artery is not unanimously accepted.Though Gruber 1867 15 and Meckel1816 15 agreed with it. Adachi 1928 16and Mrazkova 1989 17 considered thatradial artery branches directly from theinterosseous artery. Poteat 1986 18modified Singer´s model and proposed asandwich of stage 2 and 3, making ulnarartery the second artery to appear in arm.The present anomaly is thus explainedby the persistence of embryologicalvessels which may be due tohemodynamic persistence of superficialsystem over deep system at the origin ofulnar artery . Genetic influences seen tobe prevalent cause of such variation, although other factors like foetal positionin utero, first limb movement or unusualmuscular development can not becompletely excluded.Vascular anomalies occurring in commonsurgical sites tend to increase thelikelihood of damage during surgery.Owing to unusual course of superficialulnar artery, it would be particularlyvulnerable to different surgicalprocedures. Thus it is important forsurgeons and radiologists to be aware ofthe possible arterial variations in order toprevent complications during surgical anddiagnostic procedures.Arora L & Dada RDepartment of Anatomy, AIIMS, NewDelhiReferences1.
