to meet with them or 

put the orders in writing to 

avoid legal culpability. 

“They’re acting like thieves 

in the night,” said de Blasio.

needs in violation of 

a court order. We’re not standing 

for it. SUNY is violating the 

law and the public trust.” 

All four officials headed 

into LICH to attempt to meet 

with hospital administrators, 

while security guards tried 

to block their way. The officials 

and a handful of nurses 

and staff made it to the 

administration floor, where 

they asked to speak to interim 

CEO James Karkenny. 

Karkenny, however, ordered 

them to leave and threatened 

to call the police. Sen. 

Squadron said, “You refuse to 

speak to elected officials” 

“You’ve been asked to 

leave,” Karkenny barked. 

“You barged in illegally!” 

Councilman Lander replied, 

“You’re closing the hospital 

illegally.” 

Karkenny then locked 

himself inside his office and 

refused to come out. 

While barricaded on the 

fourth floor, Sen. Squadron 

called Carl McCall, head of 

the SUNY Board of Trustees, 

explaining that Karkenny “refused 

to have a private conversation” 

with elected officials. 

“People need to understand 

a public health emergency 

is playing out in Brooklyn, 

and it is SUNY’s fault,” said 

an exasperated Councilman 

Levin. “Placing the ambulances 

on diversion at LICH has 

overwhelmed other hospitals 

in the area. They are putting 

real people’s lives at risk. It’s abhorrent 

and inexcusable.” 

Lander said he brought 

his son to LICH when he 

has bronchiolitis. “He had 

to spend a couple of days in 

the hospital. Where did we 

take him LICH. What happens 

tomorrow if a child in 

Red Hook gets bronchiolitis 

Or if someone in Brooklyn 

Heights goes into cardiac arrest 

People are going to die.” 

Levin said that what 

SUNY is saying directy contradicts 

what the staff was 

told. “In our experience, the 

staff, doctors and nurses are 

telling the truth. SUNY refused 

to meet with us today.” 

De Blasio said that he expected 

a “bait and switch” 

with SUNY. “They must tell 

us the full truth about what 

their intentions are.” 

As Thursday’s drama 

played out,1 statements from 

representatives across Brooklyn, 

Borough President Marty 

Markowitz and City Council 

Speaker Christine Quinn 

came in support of LICH, saying 

SUNY has “gone rogue” 

and calling for an independent 

overseer. 

SUNY Downstate spokesperson 

Robert J. Bellafiore issued 

a statement late Thursday 

that SUNY was not closing 

the hospital this weekend. 

“Patently false statements 

and rumors about the 

immediate closure of LICH 

obfuscate the truth, which 

is SUNY’s commitment to securing 

proposals to provide 

healthcare services in the 

community. While SUNY has 

made it clear that it will not 

continue to operate LICH, as 

is reflected in the state-approved 

sustainability plan 

for Downstate, the hospital 

is not closing this weekend. 

No hospital in New York 

state can close without the 

approval of the Department 

of Health.” 

LICH Dr. John Manny confirmed, 

however, that LICH’s 

operating rooms were closing 

Friday, “at the end of shift.” 

Return of Downtown-Bay Ridge 

Bus Isn’t a Done Deal, Pols Warn

corks just yet. The restoration 

of the B37 bus line is 

not a done deal, according to 

two Republican lawmakers 

who warned riders not to celebrate 

too early. 

State Sen. Marty Golden 

(R-Bay Ridge-Southeast 

Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman 

Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay 

Ridge-Staten Island) said it’s 

not a sure bet that the MTA 

will vote to bring back the B37 

line when it holds its board 

meeting on July 24. 

“There are no assurances,” 

Golden said as he stood 

with Malliotakis and Bay 

Ridge Community Council 

President Renee Dorsa in 

a bus shelter on Third Avenue 

and 75th Street Thursday 

morning to call on the MTA 

to approve the proposal. 

“There is still one week 

left in this fight,” Malliotakis 

said at the press conference. 

Malliotakis, who noted that 

the MTA will be considering 

the possible restoration of 

several bus lines around the 

city, not just the B37, said that 

she, Golden and other elected 

officials in Brooklyn are eager 

“to make sure the B37 remains 

part of the proposal.” 

The MTA eliminated the 

B37 and other bus lines in 2010 

when the agency was faced 

with a budget crisis. The B37 

ran from Bay Ridge to Downtown 

Brooklyn along Third 

Avenue. The MTA rerouted 

the B70 to Third Avenue for a 

portion of its route. But transit 

advocates points out the 

B70 turns from Third Avenue 

onto 69th Street and doesn’t 

go any further north, leaving 

residents of Sunset Park and 

other neighborhoods north 

of Bay Ridge without a Third 

Avenue bus. 

Golden, Malliotakis, and 

Dorsa made a pitch for the 

B37. “This is a bus line that 

goes from Fort Hamilton all 

the way to Borough Hall. Our 

seniors cannot access the R 

train,” Malliotakis said. The R 

train stations do not have elevators, 

and many seniors find 

navigating the stairs difficult. 

As a result of the lack of 

transportation options, seniors 

“have to spend extra 

money they don’t have to pay 

for car services,” she said. Malliotakis 

added that her mother 

is one of those seniors. “She 

has a doctor whose office is 

near Borough Hall. It’s hard 

for her to get down there. She 

is always asking me about getting 

the B37 back,” Malliotakis 

told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. 

“The B37 is vital for seniors, 

people with disabilities 

and for our youth,” Dorsa said. 

Golden said a bus is needed 

to run the full length of 

Third Avenue so that people 

can get to Lutheran Medical 

Center, go shopping in 

Downtown Brooklyn and get 

to jobs in the court system 

and in Bush Terminal. 

In other matters, Golden 

expressed concern about 

the impact the closure of the 

Montague Street tunnel will 

have on subway service. The 

tunnel, which accommodates 

the R train, will be closed for 

14 months starting in early August 

so that the MTA can repair 

damage caused by Superstorm 

Sandy. Golden 

questioned whether the MTA 

can meet its 14-month timetable. 

“They haven’t opened up 

those walls. They haven’t seen 

what’s behind there,” he said. 

Golden added that he has 

been holding ongoing talks 

with MTA President Thomas 

Prendergast about adding 

transportation services to 

make up for the lack of a direct 

link for R train riders. Prendergast 

has agreed to increase service 

on local express buses by 

25 percent, Golden said. 

It’s important to keep up 

the pressure on the MTA, Malliotakis 

said. “The squeaky 

wheel gets the oil,” she said. 

Golden, Malliotakis and 

other advocates of the B37 

have at least one sympathetic 

ear on the MTA board. Allen 

Cappelli, the Staten Island 

member of the board, said recently 

that the B37 is “on the 

verge” of being restored. “I am 

hopeful that the MTA board 

will approve this plan unanimously 

at the next full board 

meeting,” he stated.

Runs for Mayor as Independent

the race to replace 

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, 

saying the current group of 

candidates would take the 

city backward. 

Jack Hidary announced 

he would be running as an 

independent. 

Born and raised in Brooklyn, 

the 45-year-old Hidary 

made his fortune in technology, 

and is the co-founder of 

dice.com, a job website. 

Hidary said he decided to 

get into the race because the 

current candidates didn’t offer 

forward-thinking policies. 

“It is clear that New York- 

Jack Hidary, tech businessman 

and mayoral candidate.

ers understand that the current 

crop of candidates want 

to take us back to tired policies 

and machine politics,” 

he said. “They want a new, independent 

choice.” 

He touted his experience 

creating businesses and jobs 

as among his strengths. His 

campaign said he’s raised 

more than $450,000 in donations. 

