34 Exploration Extensive regional geophysical and geochemical surveys have lead to the discovery of the three gold occurrences over a 6 km strike length (Figs. 17–19). All occurrences are open along strike and at depth. At Kiimalaki, the subvertical gold-enriched zone lies in the centre of the hydrothermally altered domain, continues at least 250 m along strike and is open at depth. The best diamond-drill intercepts obtained include 11.70 m @ 4.48 g/t, 7.50 m @ 5.88 g/t, and 5.00 m @ 5.96 g/t Au. At Kellolaki, a profile of seven diamond drill holes across the hydrothermally altered domain intersected several-gold mineralised zones returning 8.00 m @ 1.95 g/t and 8.55 m @ 1.51 g/t Au. Six out of eight diamond drill holes at Kiimakuusikko returned significant gold grades, the best intercept being 3.45 m @ 3.94 g/t Au. In addition, grab samples from exploration trenches at Kiimakuusikko have returned up to 3.82 g/t Au, 954 g/t Ag, 0.36 % Cu, 8.09 % Pb, 0.42 % Zn and 1.97 % Sb (Dragon Mining 2011a). Such a metal association may suggest a syngenetic(?) base-metal mineralisation overprinted by an orogenic gold system. In any case, the peak silver and base-metal contents are mainly in late quartz-carbonate veins. The discovery of the Kiimakuusikko gold occurrence in 2008 underlines the further potential for gold mineralisation along the HSZ. Geochemical and geophysical surveys both north and south of the area of the known occurrences have identified a number of targets that warrant further testing. In 2011, the focus of exploration at Hanhimaa will be in drilling the identified targets in order to establish a resource inventory base from which the project can potentially advance from exploration to operational status.
