2 PurposeThe aim of the study has been to investigate the occurrence, sources,transport and fate of nonylphenols and phthalates in the aquatic environmentof Roskilde Fjord. It was further intended to find the temporal aswell as the spatial variation of these xenobiotics in the fjord and streamwater. Further, to investigate nonylphenols and phthalates in sediment inthe fjord including a sediment core in the southern part, expected to yieldclues regarding the historical variation of the concentration of xenobiotics,as well as some streams and lakes. Finally, an important aim was tomake a mass balance for the fjord system, including sources, transportand the mechanisms of elimination, and to make a mathematical modeldescribing the fate of the substances in the fjord system.11