Hidary told the Associated 

Press he plans to take part in 

the public financing system 

as well as use his own money. 

The field is already a 

crowded one, with multiple 

candidates on both the 

Democratic and Republican 

sides seeking their parties’ 

nomination. The primaries 

are in September 

and the general election in 

November. 

Bloomberg is finishing 

his third term in office.

Garnett, Pierce, Terry Call ‘Sacrifice’ Key to Championship Success

They’ve each won a championship, 

competed in NBA Finals, received 

numerous individual awards 

and collected millions upon millions 

of dollars in the process. 

But when it comes to chasing 

and capturing the ultimate goal 

of an NBA championship – something 

the Brooklyn Nets have yet to 

achieve – Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce 

and Jason Terry all settled on one 

word to describe the difference between 

teams that win the title and 

those that never quite can. 

“Sacrifice,” Garnett intimated 

when asked by the Eagle what 

it would take for the Nets’ newly 

re-shaped roster to hoist the Larry 

O’Brien Trophy come next summer. 

“It’s what you end up giving up,” 

added the 37-year-old, 18-year NBA 

veteran. “You have to be willing to 

do what you don’t normally do. Instead 

of coming in and taking 25 

shots, you take 12 or less shots. And 

then you have to put forth the effort 

to play defense. These are the 

things, to me, that make the difference 

for championship teams.” 

The newly arrived trio from Boston 

received a heroes’ welcome to 

our fair borough within the friendly 

confines of the state-of-the-art Barclays 

Center on the corners of Atlantic 

and Flatbush avenues on Thursday 

afternoon. 

And to a man, the former Celtics 

were adamant about their desire 

not only to fit into their new digs, 

but to thrive within them. 

“The reason we won in Boston 

was just how we dealt with each 

other, and communicated with 

each other,” added Garnett, who 

teamed with Pierce to win an NBA 

championship with the Celtics in 

2008 and came within a single victory 

of grabbing another crown in 

2010. 

“So many different situations 

come up, but at the end of the day, 

you have to communicate. You have 

to be able to understand each other,” 

he said. 

Garnett, who had to waive his 

no-trade clause in order to be part 

of Thursday’s summer celebration, 

is known for his no-nonsense, oftentimes 

fury-inspiring approach to 

the game. 

It’s an attitude he hopes he can 

pass on to his new Nets teammates. 

“It’s unfortunate that we had to 

move from Boston, but one of the 

major reasons I decided to come 

here is because of the talent they 

have here already,” he said. 

Pierce, a certified “killer” in the 

clutch and former Finals MVP, reiterated 

his long-time teammates’ 

feelings on building a championship 

culture here in Brooklyn, even 

if, after 15 years in Boston, he still is 

getting used to the idea of suiting 

up for another NBA franchise. 

“It’s really starting to sink in as 

we speak,” the 35-year-old, 15-year 

vet admitted. “I saw my jersey up in 

the locker room. But for me to actually 

be here now, looking for a 

place to live, be in this arena, trying 

to learn my way around the city, it’s 

really starting to sink in that I’m no 

longer a Boston Celtic. I’m a Brooklyn 

Net. We’re trying to create some 

type of legacy here in Brooklyn.” 

“We’re championship driven,” 

Pierce added. “We’ve made a lot of 

money in our careers, won a lot 

of awards. At this point right now, 

we’re all about winning a championship. 

We want to be one of those

Terry, who was new Nets 

coach Jason Kidd’s running mate 

in Dallas when the Mavericks beat 

the Miami Heat for the 2011 title, 

was equally fervent in his desire 

to help Brooklyn do whatever it 

takes to have a victory parade in 

Downtown Brooklyn. 

“We’re here to compete for a 

championship,” said one of the 

NBA’s top sharp-shooting sixth 

men. “Playing with Jason, he was 

already coaching his entire life as 

a point guard. I’ve been in Atlanta, 

Dallas, Boston and am now to be 

able to call Brooklyn my home, I’m 

just very honored. And ready!” 

“Those [years in Dallas with 

coach Kidd] were some of the 

best years in my career,” added the 

35-year-old with 14 NBA seasons under 

his belt. “We wound up winning 

a championship. Playing alongside 

Jason, the best point guard ever to 

play in the history of the game, he 

was always coaching. If there was 

a practice to be run, he was always 

out there drawing up plays. I think 

this transition for him is going to 

be smooth. I love playing for a guy 

who understands me and understands 

my game.” 

Already armed with a strong 

foundation in All-Star center Brook 

Lopez, two-time Olympic champion 

point guard Deron Williams 

and six-time All-Star shooting guard 

Joe Johnson, the newest Nets know 

there will be an adjustment period 

in Brooklyn, at least initially. 

But with the proper “communication” 

and “sacrifice,” all three believe 

Brooklyn can challenge Miami, 

Chicago, Indiana, and yes, even 

the East River-rival New York Knicks 

for the right to play for the O’Brien 

Trophy next June. 

“You can’t just look at the 

names, you have to look at what everybody 

brings,” Pierce insisted. “I 

think we all complement each other. 

Kevin brings a ferocious intensity 

and know-how. You put him 

beside Brook Lopez, who is still 

learning and is already one of the 

best centers in the NBA, having Kevin 

around can only help him. 

“We already said sacrifice,” he 

added. “We want them to continue 

to be All-Stars and potentially 

MVP candiates as we chase the ultimate 

goal. We have no choice but to 

make this work, so we have to figure 

it out.” 

Kidd, a novice at the coaching 

game, will be responsible for making 

sure one of the NBA’s most decorated, 

yet long-in-the-tooth, starting 

fives gels, both on and off the court. 

He and general manager Billy 

King will be on the hook if this 

$180 million roster doesn’t click 

come playoff time, especially after 

last season’s 49-win club suffered a 

humbling first-round playoff exit 

at the hands of a seemingly tougher, 

grittier but short-handed Chicago 

Bulls unit. 

“I think we’re talking about a 

championship,” said Kidd. “Whether 

we’re talking about Miami, Chicago, 

Indiana and New York too. 

The big picture is that championship 

trophy. ... Our job is to win ballgames. 

Billy has put together a roster 

that’s deep. These guys don’t 

have to play 35 to 38 minutes a 

night. My job is to watch the clock, 

and make sure these guys stay fresh 

and healthy. The bigger picture is 

for these guys to be healthy heading 

into the playoffs.” 

For King, who spent last summer 

re-signing Williams and Lopez 

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov made a special guest appearance Thursday. 

while bringing in the likes of Johnson 

and backup big man Andray 

Blatche, taking a chance on three 

players with a combined age of 107 

years was a no-brainer. 

Especially with billionaire team 

owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who made 

a surprise guest appearance toward 

the end of the press conference Thursday, 

mandating an NBA crown within 

his first five years of ownership. 

“If you can add players, you 

want to add players with a championship 

pedigree,” noted King. 

So rather than pouring over the 

stat sheet or worrying about the 

credit they receive for the team’s 

success, this Beantown-to-Brooklyn 

trio is well aware that it will ultimately 

be judged by one thing. 

Whether or not it can legitimately 

chase down that elusive 

dream that has averted this franchise 

since its inception. 

“We have to understand the bigger 

picture [is a championship],” Pierce 

said. “We have high basketball IQs. 

The great players somehow always figure 

it out, and I think we will.”

Hoop du Jour: D.J. White, the 

fourth player acquired in the blockbuster 

deal with Boston on Draft 

Night, has already been put on 

waivers by the Nets, according to 

GM King. Over his five-year NBA 

career with Oklahoma City, Charlotte 

and Boston, White has averaged 

6.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in 

136 games. Originally selected by the 

Detroit Pistons with the 29th pick 

in the 2008 NBA Draft, White averaged 

2.4 points and 1.1 rebounds in 12 

games with the Celtics last season. ... 

The Nets’ other new signee, Russian 

F Andrei Kirilenko, was not present 

at Thursday’s introductory press conference

‘Stand Your Ground’ Laws 

Should be Challenged 

It didn’t take long. Three days after a jury found George Zimmerman not 

guilty in the murder of Trayvon Martin, the Justice Department said it will take 

a “hard look” at a new type of self-defense law known as “stand your ground.” 

Florida and nearly two dozen other states have passed such laws since 

2005 in a campaign led by the National Rifle Association. The laws get rid 

of an old legal doctrine that anyone confronted by a dangerous person has 

a “duty to retreat” rather than shoot. And the laws provide greater legal leniency 

toward killers who claim they acted out of fear of harm or death. 

That’s one reason Florida officials hesitated in arresting Mr. Zimmerman. 

He wasn’t charged until 44 days after the shooting. And even though 

his legal defense relied on a traditional self-defense argument rather than 

Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, the judge’s instructions to the jury specifically 

mentioned the law’s provision. 

While it is doubtful a Justice Department probe can make a legal challenge 

against the state laws, the federal scrutiny is needed. Homicide rates 

have risen 7 to 9 percent in states with stand-your-ground laws compared 

with other states, according to a 2012 Texas A&M study. And findings by 

Georgia State University “raise serious doubts against the argument that 

Stand Your Ground laws make [the] public safer.” 

The laws “senselessly expand the concept of self-defense,” Attorney 

General Eric Holder said Tuesday. They “try to fix something that was never 

broken” and have “victimized too many who are innocent.” 

In addition to the Justice probe, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights began 

an investigation last May to see if stand-your-ground laws encourage racial 

killings. A study published by the Urban Institute found more homicides were 

likely to be deemed justified in states with stand-your-ground laws than in other 

states, while shootings of blacks by whites “were likely to go unpunished.” 

But the main reason to challenge these laws is that they reverse the 

course of history. The rise of civilization has relied in large part on humans 

handing over the control and use of violence for protection and defense to 

the government. Societies built on moral codes that tell individuals “thou 

shall not kill” have proved to be more long-lasting. At a deeper level, they reflect 

an expanding respect for life, not just for family or nation, but for all. 

Stand-your-ground laws give too much authority back to individuals to 

decide the places or circumstances in which they can use violence. Many 

people have only a vague understanding of the laws’ legal distinctions or 

are able to assess the probability of harm being done to them. Other people 

may purposely kill off a harmless opponent, claiming a threat was imminent 

and with little risk of being charged. 

“When you make it easier for people to use deadly force, you get more 

of it,” said Mark Hoekstra, an associate professor of economics at Texas 

A&M University and the lead author of the 2012 study, which found these 

laws cause an additional 500 to 700 homicides each year. 

The popularity of the laws reflects growing distrust or lack of faith in government. 

“Lynchings, riots, civil disobedience and vigilantism are all expressions 

of individual or collective action that reject both legal norms and the 

authority of state actors,” writes Columbia University law professor Jeffrey 

Fagan. If that is the case, then America’s political system needs urgent repair. 

Laws that make it easier to shoot first and ask questions later are not a hallmark 

of human progress. At a practical level, they seem to increase homicides, 

not stem them. For that reason alone, states with the laws have a duty to retreat.

Old Meters

The city’s Department of 

Transportation (DOT) is coming 

to southern Brooklyn neighborhoods 

to take out old, outdated 

parking meters, according to 

a City Council candidate, who 

said the removal of the old, single-space 

meters will free up 

much needed parking spaces in 

congested areas. 

You’ll still have to pay to 

park on commercial strips in Bay 

Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, 

but you’ll use a muni-meter 

instead of the old, single-space 

parking meters that 

people had to drop quarters into, 

said John Quaglione, a Republican-Conservative 

who is running 

for the council seat covering the 

three communities. 

The removal of the old meters 

is good news, Quaglione said, 

because there is room for more 

cars to park on a block with a 

muni-meter than there were under 

the old meters. Under the old 

system, it was one meter per car. 

“There is no denying that we 

need more parking in our neighborhood, 

to support our businesses 

and our quality of life, and 

I believe the removal of these meter 

posts will help ease some of 

the burden,” Quaglione said. 

Even though DOT installed 

muni-meters on Third, Fifth, 13th 

and 18th Avenues and 86th Street 

and Fort Hamilton Parkway more 

than a year ago, the agency left 

the old meters in place on many 

blocks. As a result, many drivers 

still use the old meters as guideposts 

to judge how much space 

they had to park, Quaglione said. 

Fewer cars fit on the block, he said. 

Quaglione is running in the 

November election against incumbent 

Democrat Vincent Gentile. 

Gentile, a popular, well-liked 

councilman who has served 

since 2003, is seeking his third 

full term in office.

Did you know that Walter Camp, the “Father of Football” who 

invented the forward pass, was the first president of Brooklyn’s elite 

Crescent Athletic Club, which was in Bay Ridge where Fort 

Hamilton High School is now 

 

I don’t know how many Roosevelts are buried in Green-Wood 

Cemetery, but three of Theodore Roosevelt’s immediate family were, 

i.e. his parents and his first wife. 

 

According to one account, the last full-blooded Canarsee Indian 

in Brooklyn was a man named Joel Skidmore, who died in his 

nineties in 1902. 

 

It has been just one half century since Junior’s introduced its 

cheesecake. 

 

Lafayette was not the only famous Frenchman to visit Brooklyn in 

the 19th century. Talleyrand, who later became one of his nation’s 

leading diplomats and statesmen, supposedly lived here briefly in 

exile in a farmhouse on Hicks St. near what is now Old Fulton St. 

 

Walt Whitman once went all-out describing the local saloons. 

“They are the source of the mighty outpourings of ale and lager beer,” 

he said, “refreshing the thirst of drinkers in cold and hot weather.” 

 

The Battle of Brooklyn was not only the first battle of the 

American Revolution, but unlike the skirmishes at Concord and 

Lexington it was fought in hand-to-hand combat instead of behind 

barricades. 

 

In the 1910 obituary of Charles Feltman in the New York Times, he 

is described as “the man who turned the sandy wastes of Coney Island 

into a pleasure ground.” Not mentioned once is the fact that according 

to most historians, it was Feltman who invented the hot dog. 

 

Among the many big-league baseball players whose careers 

started with playing ball in Prospect Park were Sandy Koufax, Joe 

Torre, Lee Mazilli, Chuck Connors, Joe Pepitone and Willie Randolph. 

 

The first Dutch Reformed Church in Brooklyn had two unusual 

features: First, it had a hexagonal shape. Second, it stood smack in the 

middle of Fulton St. (near Duffield), with traffic having to walk or ride 

around it. 

 

Did you know that at the turn of the last century, one of the most 

poular sports in Brooklyn was lawn bowling It was even played in 

the Parade Grounds after they were no longer used for parades. 

 

Sign of the times! For years you would have had to be a resident of 

Brooklyn for fifty years to qualify for membership in the Society of Old 

Brookynites, but now you can become a member after a residency of 

only twenty-five years.

“You have to make your happiness 

a priority. Do something 

nice for yourself now. Don’t wait. 

Celebrate who you are today. 

Buy a nice dress in a size 14 if that 

is your size. Don’t wait until you 

lose weight to buy a nice dress. 

So many women think, ‘I don’t 

want to go shopping for clothes 

until I lose weight.’ That’s just 

wrong,” Alwill Leyba, 32, said. 

Alwill Leyba, whose popular 

blog “The Champagne Diet,” offers 

sisterly advice to women on 

how to live the good life without 

going broke, recently self-published 

her second book, “The 

Champagne Diet: Eat, Drink, and 

Celebrate Your Way to a Healthy 

Mind and Body.” Her first book, 

“Sparkle: The Girl’s Guide to Living 

a Deliciously, Wildly Effervescent, 

Kick-Ass Life,” published 

last year, was a best seller on amazon.com 

in both the Happiness 

and Self-Esteem categories. The 

new book is also available on 

amazon.com. 

She celebrated the launch of 

her book with a reading at the 

Book Mark Shoppe in Bay Ridge, 

the neighborhood where she 

was born and raised. 

“The new book is not a sequel 

to my first. It’s kind of an 

extension,” said Alwill Leyba, 

who by day works as a digital advertising 

director for MTV. She 

is also a life coach who enjoys 

helping women reach their full 

potential. 

“It’s about overall wellness in 

relationships, careers, in everything 

you do,” she said. 

The key is to “concentrate on 

what’s good about yourself.” She 

said. “Until you get to that place 

where you are comfortable with 

who you are, your issues will remain,” 

she said. 

The book contains chapters 

with titles like “Self-Compassion 

Can Save Your Waistline,” “Get 

Your Sexy On,” and “Love The 

Skin You’re In.” 

While “The Champagne 

Diet” isn’t actually a diet book, 

Alwill Leyba does offer some advice 

on eating well. “I tell women 

to concentrate on eating for 

your health as opposed to eating 

because of the number on the 

scale,” she said. 

Most of all, Alwill Leyba advises 

women to “live a passionate 

life” by finding something 

that excites them. “Practice selfcare 

rituals, things that you look 

forward to. If it’s exercise, do 

that. Travel if you like to travel. 

Go get a massage. Make yourself 

a priority,” she said. 

The blog, www.thechampagnediet.com, 

which she started 

writing a few years ago, encourages 

women to refrain from dieting 

and instead, urges them to indulge 

themselves as long as they 

don’t overdo it. The blog got its 

name from the fact that Alwill 

Leyba enjoys a glass of champagne 

each day. 

Alwill Leyba, who admitted 

that she has had weight issues 

in the past, said she believes her 

personal experience can help 

other women. “I really got to 

the emotional side of why I was 

overweight. My book is about 

guiding women through that 

journey,” she said.

John Gearity was late for work on 

the morning of July 11, but he had a 

good excuse to give his boss. He had 

stopped to help save a man’s life in 

the subway on his way to the office. 

Gearity, 21, an intern at a midtown 

ad agency, and another man, 

Richard McDonald, a 32-year-old information 

technology specialist, both 

risked their lives to help someone in 

need. The two men jumped onto the 

tracks at the R train station on Fourth 

Avenue and 77th Street in Bay Ridge 

and pulled a man to safety after the 

man had fallen. Gearity and McDonald 

saved the man’s life with no time 

to spare. A Manhattan-bound R train 

was barreling into the station. 

“It wasn’t as stressful as it 

sounds,” Gearity, a student at the 

University of Delaware, said modestly. 

“I just focused on the guy,” Mc- 

Donald said, referring to the man 

who had fallen onto the tracks. 

State Sen. Marty Golden (R-C- 

Bay Ridge-southern Brooklyn) was 

so impressed when he heard about 

the heroics that he decided to 

award Gearity and McDonald state 

senate proclamations. He presented 

the proclamations to the two men 

during a press conference outside 

the entrance to the 77th Street station 

on July 16. 

Golden, who is a retired New 

York City police officer, said he admired 

the men’s courage. “I’m not a 

guy who can jump onto the tracks 

when the train is 200 feet away,” he 

admitted. “When you have a train 

coming at you, you have no idea how 

fast that train is coming,” he said. 

Golden called the men’s actions “an 

extreme task,” and said that in a situation 

like the one they faced, “you cannot 

afford to make a mistake.” 

Gearity and McDonald, who did 

not know each other, were both on 

their way to work at 7 a.m. on July 11 

when they saw a man lying on the 

tracks. Each one jumped in to try to 

save the man. They saw each other 

on the tracks and knew instinctively 

that if they worked in tandem, they 

could save the man. “I took a glance at 

the train and saw there was enough 

time,” Gearity said. “We got him up 

on the platform,” McDonald said. 

They carried him to the platform 

on the opposite side, carefully 

making sure they didn’t step on the 

electrified third rail. 

The unidentified man suffered 

minor injuries in the fall. News 

12 Brooklyn, citing Metropolitan 

Transportation Authority sources, 

reported that the man appeared to 

be intoxicated when the incident 

took place. 

“I’m just happy the guy is fine,” 

Gearity said. 

When the whole thing was over, 

Gearity noticed that his suit was 

covered with dirt from the track 

bed. “I called the office to tell them 

that this happened and that I had 

to go home to change. I was about 

an hour and a half late for work,” he 

told the Brooklyn Eagle. His boss understood, 

he said. 

McDonald continued his trip to 

work. He didn’t brag to his co-workers 

about his heroics. “I did post 

something on Facebook,” he told 

the Brooklyn Eagle. 

The bravery displayed by Mc- 

Donald and Gearity might have 

gone unnoticed if not for a mutual 

friend of Gearity’s and Golden’s 

who informed the state senator of 

what had happened. “I am extremely 

proud of these two gentlemen,” 

Golden said. 

Both McDonald and Gearity are 

lifelong Bay Ridge residents. “I’ve 

been using this train station all my 

life,” McDonald said, as rush hour 

passengers streamed out of the 77th 

Street station and walked past him 

and Gearity.

Once a week, he lops

which was $695,000 when he 

started on May 28. He vows 

to keep cutting methodically, 

$10,000 every Saturday, until 

he gets an offer that matches 

his asking price. 

“I thought it would be 

cool,” Ross, the director of 

development marketing at 

Halstead, told the Brooklyn 

Eagle. 

He bought the five-story, 

10-unit walk-up rental building 

more than a decade ago 

and converted it to condominiums 

three years ago. 

“I thought what the heck 

– I’ll test the market at a 

price that’s higher than what 

I thought it would sell for,” 

he said. “You know I like to 

have fun.”

and no sales in his 

building in 2½ years.

buildings, according to

He decided to go with a

This summer, the Wyckoff 

House Museum – one of 

the oldest buildings in New 

York City – will host its first 

contemporary art exhibit, organized 

by independent curator 

Yena Lee. The exhibit, 

titled “In the House: Yukako 

Kondo and the Remembrance 

of Things Past,” will showcase 

breathtaking paintings by 

Seoul- and Osaka-based artist 

Yukako Kondo. 

The rhetoric of Kondo’s 

art is based on a combination 

of the vanitas aesthetic 

of seventeenth-century 

Dutch still–life painting and 

the symbolism of Korean 

folk art. The objects captured 

from Kondo’s everyday experience 

refer to the brevity 

and uncertainty of life and 

the transient nature of all 

earthly goods, as well as each 

individual’s obsession with 

earthly pleasures such as 

prosperity and longevity. The 

two contrasting attitudes toward 

life and death prompt 

the viewers to reflect on the 

meaning of one’s mortal coil: 

what do we fear and what do 

we want to achieve 

This exhibition awakens 

the memories of private 

lives lying dormant in the objects 

and space of the Wyckoff 

house. Like the petite madeleine 

of Marcel Proust, the riveting 

images breathe new life

Dutch-American Wyckoff family. 

Intimate stories of a mother 

and child fill the rooms, 

summoning up remembrance 

of things past as told through 

everyday objects. Visual cues 

of domestic life are complemented 

by modern Japanese 

haiku poems.

Men and Women Created Equal 

The Seneca Falls (NY) Convention was held July 19-20,

SENECA FALLS, NY 

— Women had few rights in 

pre-Civil War America. 

They were denied equal access 

to education and employment, 

and they were not 

allowed to vote. In effect, 

they were second-class citizens. 

There was no organized 

women’s-rights movement 

until the Seneca Falls 

Convention that was held 

July 19-20, 1848 in Seneca 

Falls, New York. 

The organizers of the convention 

were Lucretia Mott 

and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, 

both Quaker abolitionists. 

They decided to call a meeting 

to discuss “the social, 

civil, and religious rights of 

women.” A newspaper editorial 

condemned the meeting 

as “shocking and unnatural,” 

but 300 women and 40 men, 

including abolitionist Frederick 

Douglass, met at the Wesleyan 

church. 

Mrs. Stanton had been 

behind the New York Married 

Women’s Property Act, 

and Mrs. Mott, recognized 

the need for the forum. It 

was publicized through an 

advertisement in the Seneca 

County Courier. 

The meeting opened with 

this startling manifesto: “We 

hold these truths to be selfevident: 

that all men and 

women are created equal …” 

Then Stanton and Mott presented 

a Declaration of Sentiments, 

a statement of demands 

and grievances patterned 

after the Declaration 

of Independence. After two 

days of debates, the convention 

adopted long-term 

goals. The most controversial, 

passed by only a narrow 

margin, was a demand for 

the right to vote. This resolution 

became the corner stone 

of the women’s-suffrage 

movement, but more than 70 

years passed before women 

won voting rights. And the 

fight for full equality for 

women continues today. 

Mrs. Stanton and her followers 

admitted that they expected 

“misconception, misrepresentation 

and ridicule,” 

but would press on. Among 

those objecting were Mrs. 

Stanton’s husband, who so 

strongly opposed the concept 

of women voting that he 

abruptly left town. 

It was at the Seneca Falls 

Convention that “bloomers,” 

a radical departure in 

women’s dress, were introduced 

to the delegates. The 

daring costume took its name 

from Mrs. Amelia Jenks 

Bloomer, a reformer who 

sought to “emancipate” 

women from conventional 

and feminine modes of dress.

Pierce was only 19 when she 

attended the convention. She 

was the only woman attendee 

who voted in a national election. 

She voted in the first 

presidential election open to 

women, in 1920, 

Coincidence: It was on July 

19, 1984 that Geraldine Ferraro 

accepted the Democratic nomination 

for vice president of the 

U.S. She and Walter Mondale 

were defeated but her nomination 

was a historic milestone, 

particularly concerning women’s 

rights.

German Sub Sinks 

The San Diego 

LONG ISLAND 

— During World 

War I Germany sent 

six submarines on 

missions to the 

American coast the 

main purpose of 

which was to plant 

mines. All along the 

U.S. coast from 

Chesapeake Bay to 

the far reaches of 

Long Island minefields 

were planted. 

Eight miles south of 

Fire Island on July 19, 1918 the U.S. armored cruiser San Diego was rocked 

by an explosion, and a column of water erupted along the port side. The explosion 

blew a hole in the hull at the port engine room, killing two seamen 

instantly. Another crewman oiling the port propeller shaft was never seen 

again. The remaining engine was flooded and left the San Diego without 

power, preventing an SOS. 

When Captain Harley Christy gave the order, the crew struggled to 

launch the lifeboats manually. As the ship heeled, the smokestacks broke 

loose, one of them fatally crushing a sailor in the water. Another crew member 

died when a life raft fell on his head. A sixth sailor drowned after being 

trapped inside the crow’s nest. Captain Christy dispatched a small boat to 

shore to contact the Navy. Rescue vessels were soon on their way to help survivors 

and search for the sub. The ships dropped depth charges on a target 

that turned out to be the San Diego. 

As the San Diego sank stern first into the flat sea, more than 1,200 

crew members were afloat on boats, on rafts or in the water. They sang 

“The Star Spangled Banner” and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” as the ship 

sank from sight. The San Diego was the only major U.S. warship lost in 

World War I. 

Before the war ended the six German U-boats managed to sink a total 

of 99 vessels off the U.S. East Coast, with an aggregate tonnage of 

166,907 gross tons. Besides the material loss, 421 deaths are attributed to 

this U-Boat offensive. 

The San Diego still lies at the bottom off the coast of Long Island, a 

premier dive site, attracting thousands of divers a year and taking the 

lives of six who became disoriented inside the salty hull. Artifacts from 

the ship can be seen at the intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in Manhattan 

The Navy has been trying to discourage divers from taking artifacts 

from the ship in recent years, saying the San Diego is still government 

property and a war grave. In 1998 the wreck was put on the National 

Register of Historic Places in a further effort to preserve what remains. 

Famous American Gunsmith’s Birthday 

HARTFORD, CT — Samuel Colt was born on 

July 19, 1814 in Hartford, Connecticut. At the age of 

sixteen he went to sea, and during his first voyage he

the first practical handgun that could 

fire repeatedly without reloading. This is part 

of an advertisement for the revolver.

made a wooden model of a revolver. When he returned 

to the United States he secured patents for his 

single-barreled pistol in 1835 and 1836. It was the 

first practical handgun that could fire more than one 

or two shots without reloading. Colt called it a revolver 

because the bullets were held in a revolving 

cylinder. With each cock of the hammer or pull of 

the trigger, the cylinder revolved, moving another 

bullet into firing position. The revolver was also 

known as the “six-shooter,” because its cylinder 

held six bullets. A company was formed to manufacture 

the pistol, but it became insolvent in 1842. 

Colt invented an electrically controlled submarine 

mine and ran a telegraph business. With the outbreak 

of the Mexican War in 1846, the Federal government 

placed an order for 1,000 of Colt’s revolvers. 

In 1847 Colt set up his own company, Colt’s 

Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company, in Hartford. 

During the Civil War, the Union army chose Colt’s 

.44-caliber revolver as its official pistol, while the 

Confederacy copied another Colt model, a .36-caliber 

revolver. By 1852 Colt had become successful 

in manufacturing and marketing his weapons. In 

1852 Colt built a large armory in Hartford, where, in 

addition to firearms, machinery for manufacturing

to Samuel Colt. 

Colt and another inventor, Eli Whitney were responsible 

for introducing the use of interchangeable 

parts into American manufacturing practice. This 

contribution to industrial development made possible 

the remarkable achievement of modern production-line 

manufacturing. 

Samuel Colt died a rich man in 1862. His company 

continued to produce new models, including the 

Buntline Special, a revolver with a barrel over a foot 

long. It was used by legendary gunslingers Wyatt 

Earp and “Wild” Bill Hickok. 

The 1950 movie Colt .45 (aka Thundercloud) 

might interest some readers. Randolph Scott is cast 

as a representative of the Colt factory who travels 

west to demonstrate the attributes of the weapon. 

Much is to be learned about the revolver in Scott’s 

demonstrations. But true to Hollywood the other 

Scott in the film, Zachary, steals a couple of the 

demo guns and goes on a crime spree which might 

have created a campaign against owning guns similar 

to the one we have these days. One film critic 

says the gun itself is the star of the movie.

MOON — On July 20, 

1969, the U.S. reached a 

goal set by President John F. 

Kennedy when astronauts 

Neil Armstrong and Edwin 

Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. 

landed their lunar excursion 

module Eagle on the moon 

at 4:17 p.m. (EDT), near the 

Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong’s 

statement as he first 

stepped on the moon is 

often misquoted (because 

the “a” he put before “man” 

was illogically edited out of 

the tape): “That’s one small 

step for a man, one giant 

leap for mankind.” Almost 

as dramatic were Aldrin’s 

words: “Houston, Tranquility 

Base here. The Eagle has 

landed.” The nearly 700 

million earthlings who had 

tuned in breathed a sigh of 

relief. The astronauts returned 

to Earth on July 24, 

bringing photographs and 

rock samples. 

Millions watched the 

dramatic moment on television. 

Four days earlier on 

July 16, 1969, a giant Saturn 

V rocket, as tall as a 26- 

story building, had been 

launched from Cape 

Kennedy in Florida. Atop 

the rocket was the Apollo 

11 spacecraft carrying Armstrong, 

Aldrin and Michael 

Collins. The three-stage 

rocket provided the thrust 

to propel the spacecraft to 

the moon. Apollo 11 then 

took over, using its own engine 

to go into orbit around 

the moon. 

On July 20 the Apollo 

11’s spider-legged lunar 

module, the Eagle, separated 

from the rest of the 

spacecraft and carried Armstrong 

and Aldrin to a flat 

area on the moon’s surface. 

The landing was smooth. 

For the first time, humans 

had landed on the moon. A 

dream as old as humanity 

had been achieved. Between 

1969 and 1972, the 

U.S. launched six successful 

manned missions to the 

moon. A total of 12 astronauts 

walked on the lunar 

surface. 

QUEENS — July 20, 

1859, was the first time that 

admission was charged for 

spectators to see a ball game. 

At the Fashion Race Course, 

in what is now Corona, 

Queens, 1,500 fans paid fifty 

cents to see the first All-Star 

game played by baseball’s 

first league, the National Association 

of Base Ball Players.

BROADWAY — Marilyn 

Miller caught Broadway show 

producer Lee Shubert’s fancy 

when he saw her dancing in 

the show at the Lotus Club. 

He promptly signed the petite, 

blonde dancer with a face 

of Dresden doll beauty for his 

Passing Show of 1914. Her ascent 

to stardom was rapid. 

Florenz Ziegfeld signed her 

on to appear in his Follies of 

1918 and again for the 1919 

edition. 

On December 21, 1920 

Ziegfeld premiered what is 

known as the most magical of 

all American musicals — 

Sally. It had the entrancing 

Marilyn Miller as Sally. With 

this show she became Broadway’s 

undisputed queen of 

musical comedy. 

On July 20, 1922, when 

actress Billie Burke was 

Ziegfeld’s current wife. Marilyn 

Miller said: “I don’t want 

to quarrel with Flo Ziegfeld’s 

wife, but if Billie Burke wants 

to fight, I’ll give her a real 

one. I’ve got lots of ammunition 

and Broadway will understand 

what I mean.” Miller 

said that Ziegfeld tried to 

championship of America, the 

New York All-Stars won the 

first game the best-of-three 

set, over Brooklyn 22-18. 

New York captured the championship 

over Brooklyn with a 

29-18 victory in the rubber 

match but Brooklyn did win 

the second game 29-8.

It is said that she and Jack 

were both heroin addicts at the 

time. 

Ziegfeld’s bribe of jewels 

offered to Miller was apparently 

one she could refuse because 

she and Jack Pickford 

were wed on July 30, 1922. 

They were divorced on November 

2, 1927. 

Stolen Artwork Found in Brooklyn 

The Brooklyn Eagle of July 20, 2001 had this intriguing 

story: a Rembrandt drawing, “Woman 

Standing With Raised Hands,” and other rare 

drawings and paintings such as Durer’s 1496 ink 

drawing “Women’s Bathhouse” (inset), found 

hidden in a Brooklyn apartment, were returned 

to Germany’s Bremen Museum. Since World 

War II, the artwork followed a twisted route — 

stolen by Soviet troops, given to a museum in 

Azerbidjan, and then 

stolen again by a globetrotting

1989 Brooklyn’s famous Gage 

& Tollner restaurant had the 

distinction of being the first 

and only restaurant to be designated 

a landmark (1975). 

The Four Seasons Restaurant 

at 99 East 52nd Street on Park 

Avenue was the second restaurant 

to be given that honor. 

The Four Seasons opened 

on July 20, 1959. 

An interior designed by 

Philip Johnson seats four hundred. 

Four Seasons is among 

the most fashionable and expensive 

restaurants in New 

York City. As implied by the 

name, its decor and cuisine 

change with the seasons right

EAST PRUSSIA — By 

July of 1944 German morale 

was unraveling due to many 

battlefield disasters and 

mounting atrocities. A group 

of officers and civilian officials 

attempted a coup. On 

July 20, at the East Prussian 

field headquarters, Colonel 

Graf Claus von Stauffenberg, 

a top officer of the 

Wehrmacht, was chosen by 

the coup to plant a briefcase 

bomb under the conference 

table where Adolf 

Hitler would be seated. By 

chance, Col. Heinz Brandt 

moved the case, and Hitler 

was only slightly wounded. 

Four other people, including 

Brandt, were killed by 

the blast. Hitler went on 

Radio Berlin to describe the 

attack to the German people, 

saying the bomb "exploded 

two meters away 

from me, but I am entirely 

unhurt apart from negligible 

grazes, bruises, or 

burns." 

The eight coup leaders 

were strangled while hanging 

from meat hooks. 5,200 

other people, including the 

families of alleged plotters, 

were executed as well. 

Erwin Rommel, the conspirator's 

candidate to succeed 

Hitler, was given the 

choice between a show trial 

and suicide. He chose the 

latter. Paranoid to begin 

with, Hitler now trusted almost 

no one - including his 

surviving generals.

‘Bridge’ Poet Born 

The poet Hart Crane was born 

on July 21, 1899 in Garrettsville, 

Ohio. He made his way 

to New York at a young age and 

pursued his literary ambitions. 

One of his most famous works is 

an epic poem titled “The 

Bridge,” which is about Brooklyn 

Bridge. Crane lived for a time 

on Columbia Heights in Brooklyn 

Heights and admired the perfect 

view of New York Harbor 

that the situation afforded him. 

He wrote to his mother, “Just 

imagine looking out your window 

Hart Crane 

directly on the East River with 

nothing intervening between your view of the Statue of Liberty, 

way down the harbour, and the marvelous beauty of 

Brooklyn Bridge close above you on your right! All of the 

great new skyscrapers of lower Manhattan are marshalled directly 

accross [sic] from you, and there is a constant stream of 

tugs, liners, sail boats, etc in procession 

before you on the river! It’s 

really a magnificent place to live. 

This section of Brooklyn is very 

old, but all the houses are in 

splendid condition and have not 

been invaded by foreigners . . .” 

Crane battled depression and 

on April 27, 1932, at the age of 

32, he was on a steamboat in the 

Gulf of Mexico when he exclaimed 

“Goodbye, everybody!” 

and hurled himself overboard in 

front of several witnesses. His 

body was never recovered. 

Jail Door Suicide 

NEW YORK CITY — In a 

bizarre finish to an already incredible 

tale of violence, the 

man who bombed the US Capitol 

in Washington and shot industrialist 

J. Pierpont Morgan 

committed suicide on July 21, 

1915, in New York by hurling 

himself headfirst from the top of 

a jail door. 

Eric Muenter, also known as 

Frank Holt, died instantly in 

the Nassau County jail, where 

he had been held for the bombing 

and shooting. His rampage 

began on July 17 when a bomb 

wrecked a room in the Senate 

wing of the Capitol. During the 

same weekend, he invaded 

Morgan’s Long Island home 

and wounded the Morgan heir 

in an attempt to kidnap Mrs. 

Morgan and their children. 

Muenter, a German professor, 

said he wanted to stop Morgan 

from exporting munitions.

OAK PARK, IL — Ernest 

Hemingway was born in Oak 

Park, Illinois, on July 21, 

1899. He was educated at 

Oak Park High School. He 

became a reporter for the 

Kansas City Star, but left that 

job within a few months to 

serve as a volunteer ambulance 

driver in Italy during 

World War I. He later transferred 

to the Italian infantry 

and was severely wounded. 

After the war he was a correspondent 

for the Toronto Star 

and then settled in Paris, 

France. While in Paris, Hemingway 

was encouraged in 

creative work by the American 

expatriate writers Ezra 

Pound and Gertrude Stein. 

After 1927 Hemingway spent 

long periods of time in Key 

West, Spain, and Africa. During 

the Spanish Civil War he 

returned to Spain as a newspaper 

correspondent. In 

World War II he was again a 

correspondent and later was a 

reporter for the United States 

First Army. 

Hemingway was an avid 

fisherman, hunter, and bullfight 

enthusiast and he drew 

heavily on his experiences 

in writing. His adventurous 

life brought him close to 

death several times 

One of the foremost authors 

between the two World 

Wars, Hemingway depicted 

the life of two types of people 

in his early works. One type 

consisted of men and women 

deprived, by World War I, of 

faith in the moral values in 

which they had believed. The 

other type were men of simple 

character and primitive emotions, 

such as prizefighters 

and bullfighters. His earliest 

works include the collections 

of short stories Three Stories 

and Ten Poems (1923), his 

first work; In Our Time 

(1924), tales reflecting his 

youth; Men Without Women 

(1927), a volume that included 

“The Killers” remarkable 

for the description of impending 

doom, and Winner Take 

Nothing (‘33), stories characterizing 

unfortunates in Europe. 

The novel which established 

his reputation, The Sun 

Also Rises (1926), is 

the story of a group of morally 

irresponsible Americans 

and Briton living in France 

and Spain, members of the 

so-called “lost generation” of 

the post-World War I period. 

In 1929 he published his second 

important novel, A 

Farewell to Arms, the story of

Because of his suicidal 

tendencies his wife had 

locked his hunting guns 

away at their home in the 

Sawtooth Mountains near 

Sun Valley, Idaho. On July 2, 

1961, Hemingway found the 

keys, chose a shotgun from 

his collection and shot himself 

in the head with both 

barrels.

The interfaith group included 

the leaders of large and small congregations 

and organizations, prominent 

Brooklyn faith leaders, neighborhood 

pastors and clergy from the 

Christian tradition, imams—leaders 

of prayer at mosques—and rabbis.

NYC Transit Police Department and

Decries Zimmerman Acquittal 

Two days after Sen. Eric Adams received the clergy endorsements, he issued a statement about the George Zimmerman 

acquittal just a couple of hours after the jury rendered its verdict. 

“Justice was not served in Florida today—not for the family of Trayvon Martin nor for Americans who believe everyone 

in this country—regardless of skin color—has a right to safety, peace and respect in their community. We feel 

this ruling all the way up here in Brooklyn, where this poisonous culture of bias has infected our own system of justice, 

and the basic rights of black and Latino young men are violated on a daily basis. Laws like Stand Your Ground and 

the abuse of Stop and Frisk take us backward, and will only lead to more tragedies like Trayvon Martin. We must learn 

from this outrage and make changes now. That is how Trayvon will ultimately get the justice he deserves.”

Brooklyn Congregations United holds a Candidates’ Forum this Sunday, 

July 21 with candidates for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, Brooklyn 

district attorney, Brooklyn borough president and Council District 40. 

The forum will be hosted at the Flatbush Reformed Church’s auditorium, 

890 Flatbush Ave. near Church Ave. 

Brooklyn Congregations United is a non-profit coalition of faith-based 

groups and individuals from Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions which 

works on issues of social change. 

Last week, clergy and community leaders met to finalize plans for 

the Candidates Forum, which is the second one for Brooklyn Congregations 

United. Four years ago, BCU had welcomed the candidates for mayor. 

More than 400 clergy and community members attended that 2009 forum, 

which was hosted at Our Lady of Refuge Church. 

During last week’s planning meeting, political science Professor Mike 

Racioppo offered political analysis of the election landscape. Fannie Conner 

from the League of Women Voters provided voter registration training 

to prepare congregations and other groups to conduct voter registration 

events leading up to the election. 

Community leaders discussed issues to be brought before the candidates 

at the July 21 forum. Topics include public safety, housing, education, 

healthcare, immigration, seniors and youth. The forum will run 

from 4 to 7 p.m.

On African-American Heritage 

Teaches Preservation Methods 

Plymouth Church will take part in a Smithsonian-sponsored program 

on preserving African-American heritage at the Brooklyn Museum this 

weekend. 

A group from Plymouth, including Director of History Ministry Services 

Lois Rosebrooks, will be at this special event, titled “Save Our African 

American Treasures: A National Collections Initiative of Discovery 

and Preservation.” The Plymouth delegation will answer questions and 

distribute materials about the historic congregation’s abolitionist heritage 

and its archives. 

Part of the program is dedicated to helping Brooklyn residents identify 

and preserve items of historical and cultural significance tucked away 

in attics, closets, and basements, according to the Brooklyn Museum’s 

website, brooklynmuseum.org. The event features presentations, handson 

activities and preservation tips. Participants may bring up to three personal 

items, such as family photographs and papers, for a 15-minute, professional 

consultation with experts on the proper care of these artifacts. 

Specialists will serve as reviewers, not appraisers, and will not determine 

items’ monetary value. Objects such as books, papers, ceramics, and textiles 

that are no larger than a shopping bag can be reviewed. (Furniture, 

carpets, firearms and paintings are excluded). 

Participants will also have the chance to gain hands-on experience in 

the proper preparation and packing of letters, garments and photographs 

for preservation, storage and presentation. The daylong program, on Saturday, 

July 20, runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

being held at the famed Aspen Institute

Avraham’s Sisterhood 

offers a “Spiritual Oasis in 

the Desert of Our Lives.” 

The Sisterhood offers this program 

for women and couples on 

the significance of the mikvah, a 

ritual bath that is used for purification. 

The Mei Menachem Mitzvah 

opened in 2000 and is open, by appointment, 

to women, according to 

the commandment to purify oneself 

following a menstrual period. 

The mikvah is open to men only 

in preparation for Yom Kippur, according 

to the synagogue’s website. 

However, the Spiritual Oasis event, 

on Tuesday, July 23, is open to both 

genders to give insight on the importance 

of the mikvah, particularly 

in a marriage.

p.m. buffet and 8 p.m. presentation.

Milestones in Faith 

Henry Ward Beecher, Part II 

Recently, Faith in Brooklyn saluted 

the Bicentennial of Henry 

Ward Beecher’s birthday, June 24, 

1813, picturing one of the two statues 

of that can be found in Brooklyn 

Heights and the downtown civic 

center. 

Beecher, who was called as the 

first pastor of Plymouth Church, 

founded in 1847, became one of 

America’s most famous preachers 

and orators. He dramatically 

built Plymouth’s membership, filling 

the Meeting House to overflow 

with his powerful preaching and 

dramatic opposition to slavery. According 

to the history web page on 

Plymouth Church’s site, plymouth. 

org, Beecher was “a master at creating 

public events to strengthen 

the fight against slavery. He staged 

mock ‘auctions’ at Plymouth, urging 

the congregation to purchase 

the freedom of actual slaves. During 

one service, he trampled the chains 

that had bound John Brown. He invited 

famous anti-slavery advocates 

to speak at the Church, including 

William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner 

Truth, Wendell Phillips, Charles 

Sumner and Frederick Douglass.” 

Beecher inspired Plymouth to create 

deep bonds with the Underground 

Railroad–the clandestine 

network of people who helped 

slaves escape to the North and Canada. 

Plymouth thus became known 

as “Grand Central Depot.” To this 

day, Plymouth Church maintains 

its commitment to abolishing modern-day 

forms of slavery, such as sex 

trafficking.

piece, “Let There Be Swing.” 

Dr. Eugene Marlow is a composer, 

arranger and leader of The 

Heritage Ensemble, which has performed 

many times in Brooklyn 

and in venues around New York 

City. The Heritage Ensemble performs 

regularly at the Nyorican Poets 

Café in the Lower East Side. 

Jackie Harris, Director of Special 

Projects & New Orleans Representative 

for the foundation, heard 

a performance of this work by the 

Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban 

Jazz Orchestra, under the 

direction of seven-time Grammy 

nominee Maestro Bobby Sanabria. 

Maestro Sanabria is the 2013 Jazz 

Journalists Association “Percussionist 

of the Year,” and the drummer 

in Eugene Marlow’s Heritage 

Ensemble. 

Upon hearing “Let There Be 

Swing,” Ms. Harris told Dr. Marlow, 

“I just loved it.”

Suspension for Lawyer Who 

Created Fake Online Profile

The suspension of a Staten Island attorney 

who went on a lesbian dating website posing as 

a woman he once knew has been issued by the 

Appellate Division, 2nd Department. 

James O’Hare went on an online dating site 

for lesbians and created a false profile impersonating 

a woman he had previously known. 

According to court documents, he used both his 

home and work computers for this activity, 

aware that the fake profile would likely cause 

embarrassment to the woman, who was a mother 

of three. 

O’Hare did not deny his creation of the false 

profile, but asserted that his actions did not violate 

the Rules of Professional Conduct and thus 

didn’t rise to the level warranting suspension. 

O’Hare was arrested in 2011 and pleaded guilty 

to aggravated harassment, a criminal misdemeanor, 

stemming from the fake web profile. 

He received a one-year discharge, and an order 

of protection was issued against him. O’Hare 

has since asked the Appellate Division that his 

discharge be lifted. 

Though he had already been suspended 

from practicing law for over a year, in its July 

17 unsigned opinion a panel of Appellate 

Division, 2nd Department judges ordered a 

one-year suspension for O’Hare, noting that his 

“conduct was highly inappropriate and 

adversely reflects on the legal profession.” 

In his defense, O’Hare asserted that while 

his actions were “inexcusable,” the woman was 

not one of his clients and suffered no bodily or 

financial harm from his 

actions. 

O’Hare also noted that 

he suffers from a disorder 

that prevents him from 

appropriately adjusting to 

environments or situations. 

The panel found the arguments 

unpersuasive. 

Given the fact that 

O’Hare has already served a 

year of discharge from the 

practice of law, the panel 

allowed O’Hare to take time 

served and apply for reinstatement 

immediately — so 

long as he can prove that he 

refrained from practicing or 

attempting to practice law, 

maintained his continuing 

legal education credits and 

otherwise conducted himself 

properly.

Business Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion

The Justice Department and Internal 

Revenue Service (IRS) announced today that 

Harry Neuhoff, a resident of Brooklyn, has 

pleaded guilty to tax evasion. 

According to documents filed with the 

court, Neuhoff was president and owner of Eva 

Tees Inc., formerly of Queens and currently 

located in Piscataway, N.J. From approximately 

2006 to 2008, Neuhoff manipulated Eva Tees 

accounts through an accounting software program 

to delete cash sales from the general 

ledger accounts maintained on the computer 

accounting system. 

As a result, Neuhoff filed false corporate tax 

returns on behalf of Eva Tees with the IRS that 

underreported the gross receipts of the firm.

A married Florida couple was arrested in 

Long Island Wednesday and appeared in 

Brooklyn Federal Court on Thursday on money 

laundering and prostitution charges. 

Vincent and Mellissa Lombardo, Florida 

residents, are the owners of aphroditecompan 

ions.com, a website that was allegedly used for 

prostitution purposes. According the federal 

complaint against the Lombardos, the website 

included links to web pages depicting photos of 

prostitutes partially clothed or naked and in sexually 

explicit poses. 

The site also displayed the schedule for each 

prostitute and the city in which she was available; 

many of the girls traveled across state lines to be 

more available for hire. In exchange for the 

advertising and related services, it is alleged that 

the prostitutes paid the Lombardos 30-40 percent 

of their fee, which was often hundreds of dollars. 

It is also alleged that the Lombardos were 

connected to a website, theeroticreview.com, 

where “johns” can rate their experience with various 

prostitutes. The federal investigation 

revealed that Aphroditecompanions.com often

offered discounts to customers that posted 

reviews on the rating website after a date with 

one of the Aphrodite companions. 

The complaint outlines a number of email 

exchanges purportedly between Mellissa 

Lombardo and various escorts. The emails 

detail some of the sexual services the escorts 

were required to perform, the screening process 

Neuhoff’s conduct also correspondingly resulted 

in his filing of false personal income tax 

returns with the IRS for those years. 

According to the documents filed with the 

court, Neuhoff underreported the gross receipts 

of Eva Tees through computer manipulations 

by at least $1.5 million. Sentencing is scheduled 

for Nov. 8 before U.S. District Court 

Judge Edward Korman. 

Neuhoff faces a maximum sentence of five 

years in prison, three years of supervised release, a 

$250,000 fine and a $100 special assessment. He 

has agreed to pay restitution to the IRS. 

The case was investigated by IRS-Criminal 

Investigation. Trial Attorneys Mark Kotila and 

Karen E. Kelly of the Justice Department’s Tax 

Division prosecuted this case. 

Couple to Appear in Brooklyn Federal Court 

On Charges of Facilitating Prostitution Ring 

for escorts, and the schedule and rates for some 

escorts. 

One email in particular was an ad sent out to 

many of the Aphrodite Companion escorts seeking 

“TWO LADIES FOR MULTI DAY TRIPS 

WITH CLIENTS. ONE TRIP REQUIRES A 

PASSPORT.” The trip requiring a passport was 

with a London businessman seeking a companion 

for a weeklong trip to 

South Africa at a rate of 

$3,000 a day.

Attend National Night Out 

Against Crime on August 6

I want to encourage residents of 

Brooklyn to attend this year's 30th Annual 

National Night Out Against Crime on 

Aug. 6 in their local community. Local 

police precincts generally host a National 

Night Out Against Crime which representatives 

from my office attend in order to 

provide information about my office's 

programs and services. This national 

event is designed to heighten crime and 

drug prevention awareness, generate support 

for local anti-crime programs, 

strengthen neighborhood camaraderie and 

police-community partnerships and let the 

criminal element know that their neighborhood 

is organized and fighting back. 

While traditionally “lights on” and 

front porch gathering remain the cornerstones 

of National Night Out, some communities 

plan block parties, cookouts, 

contests and youth programs. Since 1984 

the objective of this event has been to 

heighten awareness and strengthen participation 

in local anti-crime efforts. In that 

first year, 400 communities in 23 states 

participated. Recent participation is 

reported to have grown to 37 million people 

from all 50 states, U.S. territories, 

Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. 

Over the years, the National Night Out 

has proven to be a positive, inexpensive 

and enjoyable gathering that effectively 

promotes our common objective of creating 

safer communities in our nation. This 

is an event to celebrate safety and crime 

prevention successes and to expand and 

strengthen these successes for the next 

year. I hope to see you August 6.
